Before there was Andy Sipowicz, there was Norman Buntz on Hill Street Blues. Still, all due credit to Dennis Frantz--great character actor.

NYPD Blue was an extraordinary show that really sparked alot of debate over it's use of language and nudity on television. In my opinion, it set new standards and opened the door for alot of shows to follow. It is one of the best all-time police dramas to have graced our television screens. I, for one, truly miss the show and all the great characters depicted on it.

If you are like me, and want to see the entire 12 seasons, on DVD, please sign a petition I found at:

http://www.petitiononline.com/mod_perl/signed.cgi?nypdblue&1

I am truly frustrated that I have four seasons of this show on DVD, and FOX has no plans of distributing any future seasons, according to their reply of my email inquiry.

Dennis Franz is a GREAT actor. But how come everybody knows and likes his Andy Sipowicz character and didn't know or give a sh*t about his Norm Buntz character on Hill Street Blues? Basically the same guy...guess it must be the "If it's about NYC, it's GOT to be good" factor...

The 5 second nudity was really unneccessary. The show was well written with interesting characters like Sipowitz. There was no reason to see brief snipits of nudity at the end of the episodes.

This was the best drama on tv in its day. Amazing how the quality didnt change when Smits came aboard, then Rick Schroeder. I think it came to a dignified end. Sipowicz character one of the best in television history.

I was not a big cop show watcher until I happened to be channel surfing and stopped a few minutes to check out NYPD Blue. I was hooked from that moment. I enjoy watching the show, and often find myself clearing my schedule to just watch the show. Dennis Franz and Rick Schroeder, now Mark Paul Gosseler are very talented actors in my opinion. I will continue to watch the show and encourage others to check it out also.

Probably one of if not the best cop show ever seen on TV. Even with all the cast changes over the years the show has remained fresh and entralling. The shows writers are great unfortunatly the show will begin its last season this fall.

Just as the horribly-overrated All in the Family led to the decline of sitcoms, the completely useless NYPD Blue has led to the decline of the primetime mystery shows. Unlike Murder She Wrote or Matlock, this show has evil cops and all kinds of stupid, headache-inducing angst. It also introduced yet another profanity into primetime as well as rear male nudity. The violence is also extreme, and really goes to show what few limits broadcast television actually has left on it. Add to that, terrible acting and awful writing and you have yourself a completely awful show.

The most superbly written shoow on television. Even with some of the frequent character changes (I miss Bobby) it stays on top in my book. The emotions it evokes is over the top. Its a very thought-provoking show. Will think about episodes for days. Dennis Franz is such a talented actor. Actually I can't think of one person on the show that isn't talented to the max.

Dennis Franz is an overrated actor. He plays a grizzled Chicago cop on Hill Street Blues, now he plays a grizzled Chicago cop working in NYC on NYPD Blue. What a stretch, Master Thespian!

It's had its moments, but its best days are behind it. Dennis Franz, whom I never liked in his earlier work for Bochco, took some getting used to for me (for one thing, he's a New York cop with a pronounced Chicago accent -- what's up with that?) but he's now the sturdy foundation on which the show sits. The rest of the cast is shifting sand, but there are some welcome new faces (particularly Jacqueline Obradors, who should be given more to do.)

I have been watching this show since its beginning. I really, really love Dennis Franz. He so capably portrays a native New Yorker, and his character remains true to himself. The character Sipowicz demonstrates some remarkable feelings and is an excellent detective, too!

I am a die-hard NYPD Blue fan all the way. I just wish they didn't have to do so many scenes of the naked dead women. I understand that rape is a crime that NYPD deal with, as well as murder, but I don't think it is necessary to show the body more than once, and only for a few seconds. Unlike others, though, I'm not going anywhere just because I don't agree with the cinematography! Excellent show.

NYPD Blue has lost two fans. My husband and I have enjoyed it weekly but will not watch anymore. Suddenly, NYPD Blue writers insist upon adding a dead, naked, raped woman, with a perfect body of course, to each episode, and panning in on her several times for effect. I find this blatant attempt at titillation of viewers disgusting. Sexual violence towards women is real and rampant. NYPD Blues exploitation of that fact to sell TV is terribly disappointing and sick. What a loss of a great show. Susan Quigley

THE RATING SYSTEM YOU HAVE DOESNT DO NYPD BLUE JUSTICE ITS BETTER THAN A 5 GREAT. ITS A SHOW THAT DEALS WITH ADVERSITIES, ISSUES WITHIN THE DEPARTMENT AND MANY PROS/CONS OF SOCIETY TODAY. IT SHOW HOW TO BRING UP SENSITIVE ISSUES AND DEAL WITH THEM OPENLY HELPING VIEWERS THAT DONT AND CANT SEE THEM UNTIL THEY ARE FACE TO FACE WITH THEM. CONGRADULATIONS I JUST LOVE OT WATCH THIS SHOW. ONLY DISLIKE I HAVE IS RICK SCHRODER HE JUST DOESNT HAVE WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A NYPD BLUE INDIVIDUAL.

I like this show a lot. I think it has a good plot and can keep you watching. What bugs me is that they sometimes have the same type of plots, and it gets boring. It's always the same type of crimes over and over. If they were to mix it up, and find more interesting things to put in it, it would be better.

Give up the ghost already. What a show this was the first year. Then Jimmy Smits came in and it was just as good, maybe even better. Then Rick Schroeder came in and it was still compelling. Then the kid from "Saved By The Bell" came in... Come on. Show mercy. Pull the plug and stop poor Sipowicz's suffering. I mean, this guy is becoming a one man pariah, everyone he cares about dies... Except Medavoy... =o)

I am getting a bit tired of Sorenson's angst and Sipowitz' mishandling of his private life-bring on more of Esai Morales and MCDowell and "D"-savvy characters, and we need more crime solving here, not too much of the private lives.

The very worst episode of NYPD Blue is far better than the very best episode of any other television program.Blue is my one and only "can't miss" series. Dennis Franz is an amazingly talented, gifted performer, and most of the ensemble cast is magnificent. Crap seems to be the favored programming for all the networks, but NYPD Blue is the silk purse made out of a sow's ear.

I would rate it a 5 but I'm getting tired of Dennis Franz. I never really liked his down in the mouth attitude but the rest of the cast and the story line carried him. His double negatives and his mispronunciation of the word "prostate" does not represent what detectives are really like.It is Amazing to me how such an unappealing character can be so successful, especially in romantic situations. I guess we're stuck with him but I wish he would stop showing his tongue so much.

Wow, I can't believe LT. Fancy is leaving the show! His character's integrity, smarts, ethics and leadership helped to balance the show's other characters. I think the new boss will put some spice and vigor into the show. I'm glad the writers are bringing the NYPD into the 21 century by adding laudble minority and non traditional characters with depth!LT FANCY WILL BE MISSED BY ALL who are progressive, open minded and dynamic!

Tell me who would be afraid of a Rickie Schroeder? He doesn't pack the horsepower of Kelly or Simmone. Kelly and Simmone gave credibility to the job, Schroeder is a wimp. The ever suffering, guilt ridden brother makes me puke. The love aspect with Kim Delaney, give me a break, Schroeder looks more like a bed wetter than he lover. Delaney reminds me of David Jansen, one facial expression for all evens...she stinks. And keep Fancy, he gives the show stability. Bring back Kelly, even as a private eye.

I used to be a huge fan of NYPD and it would seem odd to miss it. However, the strength of acting has deteriorated with the script being very coded and at time nonsensical. Diane has lost her looks and become embittered. The whole show is now reliant on the excellent Dennis Franz. It needs more than that to stand out. Perhaps it has overstayed its time.

I agree with the bulk of the posts here, that the show direction has changed, and putting Diane (Kim Delaney) with Danny (R. Schroeder) was the BIGGEST mistake in NYPD History. Please...not only Bobby's replacement, but was it necessary? And to achieve what end? Lazy writing? YES.

We were glad to see it back on the air too. We've watched for several years and love the action and drama and even the 'relationships', but I think sometimes it goes TOOOO far. The show is generally TV14, so it should be appropriate for my teenager. But this past week's show would have been off limits and he would have been disappointed having to miss it. The nudity was not necessary.

Beautifuul scripted, compellingly acted. It stands alone in its quality. Others dont even attempt to accomplish what they do, every week as a matter of course. The bad news is that while the male casting is strong, the female central casting is unbearably weak and clearly reflects blatant tokenism. Worse, they diminish the roles of the few girls that are good! Do they really think we didnt notice that Thompson was a far better actress??! Rick Schroder is a fine actor who shouldn't be working with a generic actress like Delaney! Needless to say the 1/9/01 show was an embarassment! Why does Diane have to be intangeled with all the hot cops. Someone had made the cruel suggestion that , thinly veiled, that's the only reason she's there to begin with!! Can anyone seriosly argue that point? Worse, now it seems she's 'third wheeling" it on all of Sip and Sorensons' cases. Argh!!!! KIRKENDAL COME BACK!!!!! Lets see ...now if Jill has an affair w/Martens..hmm....

I've been waiting since May to see new episodes and I'm sorry to say I was disappointed. The crime story lines were right on the usual target, but are the writers so unimaginative that they had to put Diane and Danny together? Give me a break! Diane should have a little more sense than to get involved with Bobby's replacement. I'd rather see her hook up with Sipowitz; now that would be interesting. Really, can't she find a date outside of the office?? If they writers can't do better than this, I might get more sleep this season because I won't have to stay up for the show.

I think this show is great. One of the best dramas on tv. Dennis Franz is fantastic, as always. And I am very impressed with Rick Schroder's work. Yes, there were a lot of personal stories last season, but that's to be expected with the changing cast. You need personal history to get acquainted with new characters and to say goodbye to departing characters. I'm sure there will be a lot of personal stories this year, as well. They still need to reveal Danny's past and the reason for his nightmares. I don't mind. You need the personal stuff to care about the characters. Although, I think they need to try to balance the personal stuff, with more exciting cases, a little better than they did last year. There is a new head writer, so maybe the fresh blood can accomplish that. The buzz I've been hearing about the new season is very positive, so far. I can't wait to see the season premiere in a couple of weeks.

Your writers are doing a terrible job. The viewers do not want to share the detectives personal problems every episode. How about good stories like the Naked City had a few years ago? Enough of the bare asses, and the love themes. All your detectives need therepy. Your show didn't even make it in 72 listings in the Florida paper for the ratings last week.
