Don't you just love a horse with a smart mouth? That's what made him funny.

Side note: I always thought they used peanut butter to make his lips move.

A talking horse (or any talking pet) would creep me out.

The horse talked and not just a few word, but complete sentences. He carried on a full conversation with his buddy boy Wilbur. He was smart, sarcastic, a bit self-centered, but he had a heart of gold. He could read, play chess, play paddle ball and do all sorts of stuff. He was the best.

Mr. Ed must have been like the greatest pet ever, because Wilbur spent all of his time out in the barn with him and not with that hot wife of his. Of course, Wilbur was a massive putz to begin with.

I remember as a child when Mr. Ed first came on television. I liked it, but not being a horse owner, just a horse lover, back in those days, did not really appreciate some of Ed's comments. Now after having owned and studied in detail about horses for many years, getting the opportunity to watch these old episodes again has been unbelievable. He is remarkable and very funny. I have fallen in love with Ed all over again. I would strongly recommend any who have never seen the show, or those who have not watched it for many years, to tune in and watch it. I love his references to horse racing. When he wears those glasses and reads books and newspapers, it is just hilarious. And when he places phone calls to order something he has decided he needs, that is so good. The conversations he has with other horses, in horse talk with written words provided for the audience so we know what they are talking about is great. Ed was a classic, a show that should always be available. Videos of his show would be a great hit for us baby boomers, as well as the new audience that may be available since his return to satellite TV.

Even though it was a really dumb idea for a TV show, there are several factors that saved it. For one thing, the horse doesn't just talk, but also says funny things. I especially liked the time when Wilbur was mad at Ed over something and came rushing into the barn bawling him out. Ed just said, "My! Aren't we grouchy this morning." Wilbur Post falls into the tradition of Darren Stevens (the first one) and Captain Binghampton - he has greasy hair, acts finicky, and gets mad easily. And despite the negative remarks Stan Uzbeck has made about me recently, I agree with his funny observation about Wilbur - why on earth would he spend all that time in the barn with his horse when he's got such a foxy wife in the house?

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure Mr. Ed is just the coolest talking horse, but once the novelty wore off I think he'd just get annoying. It was a pretty clever idea, if one thinks about it though. Who would ever think of revolving a whole show around a horse that talked? I'm still not convinced he really did talk, though... Maybe Wilbur was just a little schitzo.

WOW! I can't believe there aren't more Mr. Ed fans out there! Especially when you consider that Ed made a huge splash in the mid-60's which also launched a successful marketing campaign (lunchboxes, toys, records of the hit theme song). The show was obviously a take off of the old Frances the talking mule movies with Donald O'Connor (which I also loved as a kid) but was still a pretty cute concept for TV at the time. Almost every child wants a horse at one time or another and, since my parents refused to let me keep one on our carport as I suggested, I settled for the wonderful, wise, and amusing likes of Mr. Ed. I think this line from the theme song best describes just how wise Ed really was, "People yakkity-yak a streak and waste your time of day, but Mister Ed will never speak unless he has something to say!" Ed had it together.
