One of the finest humanitarians ever to lead a nation-state, Ben-Gurion set a standard that few have even tried to meet. A fair minded egalitarian, he would be a welcome relief were he in power today.

Ben Gurion is one of the most overrated leaders of modern times, except for his ego. He almost certainly couldve been much more effective in getting Jews out of Europe during The Holocaust(see Tom Segev's, The Seventh Million) and his recklessness almost led to a civil war with Menachem Begin-who avoided it-and which could've had serious consequences during Israel's founding. It's difficult to imagine Manachem Begin-who was accused of recklessness-firing on the Altalena-carrying much needed munitions;Begin was probably much more of a positive factor than Ben Gurion,in Israel's re-birth.

David Ben-Guiron was definitely one of the most influential leaders of the 20th Century. He was the first Prime Minister of Israel, his tradition looms large in that country. He was a critical figure in bringing about the establishment of the state of Israel. He was an efficient leader who was tough as nails. Ben-Gurion had to be if he expected Israel to survive in the Middle East surrounded by hostile states. He came to Palestine in 1906 as part of the first wave of Jews who were active Zionist, socialist, egalitarian, and very nationalistic. During the First World War he cooperated with the British but turned on colonial adminstration after the 2nd World War. He was confrontative with the Arabs because he had to be from a defensive standpoint, but he also believed that ultimately constant warfare with their neighbors and the Palestinians would only hurt the prospect of a Jewish state. He believed in giving the Arabs equal rights to those who would accept it. More than any other person, Ben-Guiron is responsible for the modern state of Israel.

I'm surprised no one has commented yet on one of the most influential leaders of the 20th century. Ben-Gurion founded the State of Israel, after leading a moderate Jewish group in Palestine for many years, working closely with the British. Interestingly, he is on record several times advocating absolute equal rights for Arab inhabitants of Palestine--under no account must we injure the rights of the inhabitants. I'd like to see the current leaders there as fair-minded as this man.
