Watching Field of Dreams made Shoeless Joe my favorite. The "underdog". He deserves to be in the Hall of Fame.

HALL YES! I'm from Joe Jackson's home town (Greenville SC). We've started an effort to get him into the Hall of Fame. Whether or not he shared guilt in the 1919 Black Sox Scandal, he still served his entire lifetime ban. He was undeniably one of the greatest all time players. If you want to help, go to www.hallyes.com and sign the petition. We'd appreciate the help.

worst player ever he is a sell out

"Too dumb to live" is not a defense. Selling a WS is a death-penalty offense.

Was he guilty in 1919? Absolutely. Should he be in Cooperstown? Absolutely. The ban was for life and he died in 1951. If Rose goes in and Jackson stays out, justice will not be served.

One of the greatest hitters of all-time, it was said that Babe Ruth copied Shoeless Joe Jackson's swing. That being said, does this player belong in the baseball Hall of Fame? You know what? Maybe it is better that Jackson never gets enshrined (and not for any obvious notoriety which has tainted his legacy). Being a notorious legend as Joe Jackson is today, he is still remembered by many afficionados who keep his name alive in the annals of baseball lore. In effect, Jackson's missing name on a roll of Hall of Fame players only adds mystique to this unfortunate South Carolinian. The greater legacy, however, maybe that he is more remembered (for good or bad) than a great player by the name of Mel Ott who did not involve himself in any mishaps or ill-advised schemes which embarrass the game. In a society that feeds off human car-wrecks such as Steve Howe and Jose Canseco, it is not a surprise that Shoeless Joe is more remembered than the sweet swinging Cajun gentleman, Ott. This is unfortunate, to say the least.

Jackson was the most famous of eight Chicago White Sox players banned from baseball in 1920. They were banned for supposedly accepting bribes to make Chicago lose the 1919 World Series to Cincinnati. After this he never played baseball again.

Joe Jackson could have been considered one of the greatest players of all time, but the 1919 scandal greatly diminished his career.

A hard one to figure out. Yes, he was a great player. But he is definitely second-tier great. Shoeless Joe does not compare to Ruth, Cobb, or even Tony Gwynn for that matter. He never won an MVP award or even a single gem of the Triple Crown. He probably missed 4 years of productive play after getting banned from baseball, thus could have ammassed even more impressive numbers. But Ted Williams and Joe DiMaggio also lost that many years fighting for our country. Jackson would easily be a Hall of Famer, had he not taken his 30 pieces of silver to throw the 1919 World Series. While Jackson steadfastly insisted he played hard in that series, then what does that make him, a double-double crosser I guess. Maybe one day, they'll open the doors of the Hall Fame for Shoeless Joe and fellow cheater Pete Rose. We can all hold our noses when they do.

Not that familiar with him...

Joe Jackson was one of the most graceful players to ever play. He played only 12 seasons but in that time frame he compiled 1,772 hits, 307 doubles, 168 triples, 202 stolen bases, and a lifetime average of .356. His best season was in 1911 playing for the Cleveland Naps. That season he had a .408 average, 126 runs scored, 233 hits, 45 doubles, 19 triples, 7 homeruns, and 83 RBI's. Joe Jackson's best days were with the Chicago Whitesox from 1915 - 1920. Even thogh Jackson's not in the Hall of Fame he is till considered one of Baseball's greatest players.

They should have Jackson's picture next to the word LEGEND in the dictionary.

As a Player he was a nicer but not quite as good Ty Cobb. And he took the money.. Sorry Joe. Three stars for you.

A great but not top 10

He is why Pete Rose shouldn't be in the Hall of Fame.

You may ask why would I give this all-time great only 3 stars. The answer is a number of reasons. For 1 he accepted money to throw the WORLD SERIES. Some might say what he accepted the money but didn't accept the fact that he was going to lose on purpose. I give him 3 stars because he was one of the greatest players of all-time, and could of been betterif they kept him in baseball. I take away 2 stars because he put money in front of his morals.
cjs13 07/02/2003
deserves to be in the hall, and unfortunately he played in a time, for him where stricter morals were followed..steve howe, strawberry, etc. if he would have played in a modern day people would have looked at him as a poor uneducated fool and given him a break, selig is just keeping it going by not addressing the issue..along with rose..
ellajedlicka21 10/19/2001
This guy is so awesome that Babe Ruth wanted to model his swing after Jackson's.
Ruby 11/28/1999
A great talent certainly, but this revisionist history that he was clean from the 1919 scandal just ain't so. He confessed to the crime! His supposedly great stats from the 1919 WS were inflated from the one game when the Sox showed up to play b/c the gamblers were late with the $$. His fielding was shoddy throughout...
SHER79DU 10/26/1999
Shoeless Joe deserves more fame, he should be put in the Hall of Fame. They never proved he was part of the scandal, and he was a good player.
