Olivia de Havilland was great in Gone with the Wind. It would not have been the same without her. That being said, I don't think the character was too much like Melanie in the book. It seemed to be more like her or her own idea of it.

One of the most talented actresses along with her equally talented sister Joan Fontaine. Both academy award winners.

When I was a young teenager in the early 1960s I had an elderly cousin who had owned a seamtress business in Hollywood from about 1920 until 1947. Late in her career she personally made gowns designed by Edith Head. She came out of retirement to handmake the dress that Olivia de Havilland wore in the movie The Heiress. Olivia won the Academy Award for best actress while Edith Head won the award for costume design. My cousin, Miss Retta, always held Olivia de Havilland in the highest regard. In her opinion she was not only one of the greatest actresses of all times but offstage one of the nicest and classiest people who ever lived.

Olivia de Havilland has given many great performances and deserves her place among the top five greatest actresses. She fully deserved her two Oscars and should have won a third for THE SNAKE PIT ('48). Even her leading lady roles opposite Errol Flynn in classic adventure-romance films that are much admired today, showed that there much was much more to her than just a pretty face. Her major roles usually required her to play down her natural beauty but she was anything but plain (as someone else commented). For proof, take a look at her Lady Marian in THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD or her Arabella Bishop in CAPTAIN BLOOD--or later on, MY COUSIN RACHEL. She was a great beauty as well as a fine actress in a variety of roles. If you want to see her in a great comedy role watch STRAWBERRY BLONDE with Cagney and Hayworth.

As perfect for the part of Melanie in "Gone with the Wind" as Gable and Leigh were as Rhett and Scarlett. Olivia de Havilland was a very good yet possibly somewhat underrated actress of her era. One of her best roles was as the vindictive spinster in the film "The Heiress" (1949) in which she was cast opposite Montgomery Clift. She did an excellent job making the transition from timid but hopeful wallflower to embittered emotionally scared old maid. Other memorable de Havilland films include "The Snake Pit" (1948), "Hush...Hush Sweet Charlotte" (1964), and "Lady in a Cage" (1964). I also like her sister Joan Fontaine and thought she did a wonderful job in the title role of "Jane Eyre".
