Might have been O.K. for one season. Kept waiting for the writing to improve. Never happened.

Not one of my favorite shows. The passage of time, which can sometimes make me feel nostalgic about shows or songs that I used to hate, has done nothing to improve my feelings for this "All In The Family" spin-off. Basically, it's a black version of "All In The Family". Unfortunately, Sherman Hemsley is NOT Carroll O'Connor. Isabel Sanford is not Jean Stapleton. Mike/Damon Evans is (or are) NOT Meathead. Where "All In The Family" bravely tackled inflammatory topical issues while almost always being hysterically funny (at least until its later years), "The Jeffersons" seemed to focus primarily on George Jefferson making snide comments about his interracial "zebra" neighbors, or being made a fool of by his abrasive maid.

another one of my best shows, you gotta love mr jefferson

I didn't think it was all that great, but, I did like to watch him and Louise arguing. That was the funniest part of the whole show.
CanadaSucks 10/16/2006
Very dated, but still goofy and funny. . .every time that guy walked to answer the door I laughed. . .

Not a bad show, but I'm rounding down since I could never consistently get into "The Jeffersons". This series (another spin-off from "All In The Family") was obviously a reversal of "Good Times", as it portrayed a nouveau riche African-American family. One of the problems I had was the persistent stereotyping, and the producers missed an opportunity to be more groundbreaking in my opinion. I will say that Paul Benedict as the English neighbor Harry Bentley provided a different comedic spin for the show, but Marla Gibbs (as Florence) was relied on too heavily in the latter years of the series. Of course, it goes without saying that "The Jeffersons" did have one of the greatest theme songs.

Sometimes very funny, sometimes just annoying.

I was by the lake with my buddies once when this group of negros was climbing down the cliff. I said to Ted : "The Jeffersons are coming!" Then Ted said: "I guess were moving on up!"

I used to hate being forced to watch this and trapper John by my then girlfriend at her house.George was pompus and unfunny with talentless Weizy.Dull white neighbors and equally uninterested and untalented Marla Gibbs.I wish they moved to the ghetto and got mugged.
kattwoman 10/02/2005
it had its moments. florence was funny as was mama jefferson. florence gave it good to mr jefferson.
martinema 04/26/2005
It was a good show but it would never be as good as All In The Family.
Throwback72 06/21/2004
A great show not Quite on the level of Sanford but I can still watch it today. George was Unique.
Indio70 04/28/2004
In no way shape or form as good or as socially significant as GOOD TIMES (the all-time Greatest of Black sitcoms -- w/ Redd Foxx & The Cos tied for a distant second -- leaving the Shermster at #4)...

I guess George Jefferson was supposed to be the white Archie Bunker, and he was absolutely hysterical. Yes, in this politically correct era, he could be constueed as a racist, but I think what Norman Lear was trying to say was, Look, this guy is a racist, and see how ridiculous he is. Isabel Sanford was wonderful as his assertive wife, Louise, who put George in his place, and there were some good supporting characters, too, like Bentley, the interracial couple, and the tip-greedy doorman.

Mildly funny until the racism kicks in, then way down.

You almost can't help but like the Jeffersons. I know the humor is pretty crude, and hearing George use the word "honky" will only get so many laughs, but it's still a fun show to watch. Of course, Florence cutting George down to size is always the main attraction.

just trash

I still watch this everynight.

I loved Mother Jefferson! She was so underrated. This was a case where they just left the show go on way too long. I sat thru a Jefferson Marathon recently and was surprise how many storylines were repeated.

Great cast...Great fun..

The Jeffersons is very difficult to rate because in its catalogue one can find numerous examples of both the very best and very worst episodes in TV history. And unfortunately right now it's the worst ones that are sticking out in my mind--like virtually the entire 1984-85 season and the majority of eps produced the year prior to that. Oddly enough the very worst of the entire series was the 1980 season premier when George and Tom were signed up by their wives to run the marathon. But the first thirteen shows with Mike Evans as Lionel are very rewatchable. I remember being very glad he was coming back; Damon Evans was a poor replacement. Another role on the show played by two different actors was the landlord Mr. Whittendale (sp?), but strangely they kept switching back and forth over the run of the show. I prefer the wonderful hatchet-faced Jack Fletcher in the role by far; he played the part in the classic maid strike episode in which he was thrown out of the apartment by George with the words "Let the doorknob hit ya where the good Lord split ya!" Great moment! Yeah, I prefer to remember this show fondly.

well we moviin on up, to da east sidez, to a deluxe apartment in da sky, well we movin on up, to da east side, we finally got a peice of da pie. yes the show,fo real, fo real
ellajedlicka21 03/26/2002
The Jeffersons were hilarious. George is a classic character, the spiteful little man. It has a great theme song too--Movin' on Up.
Solenoid DH 02/21/2002
A typical liberal racist show that manages to focus attention on skin color, and insults blacks & whites at the same time.
Errol 02/09/2002
Norman Lear's same old plate of beans (see All In The Family). However, the characters were sometimes likeable and funny.
otlady27 12/13/2001
I didn't really understand it much as a kid, but now from watching reruns, I've begun to appreciate how genuine and FUNNY "The Jeffersons" really is. Sure, the writing was a bit corny sometimes and some of the situations were a bit out there, but overall it was a very good show, with a talented cast. I wish the TV shows of today were as funny (without resorting to sex or obsenity) and honest as this one.

This show is purely a classic. The Jeffersons is the first show that ever displayed a successfull black family. All around excellent spin off of All In the Family. Spin off don't usually do that well. George and Flarance were always entertaining. My personal favorite was Mr. Bentley. Man alive, that guy was weird.
callmetootie 04/04/2001
The Jeffersons is the living proof that you can spin-off a show, and that you can make a hit sitcom using small characters. And I hope that everyone knows that this was a spin-off of All In The Family. Sherman Hemsley, Isabel Sanford, Marla Gibbs, Zara Cully, Mike Evans, and Paul Benedict held the show togther perfectly. I had a certain charm for Zara Cully in her role as Mother Jefferson. It was sad that she died 3 years after the show started.
KRAMNOR 03/19/2001
ONE OF THE BEST BLACK SHOWS IN TELEVISION HISTORY. SHERMAN AND MARLA ARE GREAT!
mongrelpup 01/24/2001
I'm actually kind of surprised at how well this show DOESN'T hold up. The Jeffersons was an important show because it was the first mainstream comedy to feature middle-class successful blacks, and, like most of the programs I enjoyed in the 70's, I have a nostalgic fondness for it. Marla Gibbs is wonderful and the rest of the cast is appealing. The humor does have a certain slap-stick charm, but overall the writing is pretty bad.
Princess27 01/13/2001
I loved this show. It always made me laugh. My favorite character was Florence. Now I have to watch Nick At Nite to see this great show.
Cassie94 11/29/2000
One of the best comedies every. Was always very funny and one of the few shows that were as good as the shows the spun off of.
SamIAm 10/04/2000
"Moovin on up..to the East Side, we finally got our piece of the pie" a great comedy, especially if you watched George and Weezie on All in the Family. George with that strut, Florence's Wise cracks Willis' dopey remarks and Mrs. Willis' cool attitude. A great assortment of characters.
peku5492du 07/04/2000
Loved all the characters on "The Jeffersons"...even from their earlier days as neighbors of the Bunkers'. Always great comedy between George & Weezie and of course, George & Florence. Marla Gibbs & Paul Benedict were excellent...and I couldn't help liking the Willis's, too. Weren't they the first inter-racial married couple on TV???

The Jeffersons is a cool black T.V show.
