Roseanne herself was annoying. The plots and overall humor were pretty good. The well ran a little dry as the show entered the mid-90's. However it was pretty good from '88 to about '93. Then it got old.

The first season was the best in my opinion. It was almost like it was non scripted and it worked. As the seasons went on I lost interest.I still can't pass up a marathon on the oxygen channel though.
AmberCrane 10/16/2008
I watch them ever after noon the show is still funny.
Molfan 08/04/2008
I would give this an average of 3.5. I liked the first few seasons.I liked the fact that this was about a family that was having a hard time making ends meet. They did NOT live in a huge house and have high paying jobs. The parents did not have model perfect bodies. The kids could be mouthy { a bit mouthier than I liked} I think the last couple seasons ruined this show.the last season in particular, was lousy. I think Roseanne took a show that was fine at first and turned it into a joke by the last two seasons. Too bad since it started out good.
irishgit 08/04/2008
The first few seasons were very clever and funny, but they ran out of jokes, and the cast couldn't sustain the premise.
kidicarus333 08/03/2008
One of the best sitcoms ever, easily. Sure it went on maybe two season too long, but in it's golden years Roseanne was untouchable. Blue collar honest comedy at it's best. Love her or hate her Rosie was really funny in this show.
louiethe20th 04/29/2008
Roseanne's voice could become tiresome and annoying at times, but she was very funny much of the time and her supporting cast of John Goodman and the others made for a pretty enjoyable show.
Spike65 04/12/2008
I'm giving this five stars for the first few seasons. For quite a while Roseanne was just being loud and obnoxious because she was battling with the network execs. When she toned down the braying her acting and the shows quality went way up. Also a big plus for tackling some serious issues in a semi-humorous manner.
fb505206630 11/23/2007
Not that funny. She was uncouth and a slob. Seems that she still is :-(
twansalem 05/06/2007
The first two or three seasons were realy funny, but it went downhill pretty quickly. Although the Halloween episodes were always worth watching.
VirileVagabond 11/26/2006
Though not really a terrible series, I consider "Roseanne" more of a 90's show since the vast majority of its run was during that decade. Nevertheless, (ignoring Roseanne's real life personality) this series did start off relatively strong, making an apparently good faith attempt to portray a blue collar family and tackling interesting issues, and some of the cast were particular strong (i.e. John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf, and Sara Gilbert). Nevertheless, the show eventually lingered for far too long and resorted to some shock and foolish twists during the final seasons.
Djahuti 09/19/2006
I thought she was pretty funny, and the guy who played her husband (name escapes me at the moment) was GREAT.One of the better shows of the era IMO.
Jeremy00081 09/19/2006
This show was well-written and often very funny, but I'm sorry, Roseanne gets too annoying to watch for 30 straight minutes. I actually used to look forward to watching this show, then wondered what the hell was wrong with me about halfway through each episode. 3 and a half stars for the clever, funny writers
trebon1038 07/24/2006
Rosanne is just pure raw humor....shows the typical blue collar family in its disfunctions and struggles and does it in a very funny way!
Limpin' Trenchfoot 07/24/2006
Started off quite well, then went down faster than Bill Clinton's pants. Generally pretty poor compared to Frasier, Cheers, Seinfeld and Taxi
NativeSun31 06/29/2006
Roseanne is our Queen. She is our Queen of white trash. All Hale the Queen. I love the show and I watch it everynight on Nick at Nite. Most people dont like her because she says whatever is on her mind. She is not afraid to tell people excatly what she thinks. I bow to her our Queen.
edt4 12/23/2005
Like other non-actor Jerry Seinfeld, Roseanne had the good sense to surround herself with talented people (John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf, etc.), and it lifted this show from the ordinary to something a bit more than that. Not great or even really good TV, it was nonetheless a diverting half-hour when it came on, and there were certainly far worse shows populating the TV-landscape. Still are, unfortunately...
brownie 09/29/2005
One year it was voted the most liked show by readers of TV GUIDE, it was also voted most hated show.
Tricktee5 05/01/2005
This show was great. It shows what REAL life is about. If you can't tolerate the real meaning of life then you shouldnt watch this show. Our world isnt like the Cleavers.
Randyman 04/22/2005
Quite possibly the worst television show in the history of television.
Mr.Political 03/27/2005
Well, hopefully most would not consider this an accurate representation of a family and to those who do...seek counseling (lol). The show was rather abrasive, obnoxious, loud and of course, dysfunctional. In the first few seasons Roseanne was a pretty funny show that you didn't need to take too seriously, but afterwards it made the mistake many comedy series make...it became too dramatic. Almost every episode in the last two seasons consisted of some type of life altering encounter; and an unrealistic one at that.
iluvfhandafhv 03/23/2005
I hate this f***ing show! Stupidest crap that anyone would waste brain cells on. It should've never been put on the air. That show is for morons and retards.
ashleykiss 02/15/2005
The show was brilliant it's first six seasons.....I think what made it sink was that it let itself go over the top....it's almost like there were two different tv shows after season seven began. Either way, it's still one of my all-time favorites.....
andillus 01/10/2005
I gotta say, I love this show. I thought John Goodman as Dan was absolutley brilliant. It would have gotten a 5 if it wasen't for the depressing final episode that I felt took away from the all around essence of the show.
mamas family sucks 12/30/2004
I think this show was a clone of mamas family, which as we all know means that it sucks. Definitely not watchable.
opinion585 11/06/2004
I can't believe this show is so close to the bottom of the list. it is one of the most watchable shows. I can't explain it, but its just good! I am going to sound crazy when i say this, but i don't think roseanne would make a bad wife, at least the charecter she plays. I liked how the show was always funny, some of the jokes could make you laugh so hard that you druled! The only reason i didnt give it 5 stars is because of the last season, the winning the lottery thing, i could handle, it wasn't THAT bad, but on the last episode when they made the whole show a fake story, i was pissed. They should make another final episode and have it so that maybe they didnt win the lottery, but dan is still alive, the daughters still married the same guys, and jakie isn't gay, that ruined it! if they didn't make the last episode like they did, they could have made a movie like growing pains did, i would have liked to see that, i hope they do something like that and just forget all about the last episode!
Actress33kCome dy 09/05/2004
All I have to say is, white trash never was this funny! I love Roseanne, and the cast was perfect, KUDOS TO EVERYONE AT ROSEANNE, I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!
ihatetheheat 08/11/2004
This was one of my favorite shows of all time. It is also one of the most realistic. No they were not rich or beautiful and definately NOT perfect but they were genuine. Like a majority of people in mid America, they were average looking, hard working people just trying to get by. I would not classify them as white trash. They both worked for a living and did take reasonably good care of the kids although I didn't quite agree with some of their parenting techniques. The show had a lot of funny moments and it kept me entertained. The charactors were obnoxious and always smarting off but they were still funny and enjoyable to watch although you would sometimes feel like smacking Darlene in the mouth. There was never a dull moment, the kids were always getting into trouble and you never knew what was going to happen next. Roseanne herself was loud and obnoxious and didn't take any crap from anyone. She always spoke whatever was on her mind and had a lot of hilarious remarks. I liked that episode where this stuck up b...ch moved in next door and Roseanne really gave her a piece of her mind! I think the last few seasons weren't that great though an they should have stopped before they were ahead.
eric04 08/08/2004
If this show projected the typical American family (as in the dominant type of family that exists in America)as it is, was often touted as doing, then can you possibly question why so much of the world thinks we suck? And no, I am not saying that to be unpatriotic, but only fans of this type of show would think that. Many, many families struggle with finances and the like, but I don't know how many of them actually equate that with the necessity to be slovenly and obnoxious. These people on this show were FAR from typical.
BeatlesfanStev eo 07/13/2004
The show was ok but I took of a star because Roseanne is a loser.
martinema 07/10/2004
This is one of the worst show that is on nick at night this is so stuped Roseanne is a big fat cow that like to mind outher people bisnes.
GypsyRoseLeigh 05/21/2004
I was really surprised to see what a low rating this show has on this site! I loved it. At least for the first few seasons. I KNOW Roseanne is abrasive to say the least and the show could be crude. But that doesn't erase the fact that it was often hilarious! The show was perfectly cast. Especially the seemingly forgotten Laurie Metcalf as Roseanne's sister Jackie. She was brilliant! And she received 3 Emmies for her work on the show to prove it (plus numerous other nominations). Here's a couple of my favorite lines: (Why D.J. is spending so much time in the bathroom) DARLENE: Trust me, he goes in that room cause it's the only one with a lock on it, and he's in there for like an hour at a time. Which means he's either really, really good at it, or really, really bad at it! ROSEANNE: Well I don't want you to give him any grief about this ya know, cause you could traumatize him and turn him into a serial killer! DARLENE: Well don't worry, how much damage could he do with only one free hand? __________________ [During a tornado] ROSEANNE: What's the worst that can happen? So the tornado picks up our house and slams it down in a better neighborhood. _____________________ BECKY: No one could eat this crud. DAN: Hey, if you don't finish your crud, you're not gonna get any crap for dessert. _____________ DAN: [to D.J] Eating cardboard can ruin your life. You could end up in the street living in a box. Then you'll eat the box, and you'll be homeless.
Redoedo 03/30/2004
I've never been too fond of Roseanne as a person, but I usually enjoyed this show. She had a solid supporting cast and the show was a realistic look at an edgy mom that has to deal with her own problems and those of her bratty kids. The show should have been canceled much earlier, however, as the last few seasons were largely forgetable.
doodosh 03/09/2004
This show was incredible. It was and is one of the funniest shows ever. A lot of sitcoms today still don't come close to matching its humor. I think its horrible that people are calling Roseanne names and saying she is lazy, have you met her? Once you meet her and get to know her, then I might listen to your opinion
macca/darren 02/13/2004
this show was classic up to the last few years. I guess a lot of people remember those.
kolby1973 12/25/2003
One of the most annoying tv shows ever. It wasn't Roseanne that I got annoyed with either. I thought she was pretty good in this show, it was her horrid supporting cast. The kids, the husband, the lesbian, the gay restaraunt manager. They were all terrible. I try to avoid this show at all costs when flipping thru the channels. It is a travesty that Nick At Nite puts this show on their line up...awful!
smartsnail13 12/24/2003
I LOVED this show!! I still watch re-runs! The whole cast was hilarious!!! Especially Darlene and Dan!!! The characters were sooooo realistic! They'r just like everyday people. I didn't like when they won the lottery and got new furniture and stuff. That was just unlike anything else on the show. Other then that i had no problems with it. I can't beleive so many people hated it! Evidently lots of people are interested in the perfect hollywood sitcom where there's always a happy ending (which is definently not real life)! I also think most of the negative comments are about Roseanne's personal life which has nothing to do with the show!
CanadaSucks 10/10/2003
Obnoxious, fat, and a nasal voice? Yikes. What an awful show. Typical family comedy/drama where the 'children' are just miniature wisecracking adults.
President -X-D 10/10/2003
This show couldn't decide if it was high-drama, slapstick comedy or a variety show! I remember them doing both drama and comedy well, but the mix didn't work at all here. Are these people zany singers and dancers or are they takling "tough family issues"? Then they decided to have them win the lottery - how pointless. Shows that waste potential like that make me more angry than shows that are bad through and through
MissPackRat4Je sus 10/10/2003
I give this program three stars because the early episodes were great. The later years of the show were total trash. In the early years, there was a bittersweetness I admired, and it was absolutely funny. A tad bit crude at times, but not enough to turn me off. Throughout the run of the show, the "sweetness" gradually disappeared, and just became bitter.
mtenkate 08/28/2003
I enjoyed the show. I don't think sitcom stars need to be supermodels to be funny. The show did get quite outlandish at times, and was quite serious at others, but it seems to me that many memorable shows are like that. Remember, we are not supposed to be judging the ACTORS, but the show itself..had a lot of laughs with this one, and love watching the reruns. ( I secretly suspect that there will always be some people who will never like a show that portrays a strong opinionated woman, especially is she doen't have any so called redeeming qualities..like a great body) Thanks for listening!
help me 06/21/2003
stupid unfunny show. who wants to watch some fat ugly bitch making a fool out of herself
fresh 06/12/2003
i love how roseanne is a portrayal of a working class family and how the family members were able to make light of their situations. heavy dosages of wit and sarcasm makes this show one of my personal favourites.
Moosekarloff 06/05/2003
What's so entertaining about a couple of fat, ugly, stupid losers raising their retarded children to be fat, ugly, stupid losers? Pretty depressing premise of a supposed comedy. It was amazing this show polluted the airwaves for so long, but the fat, ugly, stupid losers farting around in the trailer parks of middle America had to have something to watch on the TVs they bought with their welfare checks. These fat, ugly, stupid losers farting around in the trailer parks of middle America finally had a TV show they could identify with as they chug-a-lugged beer the taxpayers footed the bill for. This was a paean to white trash mentality, and actually reached an audience, which speaks volumes about the direction this nation is going.
kamylienne 05/13/2003
I appreciate that the show wasn't too perfect and sappy like many other shows seemed to be. The last season was terrible, but I guess it wasn't supposed to be great or anything. Overall, I don't mind catching a rerun once in a while.
RebelYell1861 05/11/2003
I never could stand this show. Watching a morbidly obese trashy woman moan and groan to her family all day never really did appeal much to me.
AmazingMole 03/19/2003
It is a shame that the moral police give a low rating to Roseanne. They can't handle a sitcom that deals with gay marriages & domestic violence. It is their lost. My favorite episodes was Leon's gay wedding & David's sex dream.
iker 03/02/2003
Just lousy. I can't make it through an entire episode. She is even more blue collar than the character she portrays.
gendron13 02/26/2003
I really like this show and I watch it every day the only problem is that they have to bring sex into it.
Sharon3802 02/25/2003
If I could give it zero stars, I would. If anyone ever wanted to know how NOT to raise your kids, watch this. She had a big mouth, was ignorant to her kids (and they to her; I wonder why?) and was overall brash. Or should I say "trash"?
