The legal points were all pretty much correct and one had only remember that anything can be seen as legal as long as they don't get caught

VERY well done, Ms. Roberts!!!

It was a good movie and it definitely brought some of society's ills to the surface.

Her tit wisecrack makes the movie?

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY overrated.

A very over rated movie. I looked forward to seeing this movie, I'd heard so much about it and saw the real E.B. interviewed and Julia Roberts, I was really looking forward to seeing it. I was very disappointed. I thought though the story was true, it basically had been done before and it was very predictable. As for Erin crying because she missed her baby saying it's first word ... get over it, it doesn't matter what work you're doing unless your kid is super glued to your side you're going to miss something, esp. any of us working mums.

"True story" or not, if I never see another movie demonizing big business it will be too soon. Please, for the love of God, can I have ONE film where the businessman is not the devil? Please? Anyway, on to "Erin Brockovich". This is without question the best performance I've ever seen from Julia Roberts, but I'm grading on the curve. Her portrayal of Erin Brockovich includes constant potty mouth and an overload of sassy attitude, combined with an extensive wardrobe of slutty attire. Unfortunately, the movie allows for this character to triumph even though she insists on behaving like an uncouth, hypocritical, self-absorbed bigmouth who can't finish a sentence without cursing. The basic story involves a small rural town in California in which a large number of citizens have contracted life-threatening illnesses from contaminated water, and the class action suit they file against the evil Pacific Gas and Electric. Erin comes across questionable documents in a file she is processing for a law firm (she is not a lawyer, just an office worker), and decides to get to the bottom of it. The story snowballs from there, however the more interesting relationships between Erin and her family, employer, and her boyfriend Harley (oops, I mean George) make up the more watchable parts of the movie. This story has more in common with you average "movie of the week" than anything else. Many times the plot is telegraphed to the viewer in that formulaic Hollywood way, in fact I never doubted for a second how this story would turn out. Albert Finney's character was well done, and to be honest Julia Robert's character was believable as well; I simply did not LIKE Erin BUT I had no problem with her believability as a character. The biker boyfriend... the less said the better. I didn't find him convincing. The relationship between Erin and George WAS believable, however I have a feeling that the "recap" scenes (where the two of them visit one of the plaintiffs following the lawsuit) featuring Erin and George were tacked on in the pursuit of the "feel good" ending. Hey, Marg Helgenberger makes an appearance as one of the townsfolk, and her character is VERY different from the one she plays in CSI. She does a great job; check it out. The story unravels in a typical manner, and of course every single person involved with PG&E is depicted as arrogant, uncaring, and just plain bad. Big Business = BAD = standard Hollywood scriptwriting. True, a business (or an individual) who contributes to contaminated groundwater is to be held responsible for their actions, and I can make no excuses for the company as they are portrayed here. I always find it difficult to believe that every businessman / corporation in the movies is Evil Incarnate. What the film glosses over is the fact that while PG&E was cited by the California Water Board multiple times to clean up their facilities, it was the GOVERNMENT who did not enforce existing laws properly, allowing PG&E to continue their hazardous practices. The real problem lies in the fact that most utility companies are government-sponsored monopolies, and are essentially exempt from free market factors which would drive your average irresponsible company out of business anyway. I didn't find this movie very funny as some reviewers have, mostly because the humor was based upon the "shock" value of having Erin rip someone's head off with creative profanity. I'd recommend the first hour of "Full Metal Jacket" for those who think Erin's outbursts are high comedy. "Erin Brockovich" is watchable, but certainly not award winning material. Julia Roberts makes a fine attempt at a serious dramatic role, yet I suspect that the powers-that-be had more than a hand in weakening a film that had a lot of potential. Julia is made to look just as pretty as she ever does, which detracts from the idea that she wanted to step outside her more typecast roles; "dolling her up" was not a good idea for those wishing to sell Roberts in a serious role.
forgotten hero 08/08/2003
I can't believe people actually liked this god awful movie. A real lawyer wouldn't let some piece of trailer trash that dresses like she's a friggin' prostitute yell profanity in their face. But I guess if you flash some cleavage you can get whatever your tiny heart desires.
kolby1973 08/03/2003
This movie is in my top 10 greatest movies of all time. I loved the drama this movie had ! The ending made me feel great, too. Erin is definately someone to look up to in this world. There are so few like her left anymore. This movie was also the first movie made by Julia Roberts that was good. I never thought that day would come.
Redoedo 05/24/2003
It was a pretty good, captivating, compelling drama. As Wiggum said, a David and Goliath type of movie. I thought that Julia Roberts gave one of her best performances yet as Erin Brockovich. She was both serious and cocky at the same time, and it was a nice change to see her take on such a role. This movie is definately worth watching at least once if you like legal dramas or Julia Roberts.
philc 04/07/2003
I liked the fact that this was a true story and Julia did a great job acting.
kyes 02/09/2003
This movie had a good concept but I wasn't crazy about it. I always enjoy a good true story - if it's done well. I think this one could've been a lot better. The critics liked it but I still think it could've been more compelling, like some of the latter Grisham movies like the Rainmaker. Julia Roberts in my opinion just doesn't cut it as a big-mouthed down-on-her-luck woman from the wrong side of the tracks, bordering on white-trash, with a big old chip on her shoulder. I think she only won the Oscar because it was a dignified and, well, rather solemn story. Julia Roberts has a loud mouth but she failed to bring any down-to-earthness or working-class charm to her character, I think because in real life she possesses neither one.
Molfan 01/25/2003
good movie with Julia Roberts. based on the true story of Erin Brockovich an assistant to an attorney who helped win a multi million dollar law suit against an electric company. that had been poisoning a whole town with the water. Very intersting movie. Kind of nice to see someone who was an "underdog" become a success.
psycho_mom 11/16/2002
Okay, I admit I'm biased as a single mom of three kids who would like to think that someone like me could do something so amazing. But really, she was just working hard and stumbled upon something that, even if I were her, few could turn their back on. I liked this movie for some of the more subtle scenes that depict the heartache of a mother who must work to keep food on the table. The best scene was when she was in her car coming back from Hinkley late at night and heard about her baby's first word. Julia Roberts acted in that scene as any other mom whose heart was broken over missing such an important moment would. I cried with her. I tell any single person that doesn't seem to "get" what it is like for me to watch this movie. Those that took my advice come back and say that they had no idea what true juggling was. I don't agree with her outspoken way of behaving sometimes, but in all she is to be admired.
charliethetuna 02/08/2002
Erin Brockovich is an adaptation of a real story. For those people who know about the real case, it's a pretty good adaptation. Believe it or not, the movie is tamer than the truth. Yes, the real EB dresses like a whore. Not the way Julia Roberts dressed in the movie, but 10 times more revealing and she's open about it. Yes, the real EB has a gutter mouth. That's the way she talks and she's open about it. And when you're talking about this movie, don't forget the marvelous job that Albert Finney did as the crotchety Ed Masry. Unless you're predisposed to hate Julia Roberts, it's a must see.
afterglow70 06/15/2001
I liked it because it was pretty much true to life. I thought that Julia Roberts did an excellent job in portraying Erin and I am not sure if there is anyone else who could have done that good of a job.
MedgarEvers 05/09/2001
What did I miss? No, Julia, I was not impressed with your performance. I heard so many good things about this, and I chuckled in parts but overall... not good.
callmetootie 04/15/2001
Erin Brockovich took home the academy award for best actress, Julia Roberts. You may be good in some films, and I kind of found out a bit over the top in your role here. The movie was a bit slow at times, and Julia went over the hill with her role.
HughJackman's "mate" 04/10/2001
Julia Roberts was so good in this movie. She was so "kickbutt". I don't know, call me crazy, but I loved the way they styled her hair in the movie. The movie was very enlightening, and it's startling that it's actually true.
tracey 04/02/2001
Okay movie, but overall was highly overrated. Julia Roberts' performance was fine, but a dozen other actresses could have done just as good a job. Was entertaining, but not Oscar-worthy.

Erin Brockovich would definately be on my top ten list of great movies. I feel it deserves a much higher placement on this RateItALllist because not only was it a riveting, interesting, timely film circling on an important issue, it was based on a true story and landmark legal case! And if any of you reading think I only really like it so much because I'm a big Julia Roberts fan, think again because I was one of the very few people who hated Pretty Woman. Actually I didn't think Roberts was good in any of her many films, except maybe Sleeping With the Enemy. - But in Erin Brockovich, Roberts really amazed me! She not only performed the part flawlessly, but she just seemed to belong to the story. She was one with the story and the spirit of the story. Julia Roberts deserved her Academy Award for this film.
SarahRose 02/07/2001
Julia was great in this film and she deserves every award she gets (and all those she doesn't!). This film deserves the highest kudos!

Julia deserves the acadamy nomination. Superb acting, realistic to the date. Good overall film based upon a true story. Has its share of drama and comedy. Great plot.

I couldn't agree more with the comment of "Eb.b5644om". This is a very manupulative film with laughable scripts and false emotions, worst of all Julie Robert is most annoying ever! Obviously, this is the usual Robert's ugling duckling "comedy" sugar coated in dramatic form since it claimed itself adapted from the true story. Many people thus thought they have seen a great dramatic film. I cannot believe its popularity and critical acclaims except from Roger Ebert (check out his comment). The bad langauge is unbelievable. I doubt the real Erin could get a job in a law firm with this degree of foul mouth, rude attitude and prostitute-worn wardrobes, let alone insult the lawyers made completely idiots in the film. Remember films based on true story do not always have the right details or even story lines!
TheShoeLady 10/31/2000
Extremely well acted by all-I especially liked Albert Finney-an entertaining rental.

This is a great movie for both guys and girls. It's kind of long, but you don't notice because you are so into the movie. It's great to see with a big crowd because everyone will be cheering her on.

This movie was so good. The fact that it was a true story made it great.

I saw this on video a couple of weeks ago and it was exactly what I had expected. It was a good story (I knew the ending because of so many specials on the story on Entertainment tonight). It was an interesting story. Julia did a good job portraying the real Erin. It is just a perfect rent a movie.
upchuck 09/19/2000
Just saw this movie the other night on video...I too was glad I only paid the rental cost and had not paid the full shot at the theater. The movie was okay...even without knowing the case it was very predictable and had a too typical "Julia Roberts' happy ending.
Wiggum 09/18/2000
Good is the just the right way to describe this movie. It isn't great, but it's better than average. Critics said a lot of nice things about this movie, but I resisted seeing it because the previews just looked boring. Yeah, some assistant in a law office uncovers a big PG&E toxic waste cover-up and helps initiate a huge lawsuit, OK, I get it... And that's pretty much the movie. But Julia Roberts does a really impressive job as Erin, her character is interesting, and it's a nice change of pace to see a true-life David and Goliath story. All in all a worthwhile rental, but I'm glad I didn't shell out $10 to see this in the theater.

I just need to know if Erin Brockovich ever married George? I noticed that her name is now Erin Brockovich-Ellis. But, it never tells us anywhere in the movie, or in the credits, what George's last name is.
afst9999du 08/21/2000
This is a very entertaining movie, yet it is a bit long in the middle and it may drag for some people. But because I love Julia Roberts, it was great. Plus, she has a strong, smart character and the movie is based on a true story which boosts it up.
init9859om 08/17/2000
Julia Roberts was phenomenal in this movie, if she does't receive an award of some kind, hollywood must be in a coma.

Other than being a little long, the movie was good. It held my attention and was based on a good plot. The fact that it was a true story made it even better.

Being that I saw the real Erin Brockovich on a news show before the movie it was hard to see Julia Roberts play that part. Overall the movie was very good.
judy8995om 07/24/2000
An overall enjoyable movie. The wise cracks were great. But wardrobe was a bit over the top. I could really feel for the victims in the movie.
shel8953du 07/23/2000
Casting was great and the movie was well acted. Both character and plot development were good. However, the movie approaches the story with a narrow understanding of feminism, and seems to dismiss the importance of raising children to healthy child development.

Not your typical Julia Roberts movie, but it's great! See a different side to her and be prepared to cheer her on, as always.

We need more post-feminist movies! Julia Roberts made the movie perfect with her popularity. I definitely went to see it because of Julia Roberts celebrity.

A movie based on reality which depicts a very good story with superb acting. Very well presented and documented.

This movie was cool. I really felt for the victims of PG&E's conspiracy. And I was really glad that Erin was able to expose them. Great story and acted well. Julia is the bomb!

Had all the ingredients necessary for a great movie: strong plot, good dialogue, romance, intrigue, and a leading lady who was as exceptional an actress as she was beautiful. This is one of the most well done David and Goliath stories I have seen in a long time. I would strongly recommend this movie to anyone, regardless of their movie prefs.
