I've never seen this movie.

oh yes this one can be scary. but mostly unsettling. a young girl is feared to be possessed by a demon. they seek an exorcist when medical testing shows nothing. some scenes are very difficult to watch to this day. had a lot of hype and warning when this first came out in the mid 70s. good movie and good actors. just not easy to watch.

Now this is a classic of its genre. Excellent directing and performance, the story is frightening and certainly impressing. The prospect of anyone being a potential victim of the possession by the devil himself is long lasting in the memory of the viewer. stories of ugly nightmares and fake possessions were abundant after the release. Overall, a masterpiece of horror.

The devil did not want the soul of little Regan McNeil. It wanted the soul of the younger priest who was having trouble with his faith!!!It used the girl as a pawn to get to the priest.

The scene that stuck in my mind for years was seemingly one of the most innocuous at first. It was when the old homeless guy asked Father Karras, ' Can you spare an old altar boy a quarter Father ?' Later on, as we know, the demon inside Regan Mcneil taunted him by showing that it knew what was in his mind. The demonic voice, spinning head etc made little impression on me but I have to admit that scene chilled me to the bone. The subtlety of evil, one might say. People dimiss such things too easily for want of better special effects, acting or whatever. Carla Moran knows better. If she's still alive today I hope she's free of it.

why?

why was a there masturbation scene included in the film involving a Crucifix and a little girl? and the gore and blood in that scene from her private area and the language having to do with sexual references against Christ Jesus God.

Jesus The Christ spoke of satan and demons. Of course they are real (they exist) and are real enemies of God. But what does this movie have to do with what Jesus Christ taught about His enemies in the spiritual realm? does this movie match Christ's WORD about His enemies or was it a shock movie out to $$cash$$ in?

Who is William Peter Blatty? What was his motivation? To get those outside of Christ closer to His Eternal Love, Grace, and Mercy?
Or was it a clever scheme to $cash$ in?

The movie is the worst film ever made.
Jews under the first covenant don't even say God's name in Fear, Respect, and awe of Him.

Yet this movie shows a gore pornographic scene of a little girl masturbating to a crucifix getting utterly blooding while chanting curse sex language about having sexual relations with God Himself.

Not scary

I saw Scary Movie before I saw the Exorcist so it didn’t seem as scary. I was actually laughing at the parts of the Exorcists that are in Scary Movie because I was remembering how Scary Movie had made fun of it.

Can't honestly say I've yet concluded whether this is a good movie where motion picture standards are involved or merely schlock with quality production values from director William Friedkin. All I am willing to acknowledge is that, along with Jack Clayton's 'The Innocents' (a legitimate classic) 'The Exorcist,' unlike most other such experiences, is one of the few that remains still in my subconscious the most.

Only movie I ever saw that actually scared me. If horror movies are supposed to "horrify"....this one is the best ever.  A definite 5.

The voices send a chill up and down your spine. The power of the Devil is always a great movie theme.

Timeless. Weak compared to modern extreme slasher films, but in a way better. You get more psychological complex plots that appeal to more intelligent people rather than crazy sadists. A great for Halloween

This classic didn't scare me, but it was very disturbing, even for today's standards. A nightmarish film about a young girl who gets posessed by the devil...the first of its kind. This is easily one of the top 5 horror films ever made. The make up effects they used on Blair are extremely effective. They make her look absolutely grotesque and terrifying. If any horror movie is worth 5 stars, it's this one.

I never looked at green pea soup the same way after I saw this movie.

When it first came out,it caused a real media hype ruckus with folks fainting and vomiting in the theater,etc.By todays standards it seems pretty tame.When I first saw it in a Manhattan Theater with my teenage friends,we found it pretty comical.Oh well,most of the people in the balcony were laughing along with us.The people down below were scared,though...Guess it was all a matter of "Perspective" !
