Say whatever you wqnt, but the story was beautiful. I like the nice balance between love and disaster. The sadness of the movie is its very essence and very beutiful. Love this movie!

It was the cinematic equivalent of a theme park ride, which is what a lot of people went to the theatre to experience. Althiough it was a poorly written and extremely corny romantic drama, there's a huge audience for that too, if Sandra Bullock's bank account is any yardstick. And it was handsomely produced at the pinacle of film making craft for its day. So the box office receipts shouldn't come as a surprise. The acting was easy to understand, the leads are capable of much better, but I'm guessing were instructed to play it broadly so that they stood out against the lavish backdrop of the production. The rest of the cast played their parts at the level of a local opera company.A film goer who found My Dinner with Andre compelling viewing would be overwhelmed. A person who thinks that doing DisneyWorld and Epcott Centre in the same day is a relaxing day of vacation would have found this fine entertainment.

I was unimpressed. There are better films about the Titanic than this, which are deeper and covering more of the history around the event. This, however, was merely a soap opera in the Titanic setting.
LadyJesusFan77 7 11/19/2009
I didn't see this in the theater, but I did see it on video, and I only watched it because an acquaintance of mine kept saying how great of a movie this was, so I borrowed the video. I can honestly say I didn't have a very high opinion of it.
Automatt 11/19/2009
Yes, clearly this movie was awful. In the initial reviews, the critics hated it.But for some reason it grossed 1.83 billion dollars at the box office, more than any other film has ever made before or since, and won 11 academy awards -- including Best Picture and Best Director -- more than any other movie since Ben Hur.So James Cameron knows a thing or two about making movies.

I totally love this film. It is a very sad and moving film. The ending always makes me cry.

Frankly, "Titanic"'s defining moment has nothing to do with the love story, nor the villain's deaths, not even in the sterling production values...The one moment when it finally punches through all of the blockbuster hype, Cameron's technology fetishism and Hollywood cliches is in the scenes as the ship is going down: The images of glassy-eyed dead babies clutched in their dead mother's arms, floating in an uncaring, freezing sea caused all of the swooning, blathering Leo-struck 14-year-old girls in the audience to suddenly shut the hell up and grasp that an enormous tragedy had occurred, in the real world, to real people. Nothing else in the movie approaches that moment. In all other aspects, the movie is nothing more than a gigantic soap opera, James Cameron's blatant attempt at a "Gone With The Wind"-style romantic Hollywood epic. Fail. Watchable only for the spectacular imagery.

After watching this movie i figured out what hell really is its this movie and your strapped down eyes pryed open and your forced to watch it over and over again for all of eternity

Great movie, crappy ending and NO I don't mean the ship sinking.

Every ploy that can be used in the movie IS used and intelligent and discerning moviegoers, expecting a good movie considering how much Cameron was given to make this thing, we had every reason to expect that it would be GOOD, are consigned to the fiery pits of hell for three hours. Whenever Billy Zane came onto the screen, I felt like I was expected to bristle, hiss and boo. Likewise whenever Kate and Leo appeared, I was supposed to sigh, sniff back a tear and reach for the hand of the person closest to me, even if I didn't know them. Their tragedy became OUR tragedy. Puh-leeze! This movie had all the subtlety of being slapped in the face with a frozen turkey. The poor boy-rich girl plot and verbal fireworks were done much better with Han Solo and Princess Leia. At least those two did something heroic, like saving the galaxy! The same can't be said for Leo and Kate who confined their action to the back seat of a car..
statman100 04/04/2007
Delivers on what it sets out to do. Dialogue is corny and the love story is hardly believable, but it is incredibly well crafted and the overall story of the Titanic is brilliantly told.
BlueOrchid 01/28/2006
It's a good love story but I erase a star for having a song that gets stuck in my head and plagues my mind.
GenghisTheHun 10/24/2005
"Get the gas masks, Martha! Here comes a stinker!" I guess being a chick flick is Hollywood's answer. This was completely implausable in the class-ridden British society of the time.
Rocket Robin Hood 04/29/2005
Dumb, dumb and dummer. Don't seem to see the director making anything these days so maybe there is some justice in the world. A rip-off, Super 35mm is just another version of the cheap Superscope that came out in the 1950's. Only good fim shoot in that process was Vera Cruz.
RealityChick 04/09/2005
Sad movie but a good one to watch on a rainy day when you feel like crying.
Solenoid DH 03/11/2005
The ship was beautiful. The special effects, especially during the sinking, were breath-taking. And the plot could have been superb, were it not for the fact that these actors did not act like 1912 people, did not talk like them, and did not demonstrate the moral values of that time. In the real event, there were heroes all over that ship. But in the movie, we were treated to more of Hollywood's class warfare mindset, making it appear (falsely) that the rich people were kicking aside the poor people. Another point: why does Hollywood think there was no second class on the Titanic? Everyone was first or third. But the movie did put my wife in a romantic mood, which is more than I can do, so I'll always appreciate that.

I luv this movie..my absolute fav movie..leonardo is so frickin hott...luv him !!!
sfalconer 03/05/2005
This movie was about 2 1/2 hours to long. I cared more about the ship then the useless made up characters that brought very little to the plot. Most over rated picture of alllll timmmmeee.
Maomania 02/27/2005
This movie is way overrated. It is a good movie but not sensational. Why all that hype? I don't get it. I hated the Leonardo/Kate storyline. Just an average love story. The effects were very nice, and the stories around the two of them were touching. And it is way too long for my taste.
hpluba 02/12/2005
I can't believe this movie is so underrated. It made me cry badly at the end! I do care about what happened to the Titanic, but the charactors gave life to the story. I still cry every time I watch it. (Well, nearly.) One problem though, it was a bit too long.
MariusQelDroma 12/17/2004
An especially good movie once you look past Leo to see the whole story. Like the song, hate it being overplayed, even several years after the release date. Love Cameron's attention to detail in replicating the look and feel of that time and place.
BugahaNE 12/17/2004
This movie admittedly was very well made. The sinking of Titanic was true to life, very realistic, but the romance was lame and very unrealistic. Watch it just for the history of a major tragedy. The movie was so over commercialized if i ever hear that Celine Deon song again I'll scream.
helmut 12/06/2004
I enjoyed the sequences about the ship sinking, which were mostly helped along by the bit part actors. But the main performances (DiCaprio, Winslet, Paxton) left a lot to be desired, especially Paxton, who has not shadow of acting talent.
irishgit 12/06/2004
God-awful maudlin junk. The ship should have sunk an hour earlier and saved us all the angst.
Da Minx 10/14/2004
Too long really. A rather week story line, but a fairly decent film none the less. The actual footage of the real Titanic wreck is chilling, but it made the film somewhat real.
dixxjamm 09/10/2004
Why is it that you could eat in the finest of restaurants and still have bad food? The money spend for this movie could have revigorated the economy of a small 3-rd world country. And what is the result?Love story between social classes?Yeah, very entertaining.A young Picasso on his way to America?Yeah, very realistic.A bad upper class vilain spiting on the heads of the poor?Pleaaassseee.....Ok the sinking of the ship was excellent, but who cares?Like I said, you can have crapy meals in the finest of restaurants.
BeatlesfanStev eo 07/13/2004
It was an ok alright movie definitly toooooo..... long.
LadyShark4534 07/13/2004
Great special effects, Allright artwork (I don't care what anyone says. The girl in the Nude drawing DID NOT look like Rose because Rose was a full figured girl whereas this woman was a pale skinny thing with warped breasts.) Poor acting by Leonardo DiCaprio and no mention whatsoever of the seccond class. Also, What is up with Rose and Jack bedding down after knowing eachother for two days? Hmmmm......
CherrySoda99 02/22/2004
I've seen this movie a million times. I do like it. THe concept of it is very interesting, and I like the story line. I actually like the second half better then the first, even though I like the romance thing, it gets a bit out of hand at parts. I like the drama of the other part. Makes the movie more exciting.
scarletfeather 12/18/2003
This movie is no better than a Harlequin Romance. It just wasn't that good, but it achieved a lot of undeserved popularity because it was entertaining on a superficial level.
ClassicTVFan47 11/04/2003
A terrible film that deserves to be "sunk" (cool pun fully intended!) Entirely predictable, the film, instead of focusing on the plot of the ship or the fascinating technical blunders that occured, focus on a yawn-inducing romance. Of course, the ending is obvious to anyone who knows history...but...I wrote a short story (used as a prologue in a story of my own) where the crew of the Enterprise (along with such allies as Mario, Sonic, some Power Rangers, etc.) save the Titanic and introduce the lead male character to video games and fast food, therby preventing the nude paintings from occuring. :) I also snuck in a cameo of Mr. Limpet and a reference to Ariel, Starfleet's first mermaid. :)
kolby1973 10/09/2003
The first time I went to see Titanic at the theatre, I had bought one of those 32 oz fountain drinks. I was so engulfed in the movie that I hardly drank any of my drink, and in the last 30 minutes of the movie, the bottom of my cup fell out and spilled all over my lap ! But the movie was so good I sat there in the soda and finished watching it. I can say no movie has ever touched me this much to put up with that..lol. But in any event, I went to see the TITANIC the next weekend without any accidents, and I loved it the 2nd time as well. I have seen it several times since then at home, and still never get tired of it. This is one of 2 movies that I actually loved to see Leo DiCaprio star in. The first being Gilbert Grape. I still don't have any idea how he pulled it off. I also love the theme song by Celine Dion. Excellent film and soundtrack ! I recommend the movie to all families !
tmfan1046 10/08/2003
A Five Star all the way. The Titanic won so many awards also. Great special effects. The romance between Jack and Rose was so sweet at the begining but very very sad at the end.
President -X-D 10/07/2003
I tried to watch this, I really did. But right from the start, the film was not compelling to me. Bill Paxton is one of the first faces you see, and although he seems to have some gifts of late in directing his own films, he is a TERRIBLE actor. I could see no reason at all why an ancient old lady would take a helicopter ride out to the site of the wreck in order to tell her story. What, don't you have a TELEPHONE? The story takes place in 1996 after all. Leo Dicaprio is not a bad actor really, but the love story was the usual claptrap out of the Hollywood script bin, and was completely unrealistic. How the hell this won best picture is beyond my comprehension. James Cameron's The Abyss and the original Terminator had more compelling characters and better presented love stories, frankly. Dances with Wolves (another overrated best picture) was a better film than Titanic, but I honestly think they both won best pic only bacause audiences were surprised at themselves for being able to sit thru 3+ hours of film.
Kat25 08/04/2003
Another remake, of one of the greatest tragedies of all time. I suggest you watch *It Happened One Night* to get a more accurate version of the sinking of the Titanic. Celine Dion has a great voice, but that song nearly drove me over the edge. James Cameron should take a very early retirement from directing.
kuppie21 07/20/2003
I agree with Niterider (sorta), it really is a good movie, it's my favorite movie, very romantic and great acting. It should be at #1.

people that rates this bellow 5 is retarded they should all be shot and pissed on
Redoedo 05/27/2003
This movie was definately better than I had expected it to be. I first saw it a few years after it came out, and to be truthful, judging from all the reviews, was no expecting much. I was surprised to see that not only was the movie good, but it was very good. I actually cried at the end (the only other movie that has gotten that out of me was "The Green Mile"). I thought that everything about the movie was top notch: the script, the directing, the acting, the musical score, the atmosphere, everything. I thought that most of the actors did a fine job in their roles. I had only a few problems which most others have already mentioned here: While it was a great effort, the actors just were not the sort of people I'd expect to see in 1912. I highly doubt that someone in 1912 would be giving people the middle finger. But that's not to take anything away from the actors- they all did a fine job. I'm sure it's difficult to choose actors who will be able to recreate something that happened so long ago. I thought that Leonardo DiCaprio was at his best here- he has not done anything this good since. Kate Winslet was also very impressive as Rose. And props to Billy Zane, perhaps the only actor who was able to pull off making his character "1912ish". Perhaps the movie was stereotypical (" Half the people on this ship are going to die.". "Not the better half."), but rich bigwigs usually are that way. Obviously when the boats were being filled with all the rich people (not even to the maximum capacity), there is an implication that the rich are more important than the poor. I thought that the special effects were perfect. All of the camerawork during the final sinking was very well done, but what can we expect from James Cameron? So in the final analysis, I would highly reccomend this to anyone who is in the mood for a romance. This movie is ten times better than "Pearl Harbor". The acting is great- everything about it is great. Highly reccomended!

Best movie ever made!!
RebelYell1861 05/09/2003
Back when I first went and saw this I thought it was pretty good. But the more I thought about it and after seeing it a few more times here and there, I realized that this really wasn't that great at all. Sure the boat and the sinking looked real and all that, but so much of the movie was so unrealistic and unnecassary.
kamylienne 05/09/2003
Great set, excellent effects, awesome costumes . . . . everything else, I could have done without. I have to give credit where credit's due, this was visually incredible, which is why I give it three stars. The storyline was on the nauseating side, and the main character (Rose) was just irritating. If you like sappy love stories, this is for you.
lukskywlkr. 01/23/2003
Had I been rating this right after I saw it for the first time, I probably would have given it at least four stars and maybe five. Like so many movies, it was so impressive on the big screen. The ship looked like the behemoth it was in real life on the big screen. You could almost feel the bow slam into the water after the ship broke into two pieces. Also, when the lifeboats finally turned around and came looking for survivors, it was absolutely chilling to see the people bobbing in the water, their faces frozen with a look of sheer terror. The problems I have with the film have been mentioned by other reviewers: the actors certainly don't behave like real people from the early part of the century, and a lot of the acting is wooden (particularly by Billy Zane). The film is way too long as well. On first viewing, the three hours just zoomed by, but after seeing it a couple more times, you just wish they would get on with it, and get to the sinking of the ship. The special effects were very impressive in that area. Don't get me wrong, it is a film well worth seeing, but I would recommend renting instead of buying.
Chaotician23 05/06/2002
What a sad, useless thing was created here. The acting sucked. It was porrly directed. The woman had barely any boobs. This movie totally mocked the whole concept of a boat sinking. I saw it once and had to go home and watch forty-eight hours of Back To The Future, Indiana Jones, and Rocky to clear my mind of this crap.
sexystreif 04/20/2002
this is the one of only movie I will ever give a 1 star rating and I only gave it a 1 because I couldn't give a 0! I hated it! DiCaprio is one of the worst actors I've ever seen. As you can see I don't like this romantic crap, it's ok ever once in a wile but don't base the movie off of it, it doesn't work like that! the first and only time I will ever see this movie, it made me have to pee so bad! wouldn't ever recomend it!
mrnocal 02/25/2002
After the first hour and 1/2, I was rooting for the iceberg.
Errol 02/23/2002
I have to give it a point for great special effects but this movie had problems. The two rebels who were the stars weren't 1912 people. They were kids from the 90s transported with their attitudes into 1912. Did they think they were doing Back To The Future 4? How many young ladies in 1912 do you seriously think went around flipping people off? Not only that, but it was so stereotypical. One quintessential example is when our soft-hearted hero notes, "Half of the people on this ship are going to die!" Then the "rich" guy replies, "Not the better half." All that was missing was a glass of champagne in the hand of this cartoonish character. And it may have been okay for a cartoon, but we're expected to take it serioiusly! Just before I saw the movie I saw a documentary on the true story of the Titanic. What impressed me was the courage and chivalry of many of the people who went down with the ship. But the movie totally disregarded all of that in favor of a more cynical perspective. The only "heroes" were the two spoiled brats who were at the center of it all. Then isn't it sweet how Rose, as an old woman, has refrained from any other man for decades because of her sentimental attachment to a young rebel she had an illigitimate romp with decades earlier? I'm sorry but it's just too unbelievable to be any good.
137218685 01/25/2002
this movie was horrible. it set a new low in filmic history for academy award winners, and possibly marked the point at which film reached maximum sentimental hogwash. right down there with dancing with wolves (fools). cameron has developed into a total fool, having created the rather remarkable terminator and then divorced his talented wife.
steve989 01/13/2002
This was definatly one of the worst movies I ever saw.
