In my opinion, this is a great movie on several fronts. (original version) First, it's a good story suitable for family viewing. One does not have to celebrate Christmas (only the spirit of Christmas) or hold any particular religious view to enjoy this film. Second, depending on your particular family and circumstances, it can be used as a vehicle to gently show young children who may really believe in Santa Claus that although there is not a jolly man in a red suit who climbs down the chimney and brings presents, he is very much alive because it's the spirit of giving that he promoted which holds the meaning of Santa Claus. It is not that much different from the famous Yes Virginia, there really is a Santa Claus editorial written about 100 years ago. For those folks who hold specific religious views it's a short jump to show children the relationship between the religious aspect of Christmas and the Santa Claus / Kris Kringle story, and how they work together. If handled thoughtfully, there does not have to be a conflict between the two. Third, the picture at the time of it's release performed the very important act of helping to heal the nation. It was not released during the holidays but instead was released in May, which gave it enough time to gain momentum, thus making it important the following Christmas season. A tremendous number of people had lost friends and loved ones during the second world war and as all of us know, the first time we have a holiday or an anniversary when a loved one is no longer with us, especially when people are lost through the tragedy of war, it is a very difficult time indeed. Besides the obvious story line of Kris Kringle believing that he is Santa Claus, the picture showed the nation that the faith of a child (Susan Walker) was where our future would lie and also gave an additional reason for those who were grieving to believe that their loved ones died for more reasons than just the halting of tyranny. Susan's innocent faith, contrasted with her mother's cold hard facts of life, mixed with an ideological attorney, all pull together to prove one of those lovely intangibles in the form of Kris Kringle and in doing so, exemplify the spirit of the Christmas season and in particular, Santa Claus.

A great, classic holiday film. Edmund Gwenn has always been a favorite of mine, and played Kris Kringle incomparably. Maureen O'Hara, Natalie Wood, and John Payne were all great as well. A nice, inspiring story, even though by today's standards it may be a bit passe'.

I like the original version far and away the best. I nice story about a real Santa comes to New York and has to prove he IS the real Santa. the cast is perfect. from Maureen Ohara, Edmund Gwen. to a young Natalie Wood.Especially Edmund Gwen. he was wonderful as Santa.he deserved the oscar he won for his role as Santa. we watch this movie every year. this is one of those feel good movies. All about believing.

Not only a bad holiday show, but possibly the worst movie ever made.

A good movie to see if you have lost your Christmas spirit.

I like both versions, the old and the remake. I saw the remake before I saw the original, and saw the original for the first time, this year. It's such a sweet story!

"Miracle on 34th Street" is a true classic (and I'm talking about the wonderful original, not the terrible 90s remake). Natalie Wood, in addition to being just so adorable, was incredibly talented for such a young actress. The actor who played Kris Kringle (I unfortunately can't recall his name) was perfect for the role. I make it a point to catch this movie every year around the holidays.

For the longest time I thought this movie was called "Miracle on 42nd St." You may think that was just some perverted, adolescent wishful thinking but it's true I really thought that was the title. In any case I think this is really sweet movie. Nice story and message. I always get a little charge when they come in dumping sack after sack of letters on the judges desk.
