Classic Kurosawa (spelling Nazis back off) that inspired numerous filmmakers. . .it is dated, but a must for the cinema-phile. . .

A timeless classic and influence on many modern film makers. I first saw this movie at an art house in Balboa, California and still consider it to be Kurosawa's best work. The subtitles could use an update to reflect current culture, but regardless it will forever have it's place in cinematic history.

This movie has everything you could want from a movie. Drama; comedy; fight-scenes; even a little romance. This movie is long but to me it serves a purpose. This movie is a good introduction to medieval Japan. It reveals the interrelationship between two different social classes, the farmers, and the samurai. The different samurai are fascinating to me, and I wouldn't have minded if their characters wear explored a bit more. I want to know more about the silent masterswordsman samurai Kyuzo, but oh well. This is an excellent story and it's told in a way that makes it enjoyable to watch again and again. There can only be one best movie of all time. Why not this movie?

This film is Kurosawa's masterpiece. It's even better than his 1985 movie, "Ran."

A magnificent cinematic achievement. For those who find it too long or have trouble reading the subtitles, I recommend watching the U.S. remake The Magnificent Seven the day before. The plots are similar enough and Kurosawas direction and the casts acting is so good that if you have difficulty with the subtitles you won't lose track.

Hey, im only 15 and I think Seven Samurai is the best film ever. I wish more people my age would watch it. I would hate for this film to be dubbed, It would take all its charm away. Everyone should stop whining about how long it is and how much reading there is. First of all, to fit all that great story into a movie, it has to be long. Second, if you dont like reading all that, to bad, you probly need to read more anyways. I give this movie an A+, go ahead and find a better foriegn movie, I dare you...

I hate to admit it, but I never got into Kurosawa. I know how many movies this influenced, so that gives this movie its due, but for sheer visceral appeal, I was only mildly entertained, since I already saw Magnificent 7.

Considered to be one of the very best movies to ever come out of Japan, but I found it a little tedious. Some of the fight scenes are great, but it went on too long for me to really enjoy. When you are trying to watch and read at the same time, a three hour running time is hard to take.

Best movie ever made. Direction- perfect. Acting- perfect. Music- perfect. Great action, comradery. First 10 minutes after intermission are my fav. ten minutes in cinema. Good introduction to foreign films. Wish Kurosawa was still alive, making movies.

Even at 3 hours long, this celebrated adventure,in which the eponymous warriors defend a village from bandits,is probably the perfect introduction to "foreign language"films;the characters superbly drawn and acted(Mifune and Shimura outstanding),the pacing masterly, the story itself never less than fully involving, the editing and choreography in the extended final battle scenes superlative. There's even a touch of romantic lyricism thrown in for good measure. For once critics and public are united in their admiration- for Kurosawa's all-time top 10 masterpiece.

Akira Kurosawa wanted to make a film that was, in his words, "good enough to eat." He certainly accomplished this because SEVEN SAMURAI is one of the most entertaining movies ever made, if not the most entertaining movie of all-time! It's all there, the technical mastery of Kurosawa, the steelar performances of Shimura and Mifune.....there is too much to say! This film is so good, I can't possibly display my affections for it in one of two small paragraphs. The greatness of SEVEN SAMURAI is beyond words.

Who keeps giving these movies 1's and 2's??? There are very few films that surpass SEVEN SAMURAI, in the entire history of filmmaking. It is surely Kurosawa's best (OK, so maybe not surely; RASHOMON is pretty spectacular as well), and it puts to shame the overhyped American "classics" like GONE WITH THE WIND and A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE. Watch it! And watch all the other great foreign movies! If you don't, you're missing out on a treasure trove of genius.
