This is a great album. Hands down one of the best things Eric Clapton has ever done. Each track is classic blues Rock at its best. Duane Allman is really great too.

It's hard to weigh in with a fresh view point on the album except to say that it seems to be the album where Clapton really lays it all bare. There are no exercises in style like Lay Down Sally or I Shot the Sherriff, no intentionally catchy pop numbers like Rock and Roll Heart or Promises, just real raw blues and guitar rock. It even has a more immediate and raw sound mix. It is a classic and stands out even among Clapton's excellent 70's albums. While the Duane Allman contributions elevate Clapton's work, due credit is owed to the great singer/keyboardist Bobby Whitlock, long time Clapton bassist/associate Carl Radle and the tragic/crazy Jim Gordon.

Excellent work throughout. Besides the anthemic title track, there are a host of other magnificent pieces.

Pay particular attention to the stellar version of "Little Wing"

Truly awesome effort. Perhaps the best-played rock record of all time. Strong songs ("Why Does Love Have To Be So Sad," "Layla," "Bell Bottom Blues") and very tasteful production. "Little Wing" is just totally, f**king staggering, about the highest, most blissful rock anthem imaginable, a rare instance where a Hendrix cover was superior to the original. And still sounds great after all these years, not dated at all.

Not my favorite band, although one of them...Eric and Duane are 2 of my favorite guitarists, but there are some I like more. The band itself was more of an indulgence for Eric and Duane and Co. , just an opportunity to get together and have a meeting of the minds. I say all that to say this: Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs is the finest rock and roll album ever recorded. It is, in its own way,a masterpiece. 'Layla' is a definite classic rock love song. Take Layla off the album and this would STILL be the greatest record ever made. It doesnt feel right to me to hear Layla without first having heard 'Have You Ever Loved a Woman, Little Wing and It's Too Late strung back to back,(not the only way to hear them, but the BEST way)! LAYLA is just like a dessert that you have just enough room for. The Little Wing arrangement, apples to oranges with Hendrixs' original, is a mind-blowing eargasm that may take several hundred listenings for you to reach the realization that, if all you had to wake up for tomorrow morning was an opportunity to listen to it, you would get to bed early. In the realm of album-oriented rock, its not about singles, its about music. And musically, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs is AS GOOD AS IT GETS!!!

Best classic rock album of all time. Duane Allman and Eric Clapton on wailing away the whole album. Its incredible. Key to the Highway, Little Wing, Layla. Such an underrated album on this list. My favorite ever, needs to be top 10 ever. It is on VH1 and Rolling Stones lists. Too bad that Allman died on the way home from recording this album. If you can, pick up the box set of this album. 3 CD's: the album, a disc of outakes, and a disk of all instrumental jams called THE JAMS. 5 20+ minute songs where Duane and Eric Clapton just go off. The last two jams are with the whole Derik and the Dominoes as well as all of the Allman Bros. Pick it up. Also check out Duane Allman Anthology. There are some traks on it like "Mean Old World" which is a slide guitar duet with Clapton and Duane from the Layla sessions!! I LOVE THIS ALBUM

A lot of hits on here. "Keep on Rolling," "Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad," and of course "Layla" are good examples of the passionate, energetic sound that along with the blues, is the album's signature sound. The band plays well, although I'd like to hear more of Whitlock's piano and organ. I didn't recognize any of the "dominoes" names (besides Duane Allman), before buying this, but I imagine they were credible musicians to be playing with such masters as Clapton and Allman. There are some blues numbers that I'd consider throwaways, though "Key to the Highway" is pretty awesome, with some great guitar runs. The cover of Hendrix's "Little Wing" is good. Clapton doesn't always sing out, but when he does it often seems too high and he ends up screeching. So for a few of these reasons, I might consider subtracting a star from the album's rating, but since it's currently has the underappreciated place of #91 on this list, I'll give it a five in hopes to bring this to a better place on the list. And thanks Wiggum- I'll check out that live cd.

Derek and the Dominos, in my opinion, is one of the top five bands of the 70s. "Layla & Other Assorted Love Songs" is an unquestionable classic that somehow manages to capture the intensity created by Clapton's drug use and completely screwed up love life at the time (he was in love with his best friend George Harrison's wife). The song “Layla” itself is one of the most powerful pop songs I’ve ever heard, and “Bell Bottom Blues” is still one of my favorites. If you’re already a fan of this music, don’t miss the live Derek & the Dominos double-CD – “Live at the Fillmore.”

Get four stars. Although Layla is truly one of the all-time best rock songs ever recorded the rest of the album doesn't quite come up to that mark. Still very good though.
