The historic points were too overshadowed by the racism.

I'm so happy for the girl when she learns to read. It just opens up another world for her.

great movie with some wonderful talented actors. danny glover, whoopi goldberg and oprah winfrey was a natural. the best part was when whoopis character finally stood up to that mean husband of hers. you could only cheer her on as she got stronger

Underrated 80's movie- terrific acting. A powerful drama. The fact that it won zero Oscars is still one of the all-time embarrassments of the Academy.

I love this movie since almost every movie whoopi goldberg plays a role in is great :-) However it is very sad but I like such movies

Touching movie but hard for me to watch b/c of the abuse/violence. I have a hard time watching these kinds of movies.

I cried! - this says a lot for me!

Excellent movie. Everyone did a great job, Oprah, Danny Glover and Whoopi Goldberg. Sad movie, but I enjoyed it. It makes me happy that we are not living in the early 1900's...

Great movie !!! Even I shed a tear or two in this movie, especially the scene early on when the sisters are separated as young girls, not to see each other again for many years.

This is probably the most moving aspiring and most touching, riveting, movie I have ever seen! It's the life of a poor young black woman (Whoopi Goldberg) who's sold off into a marridge where her own kids and husband hate her, but soon this woman makes her own living and makes her own revenge and prosperity. I reccomend this movie to everyone.

An outstanding movie, just as good as the book, with great performances and beautiful cinematography. Steven Speilberg should have won an oscar for this movie, because it is one of his best. Thumbs up on the casting!

Steven Spielberg should have at least been nominated for an Oscar for this movie. This movie is disturbing, but important in understanding our history in a realistic way.

One of the most unforgettable and beautiful films of the last generation. Vivid portrayals all around, and writing that brings the pain, poignancy and joy straight to your heart.

A movie that I could watch over and over and over. I loved Oprah in this. Whoopi was excellent as was Danny Glover. A real life picture from the african american view in the early 1900's.

A really beautiful movie. Whoopi Goldberg was spectacular. That first time she smiled, when Shugg Avery was there, it made me cry. She was so raw, so real. I think that is possible the best acting I've ever seen. She did a wonderful job in very few words.

Whoopi was really good in this movie. I love the way she made her eyes sparkle with joy (even though she was just acting) when she smiled. She's one of the best. Looks like such a nice woman and friend. I'd love to meet her.

made me cry - that speaks volumes

Whoopi's first and best performance. A touching movie performance, the best of it's time.

Best movie of all time! Everyone who is a human should watch this mvoie! It's history, love, hate and victory all in one movie.
Mucosa 01/10/2001
This is my favorite movie! The story is warm and inspiring. I loved the different stages in the characters lives. I also loved the way it ended. The music was also good.

I gave this movie a five because it has a historic meaning. It gives a good picture of black women's past experience.

Oprah was great in this movie. It is a long movie but worth the wait. It is a good cultural movie about African Americans.

The Color Purple with Whoopie Goldberg is a sad yet powerful movie. It is one of Steven Spielberg's masterpieces. The cinematography is outstanding.
plumeria 11/07/2000
This movie was so sad. I must have seen it at least ten times and I still cry. The music is good. I don't know if I would have been able to survive in that time period as a woman. Whoopi did a fabulous job. This movie makes me hate men. It brings out a lot of emotions. Very powerful.
jatkurie 11/06/2000
Oprah was great in her acting and the movie has a lot of symbols that can affect our lives.
kecia 11/03/2000
It was a really good movie. Whoopi Goldberg, Oprah Winfrey and Danny Glover acted excellent in this movie. Danny Glover abused Whoopi and treated her badly, took her sister away- but at the end reunited them back together.
kiyah 11/03/2000
Oprah and Whoopie Goldberg were excellent in this soulful, spiritual film about women's relationships, love, sexuality and hardships.
Avelis 10/24/2000
I read the book last week and rented the movie afterwards. It was a wonderful adaptation of the movie.
DonQuixote 10/11/2000
It may be a movie with a mostly African-American cast, but the women in this story exist in all races and face the same choices. Whoopi Goldberg shows pain and strength. As she grows, so does the viewer. Oprah Winfrey seems strong, but shows defeat very well. The strength and importance of sisterhood is a message women need to learn and remember, but men need to see this too. You'll enjoy the film, but the book by Alice Walker is even better.
mcke3634om 07/24/2000
One of the greatest movies ever made.

I saw the Color Purple a long time ago and didn't really get it until I was older. It is actually a really moving movie. There are a lot of sub stories. It definately touches on women topics more than mens. The themes are domestic abuse, friendship, family values and many other issues. I love Oprah though.
