Faith and Courage (Sinead O'Connor) 5

It may be a little premature to declare a record a classic after less than ten years. Then again, there are times when such a thing may be entirely fitting and appropriate. With Faith And Courage it is more than that: it is required.

This is Sinead at the apex of her artistic power. Her releases since have been exciting and worthwhile in their own right; Throw Down Your Arms for its reach, and Theology for its integrity, but pop is Sinead O'Connor's true medium. Faith And Courage is pop, and with this wanting pencil she has drawn a life's experience into a collection of songs that each reveal a facet of her wakeful heart. It rejects or abandons none of her early anger and anguish, nor does it compromise her unique perspective. It embraces it all in a new maturity and vitality, and turns her tumultuous, sometimes harrowing personal history into music that won't leave you alone.

What comes of her personal journey is a depth, and an acute feeling for what it means to be human that most other recording artists just don't have access to. Faith And Courage is a work of lasting beauty. The glimpses it offers of this artist's inner life demand to be believed. There is no other choice.

Bob Dylan sang to your lizard brain, and Mick Jagger to your crotch. Sinead sings to your Irish soul, and I for one am richer for it.

This album is an interesting mix of emotions, artistic biography and exploration. Sinead returns to her Irish roots and develops an interesting atmosphere in the song "The Lamb's Book of Life". In this song she explores themes of migration, national division and disenfranchisement present in Irish society. The track "Emma's song" takes on an altogether different tone, beginning with the soft tinkling of piano keys culminating in a beautiful medley of pipes and strings. Some other tracks are "hate-them-or-love-them tracks" such as "Daddy I'm Fine" (I love it), while others are rather uneventful (i.e. "Dancing Lessons"). Overall, the album was thoughtful and fluid.

Top Track: Emma's Song

wow, what's amazing album!!! I bet that she expressed her music talent for all of us. I do like the song "Kyrie Eleison" on this album. That's one of the songs that possibly could make me crying. Besides that, Emma's Song is another my favorite song of Sinead's.

I am SO behind the times! I'm not sure why I purchased this CD so many years ago, but I have just recently begun to listen.

I LOVE IT!

I hear other artists... Chantal Kreviazuk, oddly enough, and Heather Nova.

Oh, but this is SO much better!! EVERY song is kick a*#!. Whether Sinead is showing her skills as a balladeer or a rocker, there are simply NO missteps!

How weird is it that his this CD is eight years old and I'm just now understanding its power? Doesn't really matter. I've loved Sinead O'Connor from the start. These songs solidify Sinead as a wonderfully expressive artist with an unparalleled voice.

Sinead O' Connor has what not many singers have: Vocal Range. She also has plenty of talent. She writes her own songs and composes her own music. Her voice is purely melodic and beautiful. Her songs have so much meaning. Sinead O'Connor is a true genius. Coming all the way over from Ireland and making success in America is impressive as well. She definetly deserves more respect than she's ever gotten. Sinead O' Connor is a true musician.

Sinead is so much more than a singer! She is a poet, an activist, a warrior, and a true musical artist. Her voice is perfect, her harmonys are fresh and powerful, and her range is a gift from God. Her music inspires and comforts me and I would recommend it to anybody that is seeking music that has the power to make you think and feel, and not just dance ("It's gettin' hot in Heeere..."). I think it's sad that she got such a bad rap due to her demonstration against the hypocrisy of the pope on SNL. She is one of the top 5 female singers in the world and should get more credit, IMHO.

I think that this album was a picture of folk and modern rock. Again Sinead has blown me away with her great performances. She sings like and angel.

Strong independent pagan woman, SINGING. what more could you ask for. Makes me want to start a religion, burn a flag, and just generally kick some apathetic ass.

The only album I gave 5 stars in the last year was David Gray’s “White Ladder”. But this one is pretty close. I love the songwriting and melodies, and Sineads music runs deep!

This is one of the most spiritually awakening piece of art I have seen thus far. She taps into the origins of her anger rather then just expressing it.
