While the album had a much broader musical pallatte than most of the punk that preceeded it, it still respected the raw DIY aesthetic of the movement and demonstrated that punk could be heard beyond the rundown dives of London and New York. Includes a handful of the Clash's most enduring songs, Train in Vain, London Calling, Rudy Can't Fail, Wrong 'em Boyo, Clampdown, Brand New Cadilac, Guns of Brixton.......

Such an iconic album for so long it's probably a tiny bit overrated. . .but you have to rank this album high on this list. . .

IMO The Clash arent as good as their reputation suggests but they're still a million times better than the self indulgent bombastic sh*te they were kicking against i.e. disco, prog and stadium rock/AOR. They made several middling records and one very good one i.e. this. The first half is very strong but the second half peters out owards the end.

This is really the only good Clash album, but also one of the best of the '70s. Both the words and guitar are smart. When the Clash drifted into other genres, both the music and the lyrics started to rot. They had their best years when they were more or less a wannabe Ramones, and when they started to embrace their stardom, it was no longer interesting. Blondie was better at doing the quasi-reggae thing, anyway.

In the top five albums of all time, no doubt a classic. It is funny that magazines like Rolling Stone called it the album of the 80's even though it was released in 1979. Anyway, its a great album that showcases the bands ability to play any type of music that they wanted to.

Dude..its the clash. What more is there to say?

Raging, apocalyptic terror. Great stuff. One of the best albums ever.

No other band took punk/new wave as far, with as much style as these guys. London Calling is one of the top five albums of all time, hands down. Social commentary without being in your face, punky but still accessable. Just tight enough to be amazing but just sloppy enough to be cool. Still amazes me that bands like Rancid and Green Day even bothered. This is the one that counts.

Excellent album. Very diverse in the styles of music...not just punk.
hotel283 06/28/2004
Sorry, totally overrated band with little talent.
macpuppy 05/07/2004
Best album of the 80's - no question about it. Original, diverse, powerful.
kolby1973 11/26/2003
An excellent album that could never get old no matter what. I love the Clash, always have, always will. They make the Beatles look like absolutely nothing when it comes to good music....the Clash is true, great British music....

How can you beat an album like 'London Calling'? How can you beat a band like The Clash? In my opinion, you absolutely cannot. Songs like 'London Calling', 'Spanish Bombs', 'The Right Profile', 'Train In Vain', 'Rudie Can't Fail', 'The Guns Of Brixton', and 'Clampdown' make this magnificent gem a total classic and something all generations can listen to, relate to and without a doubt enjoy! Their earlier masterworks like 'The Clash' (1977) were added to with the production of this album. Listen to ANY of their music if you haven't, and definitely get 'London Calling' if you don't have it already. The Clash always and forever!

Spanish Bombs, London Calling, Train In Vain, Rudie Can't Fail, Spanish Bombs, The Guns Of Brixton, Death Or Glory, Clampdown, Lost In The Supermarket & my personal favorite The Right Profile. Excellent double-album(who, at the time would have thought any punk band capable of serving up enough material for two records at once?) following the classic releases of The Clash & Give 'Em Enough Rope(if you don't have it, shame on you!). We lost much when Joe Strummer left this world. One question remains...why does Rolling Stone continuously list London Calling as the best album of the 1980's? It was released in 1979...or do they mean it doesn't count until it's US release.

Rest In Peace Joe Stummer (lead singer) he died at the age of 50 from a heart attack just after Christmas. The Clash were an absolutely fantastic band. Meant to be absolutely brilliant live (my mother saw them in the late 70's and loved it) 'London Calling' is such an anthem, especially to me as I live in London. Its one to sing/shout to. Me and my other half usually sing 'I live by the canal' instead of 'I live by the river' as the band lived in camden, which happens to have a canal running through. I totally agree with Shafty with listening to 'Story of the Clash' and you also get to listen to great songs such as 'Rock The Khyber' Legend of a band.

These guys picked up where the Sex Pistols left off. Plus, they took it one step further. Instead of the nihilistic feel of the previously mentioned band, The Clash were sophisticated with its politically charged lyrics. They also proved that punk was more than just three chords.

The Clash-What a name, what a band, what an album. Its got every type of music from rock to punk, from ska to pop. There is at least one track from 'London Calling'that you will like-whatever music you are into. If you are a music fan this album is essential for your coolection.

London Calling is an excellent album. The title track is awesome along with the cool song "Jimmy Jazz." In Spanish Bombs where they sing in Spanish is so powerful. Wrong 'Em Boyo is also an upbeat, fun song to listen to. Koka Kola, The Card Cheat, they're all unbelievable songs. Believe me, it deserves every bit of recognition it receives. London Calling blends so many different genres of music together to form a distinctive, great album. It surely and truly is one of the best albums composed in the history of music.

The Clash are not only one of the greatest of all punk bands, but one of the greatest of all rock and roll both on and off the stage.I admire The Clash even more for their devotion to their fans, like bringing as many fans without tickets back stage, they were as unique as they were good. It is easy to see why Rolling Stone named this album of the 80's.
detective starsky 05/16/2001
The Clash -- one of the most underrated bands of all time. One would expect that the breadth of style, learned musicainship, and consistent quality on this recording would have sqaushed all of the nay-sayers. In any event, a time piece that moves across genres, and refuses to box itself in. A true masterpiece, and required listening for all. Stereotypes do not apply here.
nbhtc 03/26/2001
One of the greatest albums of all time. From London Calling to Train In Vain there is no song on that album that sucks. In my mind this is in the top 3.
PimpAssMug 01/11/2001
The Clash was one of the greatest bands to bloom into the music mainstream out of the early 80's underground punk scene. London Calling was one of their greatest albums, despite being possibly overproduced and showy. It is a good fusion of roots rock and the reggae that swept through the country with bands like the Police.

Great album. Some interludes of their less than strongest music, but when they launch into their hits, it's no contest!
HFroehlich 11/20/2000
London Calling, the first album the Clash put out in America, was also the best punk album ever. The voice and songs were so diverse, yet one could always detect it was the Clash.
jacknili 10/20/2000
One of the few CDs that you can listen to all the way through without skipping any songs.
magellan 09/25/2000
An amazing album. Definitely up there in terms of all time albums. The first 12 tracks are amazing, and the last seven are damn good. I first got into this album in high school, and now, 12 years later, I still listen to it all the time. I can't think of another album that has stood the test of time so well... I remember buying this song for Train in Vain, and then coming to the pleasant realization that there are a number of lesser known, but superior tracks on this CD. A classic blend of rock, pop, ska, and punk that should be in everyone's collection.
Shafty 09/21/2000
Holy crow! What a band, what an album! There is nothing that one cancompare to the Clash. What the hell are they? Punk? Ska? Pop? Reggae? One thing that I know that they are is one hell of a band. Melodic, rocking, in-your-face musical magicians and a group of guys that bowed out at the right time and refuse to re-unite. This is a post-punk era record. Don't let that word 'punk' scare you away. Sure Joe Strummer sported a Mohawk and the members of the band wore suspenders and combat boots, but the word punk is so intimidating and improper to describe the music of The Clash. Sheer energy and raw emotion is more like it. Start off slow with 'The Story of the Clash' and dig deeper into the archives to find the gems like 'London Calling' to discover a band and a record that is a must-have for anybody who considers themselves a well-rounded music connaisseur.

This one just sucks
Ruby 05/12/2000
Incredibly varied in everything but its quality - which is consistently great. While there's not a single track as great as a couple of their amazing early punk singles like "Complete Control" or "Safe European Home", its gotta be among the very best of the decade.
