Even if you watch it on a satellite channel or on DVD, this show is hilarious with how stubborn Lou Grant and how bumbling Ted Baxter was. Even when I was born about seven years after its last showing, the characters were appealing to any age. There would not be another show like this, or its spinoffs. The 70's had great ladies looking beautiful- Mary and Valerie are priceless to this show. It certainly deserved nearly 30 Emmys.

I liked this show, and used to watch it pretty regularly each week in its original run. But I gotta agree with some of the posters that in retrospect it seems a bit overrated to me, and dated. One good poster point was it being the best of the character ensemble-driven shows, I think ever -- or the real trail blazer for that in the modern TV era. I never thought Mary Tyler Moore was this great legendary actor or comedian that some in the media have conveyed her as being -- I think the show didn't work because of her alone, nor would have -- it was the cast's clicking with one another, and the unbelievably well-developed characters and ironic plot twists and dialogue, that made this sitcom shine in the 1970s. ;)

A few great episodes and the rest are quite forgettable.
Snoopy57 02/15/2008
What a great show! Mary Tyler Moore was such a beauty, and she is still a lovely lady. The show was great comedy.
SerpentSmasher 09/06/2007
Good stuff. The Chuckles the Clown episode is a riot.

should be in second place right behind all in the family or mash

I coudn't stand Mary Tyler Moore and couldn't take all her whining in the shows she was on, especially this one. My mother HAD to watch it every week and in those days most people only had one TV. Thank God I haven't seen any repeats of this show in years!
SharonParry 10/25/2006
It was a good old show. Mary was awesome and her friend Rhoda made a great pair for this show. Always doing some sort of scheming and never actually getting any where for all their efforts.
Krypto 10/06/2006
Best character driven comedy ever! Slightly ahead of its time at times, timeless though dated.
VirileVagabond 09/23/2006
Though I haven't seen this show in some time, "Mary Tyler Moore" (aka "The Mary Tyler Moore Show") was indeed one of the best series ever produced. As a 30ish single career woman, Moore's character was more independent than other female characters of the day, and the ensemble cast was truly talented (e.g., Ed Asner, Ted Knight, and Betty White). To this day, I have to say that "I hate spunk".
JuneF 09/23/2006
Watched it every week and loved it. They rerun so many old shows, yet this one never seems to make a comeback. Mary, Ed, Betty, Valerie and all the stars were great, as were the stories and jokes.
Suitelife 08/27/2006
This show was legendary. I wish Lifetime would air it. Loved all the stars and guests who appeared. Valerie Harper, Ed Asner, Betty White, Cloris Leachman...and on and on. Good old days.
Diedre 06/17/2006
Exceptional cast, with my favorite being Betty White. Ed Asner played a great boss and Valerie Harper was funny as Mary's friend. I loved the funeral scene for Chuckles the Clown!!

Exceptionally unremarkable! :D

A thirty something year old virgin. Yeah right.

I wish they would put it back on tv. The shows from the 60's- 70's are what I would call the classic tv shows. Mary Tyler Moore is on dvd, but I wish they were on video instead of dvd. I didn't care to watch the first two because you couldn't play it all the way through. I would rather watch shows on video than dvd anyways, because they seem to last longer.

One of my all time favorite shows. Initally I started watching just to see MTM. She was a real babe back then. Before the end of the first season I fell in love with the entire cast. The writing was witty and sophisticated for the time. The support cast was top notch. This was one of the few shows that made me laugh out loud. I really enjoyed the scenes when the girls (Phyllis, Rhoda and Mary) got together. While I loved all the characters, my favorite was Betty White as manhungry Sue Ann. I actually cried at the end of the series finale. That only happened once before when The Carol Burnett Show ended. The MTM shows are now in dvd. I've already purchased seasons one thru three. I still laugh out loud!

I never saw the appeal of this show and i never will.I don't care if Mary makes it all.I wouldn't care if she had a will work for food sign on the street or if she hit the power ball. After she left Dick Van Dyke show she was a boring celebrity in her so called craft.Ted Knight would be the only reason to watch this show if you don't go into a coma first.
kattwoman 10/02/2005
this show was just ok with me though it starred a talented cast.
dvd_mtm 09/01/2005
Mary Tyler Moore is obviously one of the best actresses of all time. She did an amazing job with the dick van dyke show and her talents only improved as the years went on. The Mary Tyler Moore show was probably one of the greats of the 1970's.
x_junkie 07/29/2005
smart AND funny. one of the best shows ever!
irishgit 03/25/2005
Never cared much for this, particularly because it depicted a newsroom almost entirely uninterested in the news. Too much trivial angst, although it was well written, and with a few exceptions, well acted.
BoogieBear 08/29/2004
One of my all-time favorite sitcoms!! Extremely well-written with a stellar cast made MTM a funny and classy show!
TMTMSfan 08/19/2004
I think TMTMS is the best series ever on television. The class and sophistication puts it in a class all by itself and makes most television series look like 5th grade productions.
jgls 07/12/2004
quite possibly the most obnoxious supporting cast of all-time. if i had to spend time at work with ted knight, gavin macleod, and ed asner, and come home to valerie harper and cloris leachman i would stick a gun in my mouth and blow the back of my head off.
Throwback72 06/21/2004
Love the theme song and I still like show today
Moosekarloff 12/23/2003
Tired and unfunny formulaic sitcom. Nothing different or groundbreaking here. The cast was appealling, but the scripts were very commonplace. And MTM has shown that she lacked the talent to be a bankable star for an enduring period, which explains why this show went off the air her career went into the terlet.
astroboy 08/24/2003
One of the best if not the best ensemble comedy shows. This show had characters we loved, hated and could relate to.It handled poignant subjects and was not just a laff-fest.This show is still watchable today and will be in ten years.Easily one of the greatest shows of all time.
kolby1973 08/14/2003
This is one of the better sitcoms out of the 70's. I can actually sit thru it without falling asleep or getting angry. Mary Tyler Moore was so beautiful, and such an excellent actress in the 70's and 80's. Now she seems so bitter. But I do recommend this show to everyone !
camrab01 06/13/2003
Mary Tyler Moore show is my all time favorite show. I like the old sitcoms from the 60's and 70's better than today's sitcoms, because they are clean-cut ones. I also like the theme song. It's my favorite tv theme song.
getback 05/08/2003
given the credit that "that girl" should get a good show without a doubt
John Shuster 05/01/2003
The last show is its best show. What a sweetheart of a show!
philc 03/08/2003
What a great show. It was always funny and the writers were excellent. Stellar cast with of course MTM taking the cake, but Sue Ann (Betty White) was a real winner too. This should be rated closer to the very top of the list.
bboop1104 03/02/2003
Funny show and really a break through show for women.
red630 12/09/2002
From the start to the end this was one of the best written television shows of all time.
SoSingular 11/04/2002
This show is not quite as good as the Rhoda show, but it is no dog.
Megs 10/13/2002
MTM continues to gather fans even in the new millenium! I should know...I'm 13! the show ended before I was born! Mary Tyler Moore is an icon to me...I want to be just like her! She is a great actress and very beautiful! yeah!
radiogman 08/15/2002
I always thought this show was a bit over-rated but I have to give it a 4 just for the "Chuckles The Clown" episode, One of the funniest single episodes in TV history.
izzird1 07/10/2002
I can't believe that the BEST situation comedy of the 70's has an average rating of 3. That is really pathetic.
Quincy 06/30/2002
How sad that a bunch of anonymous mopes have cost this show its deserved place at the top of the list. Classy as classy gets and always well written and hilarious.
Joey1963 06/02/2002
An awesome show...it was funny without being slapstick...a classic!
Mark Brainard 05/12/2002
Best sitcom ever...amazing cast.
Tootie_Rox 05/09/2002
Love is all around! I love Mary!!!
Chaotician23 03/26/2002
Rather funny. It was good until it became mostly a drama.
Errol 02/13/2002
A little overrated. I thought Mary Tyler Moore was much funnier on The Dick Van Dyke Show. That is where her truly classic routines were. The MTM Show could be funny sometimes but not enough to motivate me to watch the reruns. Something about the weird attitudes of the 70s tainted a lot of shows from then. But I will say they didn't taint MTM as much as they did its vaious spinoffs. They were bad.
joan1943 01/04/2002
I was wanted to be Mary Tyler Moore(Mary Richards)
ClassicTVFan47 12/04/2001
Another great classic sitcom of the 50s to 70s era. Mary proved herself as a talented comedy actress on the also-excellent Dick Van Dyke Show and got her own sitcom. Slapstick is mostly put aside for humorous dialogue, especially from Ted Baxter, the dunce-worthy Newsman and, of course, Chuckles the Clown.
Texx 11/27/2001
The best cast of any sitcom ever. MTM had it all: the writing, the performances, the big laughs, the heart touching moments, and never pandered to the audience to achieve them. The clown's funeral is one of the best loved tv clips of all time only to be matched with the final group hug. Mary and Valerie Harper had that rare kind of chemistry that captivates your interest in their relationship.
1971 09/12/2001
one of the best shows of all time.
knowhere man 06/26/2001
The McBEAL of its day. My favorite is when CHUCKLES THE CLOWN died and MARY goes from crying to laughing uncontrollably. It was a sign of its time. Everyone wanted to date Mary. Maybe I should have given it an O.K.
