Folks who have lived in NYC - where you'd see characters like this every day - are probably more likely to find it entertaining.

I always thought this show sucked. I just don't get how its funny. If I wanted to see neurotic idiots babble, I'd go to a family reunion.

UPDATE: Oh, I guess my brain is somehow not up to snuff for this kind of genius. My bad...

The best. Ever. The writing was brilliant (best I have ever seen), the casting was amazing (especially for the minor characters like Newman, Bania, and J. Peterman), and the acting was great overall. What else do you want?

For the people that give reviews more than "It sucked", I have found that people generally give one of a few responses. Here are my responses to those:

1. "I never got into it." For the most part this means you watched a part of an episode without much thought, never bothering to absorb the ideas and critiques that were being discussed. Yes, a majority of the show is spent discussing trivial issues at the coffee shop or Jerry's apartment, but that does not make it boring except to those that have an ADHD-like need for action. The subtleties to the comedy and characters make the show great.

2. "The characters were unlikeable/detestable/crude/etc." That's the point. Every other sitcom at the time had characters with a ridiculous lack of flaws, and Seinfeld went the opposite way. It showed people that had taken their obsessions and neuroses a little too far, and that is what drove the show. The need for likeable characters shows how viewers had been trained to seek out these types in their shows, creating the mass followings for much worse shows like Friends.

3. "It just wasn't funny." Seinfeld did have a very specific sense of humor, one that lent itself to the educated and well-informed. Many jokes were made using foreign political figures or significant issues of the time. For those lacking this type of knowledge I can see why the show appeared "unfunny". The show was also based upon being clever and quick-witted, different from many shows that relied upon overt punchlines or characters being too stupid to handle even basic social interaction (see: Friends).

I will always hold Seinfeld in the highest of regards. I hope their episodes air on television for many more years and as long as they do I will watch.

One of the all-time greats. I hadn't seen it for a while, so I sat down to watch an episode, and yadda, yadda, yadda... I was hooked again. Being a Marine Biologist, I find it difficult to watch much television when I'm busy removing golf balls from the blowholes of beached whales.

Why is it that whenever I scan through the channels I end up watching two different Seinfeld episodes at the same time?
Great program, about nothing!

sarcastic and petty. Which makes for an excellent sitcom. The episode plots were unforgetable. There was a no strings attached feel to the show. The absence of sappy, touchly-feely setimentality. This creation had absolutely sublime writers.

I used to watch Seinfeld re-runs everyday in college. Oops, am I dating myself? It's one of those shows that are so funny but you don't know why it's funny? The first few episodes were really lame, but then I became addicted. It's kinda like blogging/Tweeting/Internet. Let me explain, it's a show about ordinary people doing nothing. But sometimes doing nothing is hilarious and fascinating.

When Seinfeld was on tv back in the 90s I would watch it with my parents. Now that it is in reruins I do not understand why I liked it so much. Back in the 90s it was a really funny and enjoyable show.

I only seen "Seinfeld" once or twice just to give it a chance. After all, you can't give an honest opinion about something if you don't at least try it. Anyway, "Seinfeld" was truly a show about nothing.

i think that this is one of my favorite situational comidies, i was born in 89' and i am sure that i have seen atleast half of the shows. the thing that i like most about it is that almost everything that happens in everday life can be related to this show. i am not sure how, but it would seem to me atleast, that everyone has friends similar to those that jerry had, as well as some of what haapened in the show. i think that i would name one of my children after cramer, just becuase he was my favorite charector, i cannot explain how much this show effected the world that i grew up in, it always seemed like my parents were watching it when i was a kid, and i have to be brutally honest, it is more than on occasion that i have a seinfeld line slip through my lips at work, i don't know how many times i have said, to my GF, "i was in the pool! i was in the pool!!!" "it wasn't a pick, it was a scratch." i think that this show was one of the best shows ever to have aired, and the best part is when you are telling someone about it that hasn't seen it, and you describe it as the show that is about "nothing" thank you jerry for an amazing job and i will never forget this show.

Not as original as it was claimed to be...same old jokes about sex, sex, sex. If it wasn't based in New York, it wouldn't have lasted more than a season.

Common thread here: People seem to think the characters had to be "likeable". That wasn't the point. The point was that these are representations of our most base, selfish sides and we can alternately laugh with them or at them. Every character is a stroke of genius.

Seinfeld is the absoulute best show ever on television.  Larry David is a genious.  Those of you who say Jerry was a bad actor are wrong.  Jerry made episodes great due to his comebacks and cockiness.  Sure George was too much to handle at times, but that is who he was susposed to be.  Elaine was great.  You can't tell me you don't laugh when she rips Georges' hair hat off.  You also can't tell me you don't laugh at Kramer.  You just can't help it.  I think my favorite is Newman.  Seinfeld's parents are just like my grandparents.  Parts of Seinfeld episodes relate to all parts of life.  Just being in a conversation with somebody, you can always make a Seinfeld reference.  There is so much more to say, I wish I wasn't such a slow typer.

Seinfeld will last through time as a defining sitcom for the 90's, just like All in the Family in the 70's and the Cosby Show in the 80's. It was comedic genius and stood out for doing something very different.

Often very funny but for me the central characters are all too wacko or neurotic and so are ultimately not that likeable, unlike say the lead characters in Cheers of Frasier who you can like despite their shortcomings.George is just a very annoying little man although a lot of the scenes involving him are the funniest.

I've just never bought into the Seinfeld hype. It's not that funny. It's just a show that follows the pointless lives of four dumbasses wandering around New York. I'll admit, Kramer was funny about half of the time. But the other three characters were self-centered idiots.

So far superior to the rest of '90s TV fare that the destruction of all recordings of the other shows would have worth the preservation of this one:

1. Popularized a sort of Beckett-like comedy that would have been unimaginable in a previous decade.

2. Pioneered the art of absurd plotline intersections, which meant the show didn't need to sink or swim on its one-liners.

3. Abandoned the family formula of the traditional sitcom.

The achievement is all the more amazing when you realize that, of the original cast, Seinfeld is a douchebag, Louis-Dreyfus is not funny, Alexander is smarmy, and Richards is a first-class nutjob. It really was the minor characters--the Newmans and J. Petermans--that made this so incredibly funny.

Just what is it about Seinfeld, besides the obvious, common this guy oozes sex appeal. Jason Alexander is the I want to be this guy, but I'am me, short fat, and bald, and I wear glasses, but who cares. Where one dosen't rely on ego, because he dosen't have to, the other relys on ego, because he has to. Then we have the extremely unloveable Cosmo, he is such a mess, but a very good mess. I mean who could think of taking ketchup and a bunch of other condiments in the shower with him, what was he doing? I don't know, then there is the other guy who reminds me of hell on wheels, his whole personality is to personify who, who the hell lives there? Then there is Julia Lewis Dreyfus, her okay, lets get out the deck of cards mentality and play poker, even when she has the deck going against her, she still manages to pull out a couple of aces. I think she is hot stuff. I love how she is always compeled to think of little inuendos to discuss her still interest in Seinfeld. The other chicks are gorgeous, but they kind of have that who will be the next chick after me? or pardon the sey of the experienced woman who isn't into lets get serious with no presumptions on her behalf. Larry David knock your self out.

Whether one love or hates "Seinfeld", this series was clearly one of the definitive shows of the 90's. I personally watched this "show about nothing" from the beginning and remember eagerly awaiting its start after seeing the promos. The first half of its run was clearly the best, as the plotlines didn't center so much around George (Jason Alexander) and Kramer (Michael Richards) wasn't so over the top. Also, I liked the original concept of injecting clips of Seinfeld's stand-up routine to show how real-life events inspired his comedy. Nevertheless, the show remained better than most of the competition during it's second half until the horrid and extremely disappointing finale. The bottom line is that "Seinfeld" serves as a quality common viewing experience for many Americans, as evidenced by so many terms and phrases that are now part of the popular lexicon (e.g. "not that there's anything wrong with that" and "sponge worthy").
