Good film though a bit long. Acting was excellent, good Steven King story, and well crafted. Probably should be in the Sci-fi - Fantasy section though.

I love this movie. . .almost made me cry. . .I'm a sap. . .
BugahaNE 11/20/2005
I'm going through all the movies currently in the Top 20, and this is the only one I really did not care for. I was so bored, could not wait for it to be over.
Inmyopinion 07/07/2005
This has got to be one of the best movies ever made. Tom Hanks, as always, is brilliant in this movie. Has a great suspension of disbelief. You know this couldn't be a true story, but you wish so much that it was, and believe every single thing that happens on it. This is deffinetly in my top five list of movies I've seen.
RealityChick 04/09/2005
Awesome movie; acting was great!
sfalconer 04/01/2005
This was a really great movie and it really suprised me as I did not know what to expect. It is just a really good story and the acting was fantastic. The production was right on, giving that the depression era look. How can you not like this movie it is Tom Hanks at his best.
irishgit 03/28/2005
Predictable, sentimental garbage.
Molfan 03/27/2005
Good movie. I was not so sure I would like this movie since i usually shy away from prison movies This is seen through the eyes of a prison guard played by Tom Hanks he has a special prisoner who has been wrongly accused of killing two little girls. THe man John Coffey Is a large african american man who has the magical power of healing He is a very kind caring man.who did not deserve to be in prison. The movie has it's good guys and bad guys.It is a bit too long but the acting and storyline is very good.

Another great Tom Hanks film. This film verified how I feel about the death penalty. I read the book too and found the movie to be fairly good at covering the book. The characters were believable and well rounded. I felt like I knew them.
Aurielle 12/06/2004
It was a powerful book and an equally powerful film. I thought David Morse was especially good in his role. This movie nearly changed the way I look at the death penalty and death row in this country. My favorite scene is when John is watching the movie of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, and tears are streaming down his face. Michael Clarke Duncan gave a very powerful performance.
Solenoid DH 04/14/2004
It was a riveting movie, but like so many others, was ruined by giving us anti-southern stereotypes. Those clowns in Hollywood don't have a clue what it's like to live here in the south. Tom Hanks is a fine actor, and is worthy of much better than this.
RebelYell1861 01/04/2004
My seeing this was only a result of the theater we went to not having the movie we had hoped to see. But I must say I thought it was pretty good. I mean the flies (or whatever they were) flying out of the guy's mouth when he would heal someone caused the movie to take on what I thought to be an unnecassarily far-fetched role, but it was a pretty interesting movie. And Tom Hanks almost always knows how to choose the best movies to be in anyway.
freebird_0128 12/28/2003
I was a huge fan of this book and thankfully this film only let me down slightly. The casting for Green Mile was really what set it apart; every actor fit his role to a T. Tom Hanks, one of the best actors of our time, gave a solid, believable performance again. Michael Clarke Duncan was specatcular; it was almost as if he was tailor-made for that heart-breaking role. While there was something I can't quite pick out that didn't equal the book, it was, in essence, as wonderful and touching.
LadyShark4534 12/24/2003
The movie was almost as wonderfully written as the book. Keep in mind the book takes place in the 1930's. The movie seems to take place later on. Tom Hanks plays a security guard living in the deep south who befriends a prisoner named John Coffey played to perfection by Michael Clarke Duncan. A awe inspiring story that's tragic and deeply fulfulling.

A great movie. Great acting and visuals. I really enjoyed the story of John; a simple man with extraordinary gifts. It kept me interested until the end. Seeing Percy get his in the end was a relief for me.
afterglow70 08/10/2003
The acting was excellent but the story line sort of caught me off guard. I didn't lot about the movie when I saw it and when it ended up to be a story about a man w/ special powers, I was a little disappointed. I think it was because I thought it would be something that people could relate to in some way, but it wasn't. Although I was slightly disappointed, it was still a good movie.
ClassicTVFan47 07/10/2003
Another boring, sleepy, profanity-laced, headache drama with no light moments and no happy ending.

Yet another great movie made from a Stephen King novel. Ever notice how many Tom Hanks movies are in the top 20 for this site?
Redoedo 05/24/2003
"The Green Mile" is a movie that I probably will never fully forget, because it succeeded in not only grabbing my attention but also grabbing my emotions. I laughed and I cried during this movie, and watching it was worth every minute. The plot was solid, and the acting was supurb. Props to Michael Clarke Duncan for his phenominal performance as John Coffey, an African American falsely accused of killing two young girls and awaiting execution. We discover that he has the ability to heal, and that he is truly "God's Miracle". Also great performances as usual by Tom Hanks and James Cromwell. Highly reccomended!

heetz11 10/20/2002
I loved this movie despite the fact they cast Tom Hanks in it. The success of this movie is truly a testament to its director, Frank Darabont (of Shawshank Redemption fame)and not so much Tom Hanks (again, the most overrated actor currently gracing the silver screen).
TheFreak 06/03/2002
The Green Mile is without a doubt one of the best movies I have ever seen. It was nominated for a few Academy Awards, and I personally think that it deserved Best Picture (don't get me wrong, American Beauty was great, but I think this was better). It's got an impressive cast - Tom Hanks, Michael Clarke Duncan, James Cromwell, Doug Hutchinson - and the way that Death Row (E Block) is represented is beyond the mortal imagination of most human beings. Both the inmates and the guards are humanized, and it shows the horrors of the electric chair and the many ills of our death penalty system. John Coffey the character is an almost nonfictional representation of anyone who has ever been wronged by the criminal justice system. I applaud the director and actors. Take care, everyone!

3 words, that actually make a name. Michael Clarke Duncan. Wow, talk about making a movie. Not only his size, but his emotion. This movie is an extremely good film. It stars Tom Hanks in one of his better acted roles, inluding the whole "urinary infection" which is magnificently portrayed. Really this movie does not overtsay it's time either, using all 3 hours for a fantastic storyline. There is one word of caution however, it is not recommended for children. It has nearly 100 profane words, and some sexual dialogue. But for the adults, this is a must see.
yorkgirl 10/02/2001
This was a spectactular movie and the cast was amazing. Even though it is over three hours long, I couldn't stop watching it. It has such a magical tone to it. And the music is almost eerie. The cast gave an unbelievable performance. Doug Hutchinson was amazing as Percy, the little a**hole, and by the end of the movie you just had the urge to strangle him. Tom Hanks, as always, gives an astounding performance as Paul Edgecombe. Bonnie Hunt was very good, too, as Paul's wife. David Morse was great and I give him two thumbs up for pushing Percy around and nearly beating the crap out of him. Sam Rockwell was so hilarious as Wild Bill. Barry Pepper as the young gaurd on E block. Michael Jeter as the inmate who befriends a mouse. And, of course, Michael Clarke Duncan as John Coffey, accused of murder, but can give life with the touch of his hands. I loved this movie. The good and the evil in these men of E Block was brought out in a marvelous way. If you loved the movie, read the book.

Really really good movie... read the book... just as good if not better
RubyRed 04/16/2001
This movie is outstanding, not just for it's fine acting and interesting plot, but for it's ability to make the viewer think long and hard about the place the death penalty has in this so-called civilised society of ours. I would rate this movie as one of the best I have ever seen, and have watched it twice since I first saw it 3 months ago. A must-see for any adult who likes depth behind their entertainment.

Way tooo long and overrated!!!

This was the saddest movie I have ever seen. I couldn't stop crying! I couldn't even get through the end of it, I had to turn it off. "Titanic" was nothing compared to this!

Wow. What a good movie. Didn't you just love the way Tom Hanks managed to make the character seem so real? Gee, I can't see him enough. MORE TOM HANKS!!!!! Aaahhh! Ok, back to the movie. I loved the ending, loved the plot, the theme, everything about it! I'm looking forward to reading the book...

This was a really great movie, and one of my favourites. It's really worth watching. It's original and really well acted by everyone. It's a fairly long movie but it keeps your attention throughout. It is a little graphic though so it's not for the weak stomached.
tRuE_cOlOrS 01/22/2001
This is one of the best movies i've ever seen but it's a total tear-jerker and in the end you find that it moves you inside a lot.

Outstanding plot, with drama, emotion and comedy. Up there with American Beauty.

I think that this movie is a must-see! It has like comedy and like sad stuff at the same time. to me i couldnt watch this movie again but it was awesome the first time. I dont know how to rate this, i guess u have to see it yourself, because its hard to rate it without like ruining suprises.

This movie made me think about my career in law-enforcement. I was wanting to work in a prison but I have changed my mind. If I had to see or even here about someone being exicuted. So I think I will probably be a normal police officer now.
wooby 11/04/2000
Can I just say this movie was incredible. I didnt even notice the hours going by because it hooked me at the beginning and transported me into the world of Paul Edgecomb and the rest of the guards and the prisoners. The ensemble of great actors is what really made this movie spectacular. David Morse and Doug Hutchison top the list. They were both incredible. Doug played a sniveling little rat to a T. Such a moving powerful story. And so sad. All the actors did their parts so well, you really felt what the characters were feeling. I have watched it again and again. I never tire of it.
JUDYF 10/20/2000
Definately worth the three hours... sparking every emotion within a person. Cast is awesome, acting is great and storyline is excellent. Three months later we still talk about John Coffee.
sds@8839om 10/17/2000
This movie should have won the Oscar!! Truly a moving story!!
popeye@oz 10/08/2000
Tom Hanks,(though I'm not a great fan)gave his best performance yet but I was constantly drawn to the performance of Davis Morse (Brutal). The absence his subtle support would have given this film a very different reception. Here is a guy that has the light & shade face that made stars out of actors of yesteryear, but has been missed by film-makers of today. Nice to see a film that was not prostituted by special FX.
sam66mvp 10/06/2000
This has to be one of the top movies of the year. The movies will draw you in and extract every emotion you possess. The characters are well defined early in the picture and the story just leads you along. I couldn't find a weak link in the cast or the story. This is a must see.

The green mile was a wonderful movie! One never knows what life comes your way, make the best of everything you do in life and ??

How this movie did not win the Oscar for best film is ridiculous! I was moved to tears many times.

I finally saw The Green Mile this weekend on Pay per view. I had held out a long time on seeing this since I thought it was going to be the same old story done over again. I was expecting the worst and was pleasantly surprised. It was actually a good movie. The acting was really good. I am a Tom Hanks fan and he proved himself again in this movie as a fine actor. The story was moving and it was put together really well. I don't by any means think this is the best movie I have ever seen but it is definately better than I expected. I guess I shouldn't have doubted Stephan King as much as I did. I like most all of his work.
secretgoldfish 09/20/2000
Mawkish, overbearing and at least an hour longer than it deserves to be, "The Green Mile" makes syrup of ipecac look like an aperitif. Hanks, as the straightlaced prison-guard-with-a-heart, was so earnest about lending this film some gravity he apparently forgot how absurd the story is. Now matter how you cut it, giant, blubbering black men who regurgitate flies are just damn funny -- even if they do have the power to cure urinary tract infections with one well placed grip. Worse, this studio treacle actually got nominated for Best Picture over "Boys Don't Cry" and "Rushmore." Explain that.

The Green Mile is a wonderful story that will make you believe in miracles and despise the dregs of our society. I totally fell in love with the characters and had to get out my Kleenex a few times. This is a great film and has wonderful performances by all the actors.
