This video has thrived on its reputation of being the first one shown on MTV but it really is nothing more than a poor quality cartoon.

The video isn't bad, but the song is.

One of the first songs and music videos to outright make fun of gay people. I thought the song was boring to begin with, and the video wasn't really much to watch either...

Great Video, The cheezy 80's animation just made it shine even more... Wasn't it a company named Zoetrope who was responsible for the animation??? Seem to remember that name.

When videos were still new--and MTV still played them--this was one of the groundbreakers (along with "Take on Me" and "Sledgehamer" among others). In addition to the fun graphics, the tune was memorable and the lyrics fun and timely.

The thing about "Money for Nothing" is that it's still nice in even these days. It was revolutionary for 1985, it's still good today.

This is probably one of the definitive 80's videos! It was very experimental (with the blocky, linear graphics and then the neon scribbles imposed on the video of the band performing), they did a lot of neat new things. In a way, it's kind of a preview to a future video that I found to be successful as well ("Californication" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers took the video-game graphic idea and modernized it). It was very fun to watch.

This was a classic 80's video. The computer graphics were a nice touch, and the video's story was a lot of fun. It didn't try to attach an Oscar performance to the song, but just lent a nice visual dimension to it. The song and video work great together.

It's still a great video. Great animation (specially of Mark and his band)

This video was made in 1985. I watch it today, 16 years later, and I am amazed at how they were able to get such accurate computer graphics even then. And even further amazed at how they were able to mix the graphics and the actual footage of the band.

It combines two of my favorite things: Dire Straits and cheesy eighties computer animation!

Dire Straits made this awesome song about MTV. The sound is great. The video was well made. Kind of rare, cartoon type video. I love this song and video.

Landmark video. First video with computer animation. The best part of the video, however, is the footage of the band playing this catchy #1. The way each band member is surrounded by the colored outlines, it adds all the more intensity and absolute energy the song and the band have. When Mark Knopfler plucks that all too familiar riff, there is not a single better moment in the history of video

Possibly the only Dire Straits song I don't like.
