For my money REM are hugely overrated to the point that i find many of their albums flaccid and forgettable. Murmur is the exception containing their best stuff - Talk About the Passion, Radio Free Europe, Pilgrimage and West of The Fields.

Murmur is simply a classic. A unique, haunting sound that will never ever be duplicated!! Phenomenal!

You really could not as kany more from a band for their debut album, it comes in strong with those defiant drums at the beginnig of 'Radio Free Europe' and never loses it's magic all the way through. The sound is edgy and gritty which makes it understandable why they were such an exciting band at the time and which still holds true to this day. A classic and no mistake!

When I first listened to this album I was totally amazed by it, because I had never heard anything like it. I couldn't understand anything the singer was saying, though I caught odd phrases like have another/coin a phrase, and the guitar work reminded me vaguely of the Byrds. This album is a work of genius because it is totally unique-nobody has ever made anything remotely like this creation. I still can't tell you what Michael Stipe is singing about on Murmur;all I know is that this album is a work of beauty.

Simply one of the best albums of the Eighties, and one of the best debuts by any band. It reminds us that simpler is better.

Combien de temps? Combien de temps till "A Perfect Circle" gets OUT of the jukebox in my head! I dreamed about that song last night! This album is great. My favorite song is of course A Perfect Circle followed by Talk About the Passion followed by Shaking Through. The song Radio Free Europe had an amazing video. And you know what's utterly amazing? They did this album while they were living in a zillion-year-old run down CHURCH! I'm not kidding, R.E.M was that poor! How many of todays crappy bands could pull off something like Murmur? I think not. I think nought. Get the point? Murmur is GREAT! Medgar Evers, I think you made a mistake by getting "Catapult". TRhat's not a good first-song-to-listen-too. Too much like Queens "Headlong"---fast, feel-good, and overkill. Overall, Murmur is abfab. Take care, everyone!

Hmm. When I read all the reviews, people made it sound like it was an album that took good time to warm to. I downloaded two random tracks ("Catapult" and "Pilgrimage") off of Aimster and thought that it wasn't too "hard" to listen to. If I don't immediately like an album, that's usually a good sign. But I bought the album, listened through once, and it's never seemed too great since. Tunes like "Radio Free Europe" and "Sitting Still" are good, but I can't listen to it too much without getting tired. Maybe I'll test R.E.M. again by buying "Reckoning," "Out of Time" or something.

R.E.M. has been around for so long now and they are just as popular as ever. What makes a good album is when you can listen to the CD all the way through and enjoy each and every song. This album catches you with the first song and then keeps you listening.

One of the three best REM CDs (along with "Automatic for the People" and "Life's Rich Pageant"). I don't understand a word Michael Stipe is singing, but it's great music. This is early REM, when the only airplay they got was on college radio, so don't expect the more mature sound you hear on CDs like "Out of Time."

From the first track to the last, this album has a haunting, hypnotic feel to it. Probably the first album I ever completely fell for.
