I watched Roger Ebert when he threw a harpoon into this whale, but with the twist and all, it isn't that bad. It is confusing, especially if you have been into the grog.
Loganz 11/17/2007
Amazing movie, one of my al time favs
Victor83 07/19/2007
One of the best movies ever. This one has been mimicked and lampooned. Great cast, superb acting, and a plot with several twists and turns.
CanadaSucks 07/19/2007
Without question, it's overblown. . .but it's still a good ride with a decent cast. . .Kevin Spacey before he really became famous. . .
fluffytuffy 06/28/2007
I love Kevin Spacey, he is a great actor, and this movie really showcased him. It was a great action/mystery story that just sweeps you along to a 'surprise' ending.
jrhoust 03/31/2007
Loved this movie one to the truly great ones.
Drummond 12/31/2005
I figured it out pretty early in the movie (kind of obvious if you think about it), but it was still fun to watch it unravel.
decalod85 12/04/2005
Great Movie. The final scenes of the movie are fabulous. I even liked the Baldwin brother in this movie.
Limpin' Trenchfoot 12/02/2005
Excellent stuff. Tarantino should take tips from this on how to make a quality action thriller. Top performances all around. As for the comment from jerricabenton...yeah..sure you had it all figured out!!
jerricabenton 11/28/2005
There are some good parts, but it was predictable. That's right, if you didn't figure it out, you are a MORON.
irishgit 08/18/2005
A brilliant script, spectacular performances from Spacey and Byrne, career performances from everyone else. One of the best movies ever.
musicprof 08/13/2005
If I could I would give it 6 stars! This movie was just awesome. Granted, it is not for people who don't pay attention. The twists and turns will leave you in the dark if you don't or can't use your head for more than a hat rack. Spacey, Byrne, Stephen Baldwin, Chaz Palmenteri, and even Del Torro were all grat in this movie. One creative script. I love it!
boxingwiz-mr.right 08/11/2005
who let this get so high up the list?

One of the great ending of all time (Seven beat it).
Supercross 04/05/2005
A very good action/thriller with a strong cast. This is a movie which requires you to pay attention in order to fully understand the ending, which is a great twist. This film is Benicio Del Toro's breakthrough role, in which he plays a character that will give you a few laughs. Overall, a strong thriller, with a good cast and a superb ending.

I bought this movie on DVD without watching it on my brother's suggestion. He talked so much about this movie being one of his favourites, so I thought it was going to be great. The first time I watched it, I was dissapointed with the entire movie, except for the ending of course. Then, I watched it for a second time, and everything came together. With the knowledge I had of the ending, it made the rest of the movie so much better. Now, it is one of my favourites. I say I have watched the movie over 20 times, no joke.
Daccory 10/05/2004
Kevin Spacey stands out amongst an exceptional cast. Brilliant.
numbah16tdhaha 07/27/2004
Fantistic cast, twists and turns that can make you dizzy.
DeShaddow 07/25/2004
This is a smart movie that fools you until the end. Excellent.

The Usual Suspects like Fight Club is one of those movies that you can't digest once. You have to watch it again in order to catch references that may have been previously overlooked. A well written almost flawless script based on a simple setting of a band of criminals who meet after a police line up furthering their career to a successful heist catching the attention of Kyzer Soze. Using flashbacks, cross-cutting and Kevin Spacey's clear and intricate narration we see the ending of this film and why it makes it one of the most engaging, skillful and intelligent movies in cinematic history.
Jamie McBain 06/24/2004
Great film, and well made too.
JagDeepView 05/01/2004
Superb! A most deftly created intricate storyline coupled with fantastic acting and character development, reminiscent of older Coen classics, better than most of the over-rated Tarantino yarns... kudos to Bryan Singer, Byrne, Spacey and the rest of them, a masterpiece from beginning to end, especially the end.
eddill 04/15/2004
A favorite of mine. Great acting throughout.
VirileVagabond 02/13/2004
Released in 1985 and directed by Bryan Singer, The Usual Suspects is a complicated, modern film noir which revolves around a group of small-time cons who get caught up in the schemes of the mysterious Keyser Soze. The film is told from the perspective of one of the two main cons Roger Verbal Kint (Kevin Spacey) who is being interrogated after the events by the police. Kint relates how the action started when the usual suspects were brought in for questioning regarding a theft of gun parts. The story then winds itself through how he, Dean Keaton (Gabriel Byrne), and the rest of the gang continued to get pulled deeper into the surreal world of Keyser Soze until ultimately nearly everyone but Kint is killed during a boat heist. The movie climaxes with one of the most original twists in cinema. This film works so well because it is superbly cast (save for the exception of Stephen Baldwin as one of the gang), it effectively uses a non-linear format, the action is sporadically paced, and the entire aura of the movie is dark. The bottom line is that The Usual Suspects is a mystery film that easily survive repeated viewings and was a landmark release for the 1990's.
DeathRattle 01/29/2004
This is a solid movie all around which features a great acting cast ensemble. When watching this movie, you will know why Kevin Spacey won an oscar for his role a Verbal Kint. The movie has a very well- written plot line with a grest twist-ending that manages to fill in all the questions asked in the beginning of the film. Bryan Singer, director of the two X-Mex movies and Apt. Pupil, has proven that he could become a very big name in hollywood in the future.
astroboy 08/15/2003
This is a throwback to the 50s and 60s.One can almost imagine Humphrey Bogart in this. Bryan Singer did an excellant job with this movie. One of my all time favorites this should have taken the Oscar for best picture.Twisting and turning constantly this is a movie that gets better with repeated viewings.
Kennit 07/20/2003
Latima duma Kaizer Soze! I loved the bulletin board scene that tied everything together. Verbal's scene right afterwards just makes the film (although the telling of Kazier Soze is pretty damn cool too).
sharpshooter 06/17/2003
i hate these kind of movies
kamylienne 03/19/2003
IT's a lot funnier if you have the DVD and watch the commentary on it--you'll find out that, in the lineup scene, when they're cracking up, it's because one of them had a nasty and apparently loud case of gas. That little bit of knowledge just makes the whole scene a million times better! Otherwise, the movie was alright; I enjoyed the intricate story telling by Spacey (that's an old idea, but it's pretty well done). Spacey's performance is excellent. But, it drags on and on, and it's a little hard to sit through, but it may be worth watching for some, but it's not for everyone.
marc780 11/19/2002
I couldnt even sit all the way through this clunker, so maybe my opinion isnt that valid. The movie just doesnt work, I found it unwatchable
Jason1972 10/30/2002
What good movie this was, I'd hate to piss of Kaiser Sousae!
Noerf Spacey Carter 01/30/2002
If you have not seen this movie yet, WHAT ARE YOU DOING ON THE INTERNET? This is the best movie ever made. Superb acting, writing, score, everything. It will throw you for a loop, then another loop, then another. It unfolds like a great novel, and demands a repeat viewing.
h_dawkins 01/23/2002
what a classic!from the gripping storyline to the ultimately cool finale this film will rest in your imagination for a long time. Kevin Spacey is magnetic and along with some good support, this makes a classic film noir / thriller
pineywoodsslim 01/05/2002
Great script, great cast, great production. This is the movie I never hesistate to recommend to people. Oscars for Best Original Screenplay and for Kevin Spacey for Best Supporting Actor, were well-deserved. See it!
Shroomwoman 12/17/2001
I haven't a clue as to why "The Usual Suspects" received such positive reviews on RateItAll and the Internet Movie Database (where it's ranked #14 in the top 250). In my opinion, the movie was confusing, manipulative, and, at times, boring. The plot didn't strike me as being particularly innovative, and the acting was just OK. I do love Kevin Spacey, though, and it was fun to watch him perform. I really must be missing something here!
loki13 11/14/2001
A very well written movie, the cast really fit the part well and the acting was great.I liked the ending and how it all came together.
Jimi Shouvani 10/26/2001
This movie is a perfect example of how terrible new movies are compared to the older real classics. I agree this is a good movie for the 90's and 80's, but it's a really bad film compared to the movies made 30 to 70 years ago.
Lord of the Waves 10/20/2001
Awesome movie. very suspensful. its a one of a kind movie. if you havent seen this then i suggest renting it. kevin spacey's best ever.

jbiscuit1 06/19/2001
One of my favorite movies of all time, this film noir mystery/action movie could not have been done better. Gabriel Byrne stars very well in this film, but he is also excellently supported by Kevin Spacey, Benicio Del Toro and Kevin Pollack. The plot was very near flawless, and the setting was excellent. The characters, while not being deep, are more than adequate to carry the movie through to its finish, and Bryan Singer did a wonderful job with the direction. While the mystique surrounding this movie may cause a new viewer to predict the ending, now, I found the movie to be unpredictable and brilliantly finished.
NYrhapsody212 06/15/2001
I finally saw this movie and it was awesome!!! I think what put the icing on the cake was Kevin Spacey... he played his character so well I think I'm gonna name my dog Verbal.
