Gallipoli 5

Mel Gibson was a talented new young actor in this, one of his first major films when he was still "Australian"! The story is touching and the music is fantastic, in fact if I remember rightly, the theme song (which never, ever leaves your head) became a hit back home in Australia.

Gallipoli 5

Peter Weir Australian made this flick with a young Mel Gibson. Two young Aussies are in the ANZAC forces that fight in the Gallipoli Peninsula disaster. The Turks almost blow them back to Australia as the singer notes in the song, "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda." Hard to watch as you cringe over such waste!

Gallipoli 4

Very good, very powerful, but it bogs down in places. This is a gruelling test for the psyche, however, and not exactly War Movie Mark I.

Gallipoli 4

Not too far off 30 years old and not really showing its age. One of the better war/anti-war flicks and one of the better films to come out of Australia, in my opinion. The battle scene at The Nek, in Turkey, is one of the most demonstrable of the conduct of the Great War - 150 boys slaughtered in little more than an eye blink, then another 150, then another. No heroics, just dead people.

well i also would give this film a 4.5, but that wasn't an option. A 4.5 due to the horrible, sudden outbursts of ear-piercing, proto new age syntho-rock. it was too good of a movie to let that ruin it though.

If four and a half were an option I might have given it that on the off-chance there's an even better movie out there. But four is just too low. Excellent film.

Outstanding. This movie was much more powerful for me than either Platoon or Saving Private Ryan. It is the story of a couple of Australian sprinters who are sent to the unwinnable battle of Gallipoli. There are some really chilling scenes of how men act when they know they are facing certain death. Do not rent this if you are looking for an uplifting movie.
