Classic. Belushi, Akroyd, John Candy, Ray Charles, James Brown, Aretha Franklin, etc. One of my all-time favorite movies. Funny, great music - what's not to love? I just wish that they wouldn't have made a sequel. Awful.

My dad loves this movie. It was ok to me. I remember it featured cameos by many famous musicians. I just never really got in to the Blues Brothers.

A humorous film that's fun to watch - it's also a good tribute to many great American acts from around that time.Recommended watching for any music fans.

I thought this was pretty funny. I'm not sure why, but even with its slow progression and plain appearence, I enjoyed watching it. It was insightful and visually pleasing despite its dull look.
Belinda894 06/02/2008
Haven't seen it all the way through but sure it is good

Believe it or not, I haven't seen enough of this movie to know whether or not I like it! (That's probably sacrilege, I know!)
Spike65 05/23/2008
Five stars for the music and musicians featured in this flick. The story is a bit weak and the car crashes get old for me but it is about 4 stars overall. The Blues Brothers Band is pretty much the musicians from "Booker T and the M.G.s" group that backed up many of the greatest soul recordings of the 1960s. Also an opportunity to see Cab Calloway in action not long before his passing.
angryjed 12/01/2007
Too many great scenes to count - and the music! A veritable whos-who of great blues/soul musicians of all time: Ray Charles, Aretha, John Lee Hooker, James Brown, Cab Calloway - that's just who I can think of right now. And of course the Mother of All Car Chase Scenes.
GenghisTheHun 03/15/2007
A 5 spot for the music. A five spot also for some memorable lines. "I hate Illinois Nazis" is one of my favorites.
Silver Eagle 252 04/02/2006
It's not too often that you get a great comedy and a great soundtrack, but that's what the Blues Brothers delivers. Who ever thought you would be able to get John Belushi and Dan Ackroyd in the same movie with Aretha Franklin and Ray Charles. Comic/music genius.
doobiesNhof 03/15/2006
Great comedy, music and just plan fun. I watched it the other night and still laugh at the craziness of it all.
crhayes7 02/02/2006
this movie is so amesomely funny. i am on a mission from god to give this movie a 5

Great music with a few good lines. Another very overrated movie however.
Working-Class_Hero 09/19/2005
I wouldn't it was that funny, but yeah it has got some fine music .. i loved the kid !
CanadaSucks 06/12/2005
You either love it or hate it. As for me, I love any movie where James Brown plays a preacher and yells DO YOU SEE THE LIGHT? And the music is awesome.
James76255 06/12/2005
Did ya get my Cheez Whiz boy? Another cult classic that was panned by critics and largely ignored by audiences when it came out. The popularity of the movie has grown somewhat with time, but it's still an aquired taste. It's a bit sloppy, but the music and the silliness make up for that with me. If you haven't seen it, settle in with some dry white toast, four whole fried chickens, and a Coke and take it in some time.
crankyfrank 04/25/2005
What a train wreck! Coming after the brilliant Animal House I expected greatness, but OY! Hackneyed, stupid schlock.

Released in 1980 and directed by John Landis, The Blues Brothers is the most successful film spawned by television's Saturday Night Live. The story starts with the release of Joliet Jake Blues (John Belushi) from prison who is picked up by his brother Elwood (Dan Aykroyd) in a surplus police car. Upon visiting the orphanage where the brothers were raised, they are told by Sister Mary Stigmata (Kathleen Freeman) that she does not have the money to pay the property taxes. Now on a mission from God, the Blues Brothers are off to assemble the old band so they can have a charity concert. Along the way, the brothers receive inspiration from Ray Charles, James Brown, and Aretha Franklin (among others), must avoid Jake's revenge minded ex-fiancée (Carrie Fisher), are chased by a neo-Nazi (Henry Gibson), and elude the entire Cook County law enforcement community. This film has Belushi doing his normal thing, but is essentially made by Aykroyd's best comedic performance in a movie, the music, and the classic, over the top car chase scene through the streets of Chicago.

I've seen it 20 times and could easily see it 20 more times. Great music, comedy, action, and a nice story to boot. And what a cast! Two fried chickens and a coke coming up!
Yorthan 04/13/2004
I enjoy the music in this movie as much, if not more, than the comedy in it (which is a bit too subtle at points, not counting the mall scene.)
pennyroyalty 04/03/2004
this movie always makes me smile. Great comedy and a great team (belushi and akroyd) set to a fantastic soundtrack.
feikert03 03/18/2004
My favorite musical. It is funny, has action, and music. It is great! But, it is too long!!!
DeathRattle 01/06/2004
I never understood why so many people found this movie hilarious. GRanted, John and Dan were great as comedic actors. However, this never appealed to me as being one of the strongest creations to come from SNL or their actors. The mission just seemed to drag on. The only scene I found hilarious was when they drove the car through the shopping center. Other than that, this is a movie that gets more credit than what it deserves.
irishgit 12/24/2003
Good fun, good music, and all the car crashes you could want. Avoid the sequel like you would an HIV positive hooker.
tvtator 11/15/2003
Jake and Elwood Blues on a mission from God, the great cameos, the car chase/car crash scene and best of all the music what wasn't to like. Still as funny today as it was over 20 years ago.
DJLarrySzyms 06/17/2003
I'm 31 years old. It's been my favorite movie since 1982. Beat that. There will NEVER be another like it. I promise.

Classic in every way. Sir? Sir? SIR?! SIR!!!
Redbird294 02/17/2003
An all-time classic. I think it's a law somewhere...if you're from Chicago, you HAVE to like this movie.
CastleBee 12/19/2001
I love this crazy old movie! It seems weird to think it is now over 21 years old! This was the very best of all the SNL inspired movies (if you don’t believe me, rent “The Coneheads” eeek!). Not only that it was probably one of the very best if not the best left to us summing up the talents of John Belushi. He gave a performance here that really encompassed his unique comedic abilities both past and present and with a bittersweet hint of what might have been. I think my favorite part (and there were so many classic bits to choose from) was when the two brothers went back to the orphanage to visit the “Penguin”. When she finally has enough of them she starts hitting them with a ruler - they try to run but Jake can’t squeeze out of the desk he was sitting in and has no choice but to roll down the stairs. Pure silly slapstick, but it still makes me laugh my head off every time!
callmetootie 04/04/2001
The Blues Brothers is not a musical....not a comedy...not a classic....it's a crap! This movie is extremly long and tired. It's never, ever funny and Belushi and Akroyd can't act in this. It's like their scripts were written by monkeys on roller skates or something. Avoid at all costs!
Coyote 03/22/2001
I liked this movie a great deal. I used to watch it all the time. However, it is a shame that Belushi is dead and that Akroyd is old and fat. By the way Danny, I loved your work in "My Stepmom is an Alien".
jmerklinghaus 10/16/2000
John Belushi and Dan Ackroyd star as ex-felons on a mission from God to raise money to save an orphanage. They set out to gather the members of their (musical) band and throw a concert to raise the money. With musical cameos by Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder and others, a comparable movie would be impossible to make today. Any fan of blues music needs to watch this movie.
