It was O.K. but the picture was so dark it was hard to tell what was going on in much of the film. I felt like I needed to jack up the contrast.
Haji849 07/22/2008
without Jack Nicholson this movie would not have been as good.

Never liked the cartoon but I love all the movies!
Kusheil-Lover ™ 07/22/2008

This film has gotten pretty decent reviews and ratings on this list so I may offend some people with my review but I remember how hyped this film was back in 1989 but I HATED this film and will not watch another Tim Burton film ever again. I have no problem with trying to give this film a cold, dark gritty feel but it doesn't come across at all, rather it looks like a film that was filmed on a cloudy day or in darkly lit studios while alot of the sets which minature models were used during the film's production look like minature models in the film. The script is terrible, while the film's's overall look and feel is very shallow while Jack Nicholson's portrayal of the Joker is the only decent part of the film. But my biggest problem with this film is I think its too scary/gory for kids (like the scene where the Joker electrocutes a guy buy shaking his hand with a glove). In Belgium or some other European country this film was given an adults only rating. Again I understand giving the film a dark gritty feel but if you want a film with a gritty feel that kids can watch, check out Batman Begins (which I feel is a far superior film and the strongest of all the Batman films) or a sci fi film like The Empire Strikes Back.

Great film. I got bored in a couple parts, but not for long. Overall I would say it's far above average, but not quite perfect.
sfalconer 03/13/2006
Another Tim Burton mess. The thing that amazes me about all the recent Batman movies is that the main character is the villain. In this case the Joker played by Jack! The movie is so dark and the casting of Michael Keaton still boggles the mind. I found it to be very disappointing.

A great movie!
DeShaddow 07/25/2004
This movies makes you fall asleep. I'd rather watch batman fight and do his moves in cartoons. What I did like was the set, the costumes, and the score. The rest could've been alot better.
irishgit 12/20/2003
Wooden performances, (except for Nicholson, who is too far over the top even for him), a weak script and just average everything else.
JimmyInAtlanta 06/24/2003
I thought it was lousy. Prince music and Burton don't mix anyway, let alone with Nicholson and Batman. Made me want to meet the producers and find out where I could buy the pot they must've been smoking when they thought this was a good idea. Keaton as Batman? And THEN, he tells Vicki his secret identity! Ceeeerap!
resisobilus 04/04/2003
Holy Hollywood Hell! I love Tim Burton's work when it suits his mindset, but this was all wrong. And Michael Keaton! Like casting John Wayne as Attila the Hun. And will somebody shoot Robert Wuhl, please?
Redoedo 03/02/2003
One of the all-time great Superhero classics. Batman truly delivered, with an amazing cast for one (espescially with Jack Nicholson as the Joker), and Michael Keaton did a surprisingly good job as Batman. Kim Basinger was lovely as always. I loved the action and how Tim Burton tried to stay as true to the comic books as he could while still making Batman seem real. A good film!

A very good superhero movie, but I don't prefer it over the first Superman, the X-Men or Spider-man. There are a couple of problems I had with the film. First, Jack Nicholson. He's won award after award and good for him. Me, I have never found him to be that great. He's completely overbearing and over the top as the Joker. It's almost like he's trying to out-do Jim Carrey at his own game, which is onscreen stupidity. Also, the whole look of the film in general is too much. It's so outlandish, it's practically unbelievable. They should have focused more on the story and told how he became Batman instead of waiting until the third movie to do that.
oldpompous 12/03/2001
Overrated twaddle. Okay, the art design is kind of interesting, but art design can't carry a movie, not with the vaudevillian turn of Nicholson (in full self-parody mode). I have to admit that Keaton was good in the title role, but...
MedgarEvers 09/16/2001
I don't think this one was ever topped by "Batman Forever," "Batman & Robin," or maybe even "Batman Returns." Jack Nicholson was of course perfect. Tim Burton makes an interesting film here: a comic book generally for children made into a gritty, dark, cold film with some true great action and acting. I can smile just like Nicholson's Joker. I should really buy this one. "Ooh, I got a live one here!"
callmetootie 04/05/2001
I'd say the 2nd best in the series. Micheal Keaton does the best Batman. He is just so powerful and he looks so much like Batman. This one was pretty good because Jack Nicholson did a good job as the Joker. The make-up effects were awesome.
Teaseress 02/01/2001
I think this was the best out of the Batman films produced. Tim Burton injected the correct atmosphere and the characters were fantastic. The second followed its example and was outstanding. I think the others make a mockery of the concept of Batman, therefore Batman and the second one will always be the best original ones.
Hot Sexy Island Girl 01/12/2001
I think Batman was cool. Jack Nicholson was awesome as the joker. It was a perfect role for him. Kim Basinger was also great as Bruce Wayne's girlfriend. Michael Keaton was an excellent "BATMAN."
Mandy M 01/11/2001
Batman was one of my all time favorite movies because of its originality and also its classic comic appeal. I grew up with Batman comics and the movie portrayed a comic book feel. This is why I think it is an original movie also.
Warrior 01/03/2001
Eventhough this film is based on a comic book, this movie was outstanding. It captured the story of the comic book well and it also captured my (as well as my friends) eyes. It is suitable for almost all ages, which is a plus.
Aquafish 01/03/2001
Tim Burton's adaptation of the classic comic, revives some hope for the comic book to movie genre. He completely captures the image of the brooding "dark knight" on a mission for justice. No film can succeed if it remains 100% accurate to the comic but Burton keeps the important aspects of the legend alive changing more trivial things like costumes to make a quality film.
KEVBO821 01/02/2001
Batman has to be considered an absolute classic. A movie that uses just enough of the comics but combines real life attributes to make Batman seem almost possible. A cast including Michael Keaton, Jack Nichalson, and Kim Basinger make the story one to watch. Keaton delivers big here, and of course, Jack Nicholson as the Joker steals the show.
Zarbon 12/30/2000
Probably the best movie to come from a comic book! It was a lot better than I had expected. It's a nice movie to see, but it's not a masterpiece. Lots of innovation. Innovation is good because it offers something new. But not as appealing as one would hope for.
chrise 11/27/2000
Batman has so many movies. I liked this movie a lot.
JMalkovich 11/24/2000
This is the best movie of all time. There was a lot of action. Lots of suspense. I was impressed.
Legacy 11/24/2000
Micheal Keaton did the best job of portraying the comic book character. The director kept the original aspects of Batman while giving new character and flavor. The first of a four part series, this one set the tone for the rest. Jack Nicholson does a classic performance as a villan. Special effects added to total fun.
gildum 11/21/2000
The original Batman starring Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson was perhaps the best one out of its series. I still remember the long lines in front of the theater when the movie first came out. Every kid who knew about Batman wanted to see this movie.
gretchen 11/21/2000
Batman, the original, is pretty freakin' cool. Urban killer clown guys on motorcycles; does it get any better? BatCave, split personalities, cool cars. I like the movie, it uses a darker version of comics and TV show versions.
jassozx 11/20/2000
Batman is one of those classics that I will always remember. Too bad the Batman movies only got lost, but Batman is on top of the charts.
OneLuvKP 11/20/2000
I really liked Batman because he flies in the air and he helps people. I like it when Batman fell in love. All the kids like it too.
TheManOfSteel 11/20/2000
This was a really good movie for comic book fans. The Dark Knight finally came to life on the movie screen. As for the other Batman films, this was the best. I didn't like the others as much as the first.
BigPimpin 11/17/2000
Batman was the bomb when I was little. How they made the whole movie was great. I think that Batman is a movie that will never die.
twotson 11/16/2000
Batman was great. It was a great movie. I had fun. It was the best.
whitesatin 11/14/2000
This comic book type action movie- in fact, the entire Batman series- shows great insight into how and why the title character became who he is best known for. From the first film on, the viewer is invited more and more into the troubled but good natured life of a millionaire crime fighter, which is good for connecting with the character. What I also like is the fact that Batman was one of the first comic book heroes to rely on technology, not superhuman powers, to combat the growing criminal element of his home city.
nicnik 11/10/2000
Batman was a good movie, but the sequels were great. It still gets props for being the first Batman.
greenwizard 11/10/2000
Tim Burton's recreation of the classic comic introduces Jack Nicholson as the sinister Joker. One of the few superhero movies to actually do justice to the original.
mestrebj 11/08/2000
Batman was just one of your typical superhero movies that you can enjoy. I thought that Tim Burton did a good job on emphasizing the darkness of Batman's character.
anwar 11/02/2000
This was the least cheesy Batman movie, but it was still pretty cheesy. I wanted to be Batman ever since I saw it. The costume was stupid though.
ctom 11/02/2000
It was the best out of all the Batmans. Michael Keaton was the best Batman. Jack Nicholson was great as the Joker. Loved the smile. Pretty good intro. to Bruce Wayne's background.
lilone 10/31/2000
I grew up watching the Batman TV show, so I enjoyed the movie version. The movie was very entertaining and the effects were great! I like to watch movies with detailed costume designs. Shows the effort and is key to the whole movie- very good!
Trone 10/30/2000
I was excited about this movie coming out but I did not like the dark portrayal of Batman.
gte42525du 12/05/1999
The first Batman movie is by far the best. Michael Keaton is the best man for the part
Chun1618om 11/26/1999
Just a classic story about a superhero getting his woman. Great.
