Again, not into the caged animals. Especially the ones that like to try and gnaw your fingers off!

I'm surprised these are being grouped together, as they differ greatly from one another. Hamsters are very sociable with people, while gerbils tend to be less interactive. Having once owned both, I would recommend hamsters over gerbils. They both make excellent pets, though.

My montessori classroom had gerbils. They bit everyone and escaped all the time. They also die really quickly.

I've had quite a few hamsters here & there & I like them a little more than gerbils for some reason. I think they're cute & they're a lot of fun when you put them in their exercise ball to run around.

gerbils/hamsters have hard to clean cages, but easy to feed. they have a slight odor not too noticable, but at times it can be distinct, also gebils/hampsters have a very short life span.

They look cute at the store, but ounce you take them home you quickly realize that gerbils are only good to feed snakes!!! Some bites and there is no way you can have fun playing with those creatures when they keep pooping all over the expensive furniture!!! They stink so bad !!! I bought them a very nice cage and all they did is to chew everything up! I am desperate, the beasts cost me 5$ each, but cost me so much in food, in cages, toys, and in time cleaning their mess! they even cost me a friend, I lost my best friend last year when my evil gerbil bite her on the nose, she was so mad, she never came back!
Whatever, if you want an useless pet, by a fish, at least if you dont like it you can flush it down the toilet without feeling bad ...

HAMSTERS hamsters, so cute, so cuddly, so innocent... NOT! hamsters are mean! they look cute and innocent but they bite, scratch and make so much noise at night (they're nocturnal). The thing i hate about them is that nasty little bite they have, you just stick your hand into they're cage to feed them and the next thing you know is theres a hamster hanging off your finger! The only good thing about them is they dont need cleaning out as much as guinea pigs. GERBILS Gerbils look cute to me but i dont know much about them.

ive had syrian hamsters since i was about 8 now im 16 and ive had 4 at once. They are sooo cute, but female hamsters are more viscious than males. I've had a female and she was very tame but did smell alot. When they are babys they're fun to watch when they climb about the cage. They love to escape though since ive had loads escape one even went behind the kitche cupboards and another nicked all his treats id left at the side of the cage and ate some of my chocolate i had by my bed. luckily they were all found safe. they make really good pets though for old and young.

Hamsters make a good first pet if you want your kid to just look and not touch. Dwarf hamsters are evil. There is no debate. I once had raised a litter of five dwarf hamsters just to see if I could make them nice...at 2 months old I was unable to touch them because they would bite at me. Teddy Bear Hamsters are your best luck at finding a nice hamster. I would say about 6 out of every 10 Teddy's are friendly. However, the thing to remember is that they are escape artists. No matter what, they will find a way out of their cage. If you can get past the smell and the biting, then a Teddy may make a good pet

Hamsters are not good. I'm only rating gerbils. Hamsters bite more than gerbils. Gerbils ARE entertaining because they are always active. They're easy to care for and make good first pets. Plus, gerbils are SOOOOOOOOO cute when you give them cheerios. It looks like they're eating mini donuts. awwwwww. Overall, a good starter pet for children to learn to care for pets. :)

I have two adorable hamsters, and they make excellant pets. I'm allergic to dwarf hamsters, and I found out that lots of other people are too. So you should check to see if you are before you get one.

I HAD A LOT OF HAMSTERS,RIGHT NOW I JUST HAVE ONE.THEY DO MAKE GREAT PETS.SOMETIMES THEIR CAGE WILL SMELL AND THEN YOU HAVE TO CLEAN IT.I HAVE A DWARF HAMSTER AND SHE IS MEAN.ALOT OF PEOPLE AND BOOKS SAID THAT THESE HAMSTERS ARE THE BEST HAMSTERS,BUT I DONT THINK SO,IF YOU HAVE AN DWARF HAMSTER CAN YOU PLEASE TELL ME IF ITS NICE OR MEAN.I THINK TEDDY BEAR HAMSTERS ARE THE BEST HAMSTERS.ONE TIME I HAD TWO TEDDY BEAR HAMSTERS ONE WAS A MALE AND THE OTHER WAS A FEMALE,A COUPLE OF DAYS LATER HER STUMACH LOOKED BIGGER SO I SAID SHES GONNA HAVE BABY'S.I WAS HAPPY.A COUPLE OF WEEKS LATER I WALKED INTO MY ROOM AND SHE WAS GIVING BIRTH,OUT OF THE WHOLE LITTER OF EIGHT BABYS ONLY ONE DID NOT MAKE IT.AND SO THE MOTHER HAD TO EAT IT.SHE WAS A REAL GOOD MOTHER TO ALL SEVEN BABYS.THEY ALL GOT STRONG AND STARTED TO GROW,I GAVE TWO TO MY BEST FRIEND AND I KEPT TWO BUT EVENTUALLY I GOT RID OF ALL THE HAMSTERS TO THE PET STORE.

These are smelly little rodents, but oddly, in a way, they're kinda cute. Seeing they're so docile and harmless and ineffectual, I guess they're good to have around children. I understand Richard Gere would give these a 6-star rating, if he could.

They are intelligent little animals and they're so cute and soft but they sleep during the whole day! When you want to see them they're hiding in their nest. The only time they come out is to pee in their little corner and then they get back inside. At night they make noise and the worst of all, you have to change the bedding often because they stink like hell. The smell can get so strong, the neighbor can smell it all the way to his room. Also, sometimes they bite and they bite HARD!!!

Hamsters can be fun, cheap and require little maintenance (for most people). If you don't clean their cage regularly, they will stink. They are loud, and do most of their activity at night. I've had several hamsters. My favorite was a little peach and white hamster. She was very lovable and talented (she begged for food and gave kisses). She had a litter of babies (you'll read about the father of the babies further down). She got out of her cage a few times. One time she crawled up under the dryer. I had to take the back of the dryer off to get her out, she was a grey hamster at that point from all the lint. She lived to a ripe old age of about three years (died of natural causes). I had another hamster that was given to me. This hamster ended up have a brain tumor that weighed it's head down so much that it walked lopp sided. I came home one day to what looked like a scene from Friday the 13th. It appeared as though the hamsters head had exploded, but it was still alive. I rushed it to the emergency after hours vet and had it put to sleep. Then there was yet another hamster (this one is the father to the babies mentioned above). He ended up getting a bladder infection. I spent over $50 on medication (which I had to feed him through an eye dropper). It appeared as though the infection was clearing up. Then it happened. I discovered that he had knawed his private part off. His bladder had gotten so backed up, he looked like he was about to explode. I also rushed this one to the vet and had him put to sleep. Then comes my last hamster horror story. I bought two dwarf hamsters (very small breed from Asia). The bedding I used for their cages was intended for larger hamsters only (I didn't know this until after the amputation). The poor little hamster's feet got entwined in bedding. I thought it was strange he hadn't moved out of the same spot for awhile. When I finally realized his feet were stuck, I rushed him to the vet. The bedding was so badly entwined and had cut off the circulation so bad, that they had to get rid of one leg. I brought my three legged hamster home, and he lived on for awhile. The infection from the leg eventually killed him. I still had the other dwarf hamster, and my husband thought it would be a good idea to connect the cages together (the cage that the other hamster died in). He did this with out cleaning the cage out, and the disease from the three legged hamster killed the perfectly healthy hamster. Under normal circumstances, they can be a good first pet for a child. As for me, I gave up. Special note: if a hamster has babies, keep the cage dark and do not touch any of the babies or the bedding. Sometimes if the mother senses a human smell, she will kill one (or more) of the babies. Also, if you see the mother stuffing the babies into her cheek pouches, don't worry. This is how they transport their babies from one location to another.
