One of the best comedies of the era. Great funny cast, good writing and outrageous happenings. Definitely low budget sets. All the money was spent on the writing and actors.

In the beginning the show was a platform for riffing on ethnic stereotypes in a way that was refreshing and funny. What if the Polish guy really was kinda dense? The hispanic character was hot headed, the old guy had to got o the bathroom three times per episode, the black guy was a flamboyant dandy. After 25 years of television ignoring the subject of race, the show indulged it with great comic effect. As the show wore on the characters became more fleshed out and the original concept was watered down. Elements of drama began to weigh on the scripts but they folded up before it became like MASH or All in the Family, a sad reminder of what the show once was.

I loved it. Comedy and law enforcement went hand in hand so well in this program.

Much funnier in retrospect -- a little polishing of the writing at the time could've put this in the elite league. Established the multi-ethnic format for a number of subsequent comedies

For the uninitiated, the concept for "Barney Miller" was an eccentric cast of New York City police detectives led by Capt. Barney Miller (Hal Linden). The show had great writing, incorporated cerebral humor, and survived various cast changes, most notably due to the death of Jack Soo (Det. Nick Yemana). Those looking for slapstick type comedy will probably not like this show. The theme song is great as well. As other reviewers noted, Yemana's coffee and Fish's (Abe Vigoda) bathroom jokes got tired, but Wojo's (Max Gail) bumbling, Dietrich's (Steve Landesberg) intellectual ramblings, and Luger's (James Gregory) tales of yore really added character and spice to the dialogue. "Barney Miller" was originally broadcast from 1975 to 1982.

What a great show. The situations and timing of the jokes were great. Fish was too much. Not a big fan of Hal Linden though.

Witty, often uproariously funny. Good cast and great scripts. Started to fade in the later seasons, and they made the right decision to shut it down.

The acting and the writing were great. What a terrific cast of characters! The stories always were amusing, even though the action rarely left the police station. Barney was a great straight man to his crew, and there wasn't an unfunny one in the bunch.

For its time, one of the strongest shows in terms of interesting characters. In a later season they added some bad ass supervisor who was totally one dimensional and truly took away from the flavor of real people. That was near the last season I think.

One of the coolest theme songs of any sit-com. That opening bass line is undeniable. You know Barney Miller is coming on when you hear it.

This is one of my favorite shows. The first season of Barney Miller was kinda of on the dull side, but after the 2nd season, it became brillant. With a fantastic cast of characters, great story lines. The show is still very funny today, even though the last episode was over twenty years ago.

Long before the rash of "dramadies" and the ensemble feel of the 90's sit-coms, "Barney Miller" pioneered ensemble work where no one actor (including Hal Linden)stood out as a "star". The characters were human and grew with the show, with just enough quirks--Harris's novel, Wojo's thickness, Lueger's stories--to keep the tales interesting.

One of the best sitcoms ever produced in the history of American television. It had fine characters, fine stories, fine interaction between the characters and fine humor. It didn't rely on sight gags. It was considered to be realistic, although I've heard that the producers didn't set out to do a realistic TV show. And it respected the intelligence of the viewers. I've heard that Barney Miller has been shown on TV Land and I hope that more people--especially the ones who produce TV shows for the broadcast, cable and other networks--will discover Barney Miller and be influenced by it. It's a classic show worth watching!

A classic cop sitcom that aired from 75 to 82. It featured amusing cops dealing with a bunch of goofy and eccentric law-violators. Slapstick was there in small doses, but the main source of humor was crazy dialogue. Highly recommended and axed before its time because of a stubborn ABC.

A totally boring sitcom. I just don't like watching this show, it's totally dull and boring. It never even tries. The scripts were lousy, the directing was terrible, and the cast was very unstable. That's one thing I noticed over the years on this sitcom, was that the actors were very old and unstable.

I LOVE Barney Miller! I am so glad that TV Land is now airing it. I hadn't seen it in years until now. Those actors did a great job portraying their characters! Yemana and Fish were my favorites. I remember when Jack Soo passed away. I really liked the tribute episode to him. Like I said. I'm glad to see Barney again!

I enjoyed this show, but missed quite a lot, it would be nice if they could join the new DVD revolution, but I can not see it somehow. the relation between the detectives was so good that I felt my attention arrested everytime I watched the show. Brian Walton

Hal Linden was the king as the sage-like Miller. He also had a great supporting cast including the very funny Steve Landesburg.

I may have been too young to understand the show when it was on prime time, but the reruns still do not seem funny to me - maybe they are too dated as of now. Fish ruled - I loved his spin-off show, that was more my speed/ Long live Abe Vagota!
