Tornatore has a gift for these well-crafted, emotional films that involve love, memory, the goodness and wickedness of man, struggle and redemption. Like his other films, Cinema Paradiso is fulfilling commercial bill of fare, but if you take a step back from it... if you pull back and drop the thread for a moment as you're watching... you'll notice that it's pretty maudlin and contrived. I enjoyed the romance, the love of cinema and the nostalgia. Pretty stuff.

Philippe Noiret made a killing with this one, an academy award and a golden globe for best foreign film in 90.

Even if you never rent foreign films this worth a look. Can be found at many video rental outlets. Excellent movie.

Wonderful film that captured my imagination as a child and still today as a brilliant student of film.

Moving!!!

At the risk of incurring the wrath of those who gave it 5, I can only give 4. This is one of my favorite films, bar none, but I have to recognize the films flaws, particularly its tendency to drag in the middle, during Toto's teenage years. That being said, the rest of the film more than carries the day.

An excellent film about a boy's lifelong friendship with a man who runs the cinema in his small hometown. The ending almost made me cry, and I NEVER CRY AT MOVIES.
