Craig Schwartz: There's a tiny door in my office, Maxine. It's a portal and it takes you inside John Malkovich. You see the world through John Malkovich's eyes... and then after about 15 minutes, you're spit out... into a ditch on the side of The New Jersey Turnpike. Maxine: Sounds great!. Who the fuck is John Malkovich?

I did not think I would like this movie and I was right. Totally pointless and why did they pick on John Malkovich who really was not that interesting. If it comes on TV some night give it a look but don't invest any money in it.
The Slacker 12/23/2004
One of the few movies that deserves a five. It is a very enteranining and trippy story without a happy ending(for once) for the main character. Recommended.

Once you go through a single iteration of someone being John Malkovich, the whole concept gets tiresome rather quick. I generally don't like John Cusack movies and this one did nothing to change my assessment [As a side note, I know a person whose daughter deals with VIPs at a ***** hotel. According to her, far and away the most difficult VIP she dealt with was John Cusack]. I slept through major chunks of this boring movie. I found the scene where a frumpy looking Cameron Diaz is tied up and locked in a dog cage somewhat unsettling. As for Malkovich, I don't want to see John Malkovich [as in any of his smarmy pseudo-intellectual flicks], let alone be John Malkovich. As time is money, sitting through it is not worth it, even on Free TV.

. . . not really a comedy at all. A bizarre story about how a odd man finds a portal into the mind of another human being (in this case, for some reason, they chose John Malkovich), and it goes into what he (and other people) chooses to do with this newfound entertainment. An interesting story. Also, on a side note, I found the puppeteering in the movie to be really fascinating (not the story that the puppets portrayed, but the skill in which to make the marionettes show expression). If you like bizarre movies, this one is good for you.

this movie was fun and interesting. The idea was great and strange and a little disturbing. I loved John Cusack in this movie, and John Malkovich, too. I'd recommend this movie to anyone who wants to see something a little different...but satisfying.

If you ever see one movie (which I hope never happens to you) see BJM. It has to be the smartest and funniest movie ever. And the only movie to ever use all the letters from A-O in its title.

Another stupid movie. Avoid.

Funny as hell. A great sophisticated comedy. Actors did a great job and John Malkovich has to be flattered.

cameron diaz took a big chance playing that uglycow and .... nobody noticed! this movie was intriguing and a great surprise but yuck, i hate john malkovich. he is such a pandering self-important *ss. his roles are always too conveniently positioned so he can get his rottenold dick into nice young pssy. what a jerk. cant stand him. lame actor.
Molfan 01/18/2002
This is an original but very strange movie. I thought it would be better. I did not hate it but I did not love it either. John Malkovich at least had the sense of humor to go along with this.I have heard others rave about this movie, it just did not do much for me.

Yuck! This movie sucked so much!!!!! What the hecl was the point of making that THING?!?!?!?! Tasteless and bitter jokes, I didn't laugh once in the movie. Not the best acting and the worst topic I've ever seen a movie about in my whole life! Ugh! I wasted 2 bucks on that piece of ...

This is the most bizzare and confusing movie I've seen in my life. Great story, great acting (by Malkovich and Cusac) and the appearance of Charlie Sheen was terrific. THUMBS UP

at first i wasn't even sure why i liked this movie. it didn't have any moral journey that i could see, except for maybe maxine's. but for such a weird movie it was refreshingly unique and it got my mental wheels spinning. and the characters were so well written - they all had endearing qualities as well as tragic flaws. i thought the lack of an explanation for the portal would deter my opinion, but it didn't. it was a fun and imaginitve ride without being too dark or too cheesey. it did seem to give a sympathy-provoking light to same-sex intimacy, though. but then, the only scene that never fails to make me laugh is when that fan approaches malkovich and ironically says how much he appreciates "retards being portrayed so compassionately on the big screen".
Redstorm 02/07/2001
This was a very well thought out movie, and goes down as one of the best I have ever seen. John Malkovich plays a great role, as well as John Cusak and Camron Diaz. A story about an a puppetier that finds work as a filing person, and discovers a portal into the head of actor John Malkovich. Being someone else is deffintly the theme of this story in more ways than one, and by seeing this great flick, you will understand what I mean. Deffinitly a movie that moves onto my all time top ten list. A must see!

This is a film that I had to watch more than once to take it in. Unique storyline and superb acting. John Malkovitch is fantastic as is John Cusack and Cameron Diaz. They work together extremely well and made it work. This will be a cult film and will most probably be studied by film students. I'm glad I own this film.
AngryFraggle 01/22/2001
This was by far one of the best movies ever made. Spike Jonze is one of the smartest men alive to take on this movie. Number one... John Malkovich is one of the best actors of our time how crazy is it to have the idea to go inside his head. Number two... how crazy is it that they had john cusack (a regular guy off the street) as a puppet master. One Word ORIGINALITY. I could go on about how good this movie is for a day but there is not enough space for me to write how much i love this movie. This is a garunteed classic. This movie fits into every category by at least one scene or another. A must see

Being John Malkovich can be described in one word - genius. The bizzare plot around which the film revolves, (A down and out puppeteer discovers a gateway into the mind of actor John Malkovich), could so easily have been handled in the wrong way but first time movie director Spike Jones' direction is next to flawless and his background as a commercial director is useful, as the film shifts gear from subtle to sublime to blatant a lot. The cast is well chosen, with John Cusack playing the puppeteer whos life is irreversably change by his discovery, and his character provides a good anchor for the plot, as he is infact the least eccentric of the lot. Cameron Diaz also proves decisivly in this picture that she can act well without the use of her looks, sporting a wig which would not look out of place lying on a motorway bleeding. The star of the show, Malkovich, is eccelent and in my opinion a vastly underrated actor. He acts himself in a truly believable way and is very clever in his acting when he is being 'possesed.' Look out for the scene where he enters his own mind portal - it is one of the funniest scenes I have ever seen in any film. All in all, the story is odd and brilliant, the cast is superb, the direction inspired and the end result is spectacular. This is one to buy, a real watch and watch again film.
Shroomwoman 01/02/2001
Wow, this movie was a breath of fresh air! The original plot (a puppeteer discovers a portal that leads into John Malkovich's brain) takes you on a wild ride, reminiscent of "The Twilight Zone." There are surprises at every turn, and the show is filled with incredibly strange situations and bizarre humor. The movie was well-cast, too, with John Cusack as a dissatisfied, impulsive puppeteer and Cameron Diaz as his dippy, confused wife. (Diaz shed her "glamour girl" image so effectively, I didn't even recognize her until I read the credits.) The show gets off to a great start and never slows down. Not once did I look at the clock during the movie. If you're in the mood for a mind-expanding, creative show, "Being John Malkovich" is a great choice.

This movie is hilarious. I just rented it last night, and it exceeded my very high expectations. How often do you see this combination of a truly original idea, great acting, and great directing? I definitely give points to John Malkovich the actor for agreeing to do this unusual movie. That trip through his subconscious was one of my favorite parts, and it takes an actor with a great sense of humor to go along with it. And even Charlie Sheen gets points for mocking himself in his brief appearances as Malkovich’s friend. John Cusak has started getting on my nerves recently, but he does a great job, too, as the tormented puppeteer who suffers from unrequited love. But be warned - this movie isn’t for everyone. If you’re looking for a standard, by-the-numbers action, comedy, or drama, look somewhere else. But if you’re in the mood for something different and strange, this is a great rental. “Being John Malkovich” is quirky, twisted, and very entertaining.

I thought this movie was intelligent, funny, and I highly recommend it. The story was completely original. When I went to the theater to see it, I had no idea what to expect. I didn't even know who John Malkovich was until I saw his face. When I left the theater, I was shocked at what the movie had ended up being about. It was great. It was a bizarre movie, no doubt, but in a thought provoking way. I don't know how anyone can say that there is poor acting. Did you even recognize Cameron Diaz? I think it is great that she took the role even though she wasn't playing a beauty queen. The whole movie blew me away.

One of the quirkiest movies! Awesome story! And good to see Diaz in a different role, ie not some ditzy blonde who gets all the guys! John Malkovich was great! Loved the scenes inside Malkovich's subconscious!!

a great film all around. when the film started i was wondering what would happen if malkovich went into his own portal. i didnt think it would happen but he did. the scene after is amazing as is the scene in his subconcious. an instant classic, one of my favorites, a must see for anyone who is looking for something different. the ending is awesome, i wont spoil it for anyone who hasnt seen it. no doubt that this is a 5 out of 5.

Interesting idea, some funny dialogue, but overall, it didn't meet my expectations. Parts were painfully slow.

The only thing that I'll give BJM is that it's smart. That's it! It wasn't funny or thrilling (until the end)at all.

Recently, I've become skeptical of the "quirky and daring" films that make movie critics swoon (like American Beauty), which are so often just predictable and pretentious. But here's a wonderful exception: "Being John Malkovich" is a huge joyride of a movie. Almost every scene is 100% bizarre, but the humor is mostly really subtle. As over-the-top as the whole concept is, there's nothing gratuitous (the way any of Tarantino's imitators would have it). Excellent acting, funny script, perfectly directed by Spike Jonez.
lips457du 06/21/2000
Definately worth seeing. I bizarre but fascinating movie. I thought that the acting was really good and the plot thought provoking. However, be warned that the movie was a bit unsettling, especially in the bizarre physical relationships.
ldja7295du 06/09/2000
A great film. It explores ideas of sexuality and celeberity in a fun and light-hearted way. John Malkovich's capacity for weirdness is used to great puppeteering effect. John Cusak is always great, here as a loser tortured by unequated love. Cameron Diaz is almost unrecognizable, but the sweetness of her character shines through. The ending is brilliant.
ugro7293et 06/09/2000
This movie was great. The idea that there was a half floor and a portal for these people into a man's head was great. The dialogue was wonderful and John Cusak was great.
home7291om 06/09/2000
One of the most twisted, funny movies out there, this film shows off the talent of director Spike Jonze in so many ways. The first scene grabs you and you question how silly this movie is. Just when you think it can't get anymore outrageous, the next scene blows you out of your seat with squeals of delight.

Shocking but not in a good way.
abre7282om 06/09/2000
It was a very trippy movie. Great cast in a great concept. It was very original. It isn't for sheep (i.e. people who pay to go and see movies like Titanic).
mbol7217du 06/07/2000
An incredibly funny and interesting movie. Weird ideas. However, an interesting underly philosophy.
ksae7129du 06/05/2000
This is the best movie I've seen in a while. It was very entertaining because it was humorous in a corny kind of way. I loved it's entire aspect and it was very trippy. In addition, I had an idea to film a movie where the camera person was the "star" of the flick. This movie did that for a couple of scenes. Great idea!
Munson 06/05/2000
This is one of the most original movies I have seen in a while. Though not for everybody, the movie had points where it was incredibly funny (it dragged a little in the middle which kept it from getting a five). John Cusack and Cameron Diaz were great, as was Malkovich.
ldbe7095om 06/03/2000
Being John Malkovich does an excellent job of portraying not only himself, but the other characters who posses him. An excellent performance by Cusack.
tiff7022om 05/31/2000
This movie is not even worth renting. The acting is bad, the story line is stupid. It was made out to be better than it was.
artbuf 05/21/2000
While it had some high points, this movie was not rip-roaringly hilarious nor intellectually captivating. I think the only reason it brought any interest to the attention of the average American is the lesbian love interest and the bitch sex kitten...both played by the same dull-witted actress.
adam2112om 04/07/2000
Great, great, great! Fantastic that they could get Malkovich to do it. How about a sequal: "Being Tom Cruise"? Nah...
kath5397et 03/15/2000
This movie was so bizarre that it just didn't say anything worthwhile to me.
mart415om 01/25/2000
This was the most creative plot I've seen made into a move in a long while. Based on a far out concept, this movie will entertain you during its whole duration and even after, when you find your mind wondering off to thinking about the movie. If you're in for a fun, well acted, well written flick, this is a must see.
