Not my cup of tea. The "comedic genius" of Gabe Kaplan was always lost on me, and I always thought the "students" more annoying than amusing. It certainly wasn't like any high school I ever attended. Where were the fist fights? The booze, the drugs? The stupid, mindless vandalism? Teenage pregnancies? A half dozen kids committed suicide while I was in high school. Showing such sad realities might not have made for a funnier show, granted, but at least it would have been interesting, and maybe it would have even been able to impart a worthwhile "message", sort of like a Brooklyn-version of M*A*S*H, only set in a high school instead of a field hospital. As it was, "Welcome Back Kotter" was both dull and humorless. And the theme song was migraine-inducing.

Enjoyed the first two seasons. Very low budget show. Gabe Kaplan was never funny. The show was pretty good in spite of him.

If I could find reruns, I would probably watch once in awhile. Another show that I really didn't get to see enough of. What i remember of it was good.
VirileVagabond 10/22/2006
Notwithstanding the popularity of the series and its theme song, "Welcome Back, Kotter" just doesn't measure up against most of the better television shows on this list. The humor was sophomoric and somewhat slapstick, the acting stiff and forced, and the plots repetitive and unimaginative. Watching the show now with more mature eyes, the screenwriter's edits of "[insert laugh here]" seem to jump right off the screen.

This was one of the first shows that came out in the mid to late 70's that featured loud overracting that appealed to 12 year olds. Most of them were on ABC.
X Factor Z 03/17/2006
Ah c'mon, especially when Travolta was on this show it was absolutely fun to watch, even the annoying Horshack was entertaining and Kotter's wife was such a hottie!!!
Cosmo Renfro 01/05/2006
Welcome Back Kotter is a classic in it's own right. Diverse and hysterical characters make for good entertainment. If you really want a good laugh watch this show-there's a reason the show is so memorable.

Like happy days, nausiating plots, clickish fans of the show constantly doing their pathetic imitations of the equally irrating horshak or say hey mr kotter like washington character.Kotters lame stories from some stupid relative, untalented, cartoon Vinnie Barberino. They may as well had Don Rickles as Mr Kotter, calling Horshak A hockey puck and turn on the laugh sign for the studio audience and hope the mindless audience think its funny. Only two things good from this;Juan Ebsteins Excuse notes and the theme song.

A dumb show, though I liked the principal Mr. Woodman, and it was kind of harmless: corny fun. Basically ripped off The Marx brothers: Kotter was the Groucho character, and Horshack and Epstein closely resembled and acted like Harpo and Chico.
kattwoman 09/24/2005
this was a cool show. john travolta was so cute. they all were funny except kotters wife. the way horshack laughed was just hilarious and all epsteins notes cracked you up.
unclejack 07/13/2005
Little Cheesy, but very funny! I love it!!

Really dumb, but I would like to watch it just to see the clothes and hairstyles. Remember the WBK lunchboxes?

#4 alltime with me Love this show want i on DVD. The theme song give me a Nostagic Rush. Horshck, Epstein Boom Boom washington and of course the legendary vinny Bobarino...Classic If You have EPs will pay cash for them
scarletfeather 06/19/2004
Gotta agree with Louie, the timeless theme song is much more memorable than the actual TV show. We tease him a lot/Cause we got him on the spot/Welcome back. What a great song.
louiethe20th 06/19/2004
The song at the beginning was better than the show.
cheech 11/04/2003
I liked it. Mr. Kotter was a little strange but it was a pretty good show.
mllelarisa 11/02/2003
Super fun, super cheesy but always a laugh!

Complete trash,does not hold.
RebelYell1861 05/11/2003
It can be funny.

During its original run, I didn't watch this show that much. I've caught it a time or two lately on cable, and it's a pretty good show. I find the Sweathogs waaaaay funnier than Gabe Kaplan, and they are better actors too.
sherryballard1 990 04/28/2003
You can learn much from this series if you watch carefully, and listen with an open mind-and then it's topped off with a joke! The Welcome Back Kotter theme song of this show will touch your heart like old high school pictures.
Moosekarloff 04/28/2003
Idiotic road apples. A cast of no-talents trying to get through a script ostensibly written by a professional. You could hardly tell. I saw a videotape of this show not long ago and I was embarassed for everyone involved, even the grips, script girl, caterer, set dressers, etc.
Fredwah 12/14/2002
"oh-oh-oh Mr. Kotter" I pretty good sitcaom with an original premise.
SoSingular 11/06/2002
It might have been good if the cast had stayed together.
nikkiautry 10/25/2002
This show was funny. And one reason to watch it....John Travolta!!!
Lizabeth 06/24/2002
Good theme song, bad show.
LoneUSFullHous eFan 04/10/2002
It is your classic high school sit com. We all knew someone in high school that was like all of the main characters. Barbarino, the slcker; Horshack, the dork; Washington, the hep cat; Epsteen; the rebel; and Mr. Kotter, the one crazy teacher that we all had at some point in our lives.
ClassicTVFan47 12/26/2001
A happy-go-lucky high school sitcom from the later half of 1970s, this one always is funny. Most of the jokes were harmless (as in not offensive or perverted, like most jokes seem to be nowadays!) and the humor was just goofy! Great acting combined with excellent writing.
callmetootie 04/09/2001
Welcome Back Kotter had an extremly messy run. I liked some episodes, while others just totally bored me to death. I think that the first few season were really, really boring, but once you got used to the guys, you started to enjoy some of the episodes. The characters were extremly annoying, but you got to like them after a while, because they were controllable. I think that it was a bad place for John to start his career, but that's just my opionion.
starlet 04/09/2001
Another mindless comedy from the network that brought you Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley and Mork and Mindy. Twentysomethings playing teenage remedial students in a New York high school. Avoid it at all costs. Should have been called "Idiots R Us."
KRAMNOR 03/19/2001
GOOD SCHOOL COMEDY. GABE MAKES IT WORK!
sweetqmrp 11/26/2000
An overlooked gem of a comedy.
john430et 12/01/1999
John Travolta in tight jeans, before he sold his soul to the Scientologists, was cool.
Munson 11/30/1999
My sister called me last night to let me know that it was on Nickelodeon (Nick at Nite) and it is still just as funny as it was then. So many of the characters and lines from the show have become a part of Americana. And if you don't agree, UP YOUR NOSE WITH A RUBBER HOSE!!!
der6805du 11/30/1999
A classic! Still funny after all these years!
