I love the one when Fred defended Lamont in court, and Fred won, but had to pay a fine because of the contempt. Great show!!

I would give it a 5 but the last season brought my rating down a bit. In the last season several of the episodes just lacked the humor and great writing. The season finale was really a disappointment. Stuff like "Steinberg and Son" were just unoriginal and not very funny. But other than the last season this is one of my favorites and a great series.

I used to love watching this show on re-runs when I was a kid. Redd Foxx was so funny and the cast of characters were hilarious.
Spike65 08/22/2007
Another excellent comedy of the era. Mainly due to Redd Foxx and his buddies on the show. The only downside was it was so predictable. Fun nonetheless, and I still enjoy watching it on occasion.
CheckmateDD 04/11/2007
One of my favorite lines of all time was when Fred said to Aunt Ester, "you could put your face in dough and make gorilla cookies". The back and forth between them was a blast.

redd 'i'm coming to join you' foxx is a classic. i loved this show.
Conservatism 03/15/2007
A 70's classic. I still watch it today when it comes on TV Land.

Great show, one of the classics of the era. There ought to be a statue of Grady in every American city.
SharonParry 10/25/2006
I thought the show was pretty good. I also like the way he always seemed to make use of the junk in extaordinary ways, mostly for self serving purposes.
VirileVagabond 09/22/2006
Probably not a popular opinion, but I could never get into "Sanford & Son". Redd Foxx was funny enough, but the comedy was too urban and sophomoric for my tastes and certainly wouldn't be politically correct by contemporary standards (and that's not necessarily a bad thing). Also, the series wasn't even original, being based on the British show "Steptoe and Son". While not dreadful, "Sanford & Son" gets an admittedly subjective two stars.
jimorama 06/09/2006
Grady was growing weed in the back yard, and Lamont freaked out telling him "Get rid of it"..Grady replied its only "wild parseley". He complied with Lamonts request, threw it in the salad..and the two cops and Esther came over and ate the salad. I almost soiled myself it was so funny.
whamsabi 05/16/2006
Sanford and Son is one of the great shows ever! Far funnier than Cosby, Friends and a few others. Redd Foxx is and was hilarious. This show will live on forever!
frogger20190 05/15/2006
I bought Season 3 on DVD and every episode so far has me in stitches. I love the "Lamont..is that You" episode where Lamont and Rollo end up in a gay bar. They could not have that on TV today.....but you can watch people swimming in maggots for money or men sleeping together. TV has gone down the friggin tube....I digress-Sanford & Son was hysterical. Fred and Aunt Esther in a scene together-comic gold every time.
JohnSpina 03/23/2006
Redd Foxx's real name was John Fred Sanford.I loved when he called Lamont a dummy.Another one..."I am J.Paul Ghetto"
Drummond 03/10/2006
Didn't Lamont become a born again Christian later?
adc103051 03/10/2006
Fred was great, but that coke sniffing Lamont was worthless.
alpepper 02/27/2006
It was hilarious in 1973. And when I tune in to reruns in 2005, it is still fresh and hilarious. I can't imagine people saying that about Friends or Will&Gay 30 years from now. The magic of Sanford and Son was a combination of good ethnic humor and great characters, like Fred, Lamont, Grady, Julio, and my favorite of all, Aunt Esther. When Fred and Aunt Esther got together, you knew you were going to be doubled over laughing soon. Our era of political correctness makes ethnic jokes and even ugly aunt jokes undoable today. The 70s was a golden age for Black Sitcoms. Sanford & Son, Good Times, and Jeffersons were mainstays at my house (though Sanford was far funnier than the other two). There really hasn't been an equal one since (even Cosby). I think the problem is that shows like Sanford really hit on black issues in a humorous way, while shows like Bernie Mac and My Wife & Kids could be done just about the same if the characters were all white. Sanford and Son was based on a British comedy of the 1960s, entitled "Steptoe and Son."

great show, with possibly the best tv theme song ever.
miketou 02/26/2006
"Watch it sucka"! This was a great show. The cast was great. You were guaranteed a few laughs when Fred and Aunt Esther shared a scene. They don't make them like this anymore.
Mr Nuetron 12/09/2005
The Hijinx of one Fred G Sanford, classic.Red was a genius of T.V.comedy the aunt esther jokes are still the bomb.Lamount was a good straightman with his thug friend Rollo.Of course he had (Mr Miagi) Pat Morita as Au Chu and Gregory Sierra as his Puerto Rican Neighbor with his goat Julio. All the above providing joke fodder for Fred G. My favorite episode was when fred was trying to stop watching tv he went to a hypnotist but to no avail. The thing worked was he put a picture of Aunt Esther on his T.V., it was classic how he would make that face that he couldn'yt bear to look at it till he attacked it with a baseball bat.The earlys wre so good i forgave the last few horrid years it continued.
Brandy203 10/04/2005
I really like Sanford and Son, it is a true classic. I wish the season ran longer so their would be more shows. Redd Foxx is terrificly funny, 5 stars....
kattwoman 10/02/2005
redd foxx was one of a kind. he was very funny to watch.
Solenoid DH 08/30/2005
Demond Wilson was a good actor, and in real life he's a good man, someone I'd like to meet. But this show wasn't very good at all. There was too much over-acting, and it seemed that nearly all the jokes came from one person insulting another.
edt4 08/30/2005
I loved this show as a kid and the best episodes can still bring tears of laughter to my eyes. Well, when you have someone like Richard Pryor writing for you, what else can you expect? I'll put this show up against any of the so-called comedies they put out today. It was often crude and politically-incorrect, but I think that was part of its appeal. I loved Redd Foxx, but I actually thought some of the funniest episodes were done while he was on hiatus and Whitman Mayo as Grady attempted to fill his shoes. Also liked some of the bit players like Rollo and Skillet (Matthew Beard aka Stymie from the Little Rascals). Like many great shows, it overstayed its welcome and became boring and trite. In its glory days, though, it was the best, or at least the funniest. (Of course, I'm not completely objective. As a star-struck teen, I wrote Redd Foxx a fan letter and he sent me an autographed picture. Seems relatively minor now, but it was a big thing to me then.)

this show gets me laughing and crying every damn time! Just that tea bag that he would use forever... dip it, mark a mark on the wall to count the dips he got from that one tea bag...
irishgit 03/25/2005
Loathsome, badly written trash. Redd Foxx, who I once saw live doing stand-up, was wasted in this. I had occasion to see Steptoe and Son the British comedy this is based on a few times. It was far funnier and far more adventurous in its humour.
Juliet73 01/06/2005
I really enjoy this show. Red Foxx was very talented. I especially like the episodes with Esther and Grady. I didn't give it 5 stars because Lamont irritates me. Lamont is very disrespectful to Fred, that's not cool. But overall, very entertaining show.
defbean 12/31/2004
I wish it was on more. It is the only TV show I laugh at. The best episode is Tower of Power, where Fred makes a junk pile, which in his opinion is pure art, and tries to put in a museum. Update: The season DVDs are out now. Weird fact: After S and Son, Vietnam-vet Demond Wilson (Lamont) left and the show Sanford was aired which only lasted one season. I wish I could find the episodes for that.
Djahuti 12/03/2004
While it's definately dated, this show had a great cast, and Red Fox was a national treasure!Check out his stand up albums for a full-strength dose of his comuc genius!

Greatest TV show of all time when it comes to sitcoms. This show is hilarius now as it was back then? I see some people on here bashing this show...Its timeless funny and an alltime classic. i can never get enough of fred sanford...Redd Foxx actually ad-libs alot, and makes this show brilliant
scarletfeather 02/02/2004
I didn't appreciate this show until I was older and Sanford and Son was in syndication. Redd Foxx was hilarious as the grouchy junk dealer, and he had the perfect foil in Demond Wilson, who portrayed son Lamont.
WarGamefan93 12/10/2003
This is my favorite show ever!!! Redd Foxx is a genius and I wish he was still alive. Demond Wilson was in the Vietnam war and is now a pastor
brian joseph 12/04/2003
A terrific show, it managed I think to be quite wholesome but at the same time pretty naughty. .
THERESA 44 11/23/2003
I LOVE SANFORD AND SON I WATCH IT EVERY DAY A 4PM,7PM,7:30PM,1AM.I AM GLAD TVLAND PUT IT ON.
Box Office 11/14/2003
Good a few time around, but it's odd style may not appeal to everyone.
kolby1973 10/15/2003
Sanford and his son were two of the most annoying characters on tv. Total trash tv....stupid...
brianjoseph 10/14/2003
Great show..very racey for it's time. I could'nt believe it when one black person called another black a nigger! I guess they got away with it because this was a all black show. (except for that white stupid cop that sometimes showed up.)
kahfess 07/13/2003
I remember this show with fondness. It was always amusing to see what this junk man and his son would get into. From Fred Sanford and his imaginary heart attacks to Lamont having to always pick up the pieces of any mess that Fred got them both into. For a junk business, it was pretty funny.
scott roberts 07/04/2003
Sandford and Son is my all-time favorite television sitcom...PERIOD! The episode that features "THE THREE DEGREES" is a must see for the avid Sandford and Son fan.
tec1975 06/29/2003
Redd Foxx still cracks me up. Sanford and Son was one of the funniest sitcoms of the 1970's. A great show and a wonderful and hilarious cast of goofy characters. I loved the conflicts between Fred and Aunt Eshter. Classic stuff!
