I wouldn't call this a horror film, more like a psychological thriller. Kathy Bates's performance is outstanding, and receiving an oscar for her portrayal as the psychotic Annie Wilkes, was greatly deserved. But, saying that, James Caan's performance was excellent too, and i am quite surprised that he didn't receive an oscar. A very suspenseful movie, with some truly unsettling moments. I highly recommend it!

This one manages to milk a potentially limiting situation (bedridden man trapped in crazed fan's house) by getting all sorts of things to happen in such a small set from writing to exercising to book burning to ankle mauling to fighting, they fit an entire film in a cubicle and while it gets claustrophobic it doesn't feel tiresome. Both actors help by putting on quite intense performances with plenty of subtle nuances(Caan struggling and failing at not showing outside signs of the terror Kathy's presence provokes on him). Sad to see poor old Richard Farnsworth shot in such a way but it put across well the point of Kathy going to walk that extra mile to keep Caan by her side. Plus it gets me to think how some writers have, unlike here, metaphorically their creativity hostage to someone else's (public, editors, whoever's) desires and aspirations. checkout my new Secret Room >> http://shortub.co.cc

This movie was good but I have seen better. After Annie Wilkes saves Paul Sheldon, she makes his life a living Hell. She makes Paul burn his new book. And after she reads his last Misery novel, she goes Psycho. While she goes to town, Paul gets out of his room and looks around the house in a wheelchair. Annie finds out that he's been out and she shatters his knees with a sledgehammer. OUCH!!! That's gotta hurt.A lot of the movie only takes place in the house. I didn't care much for that. I give Misery a 3 star rating.
Molfan 11/01/2008
Kathy Bates was perfect as Annie Wilkes the obsessed fan of the author'Paul Sheldon's books. she rescues him in a bad accident near her home. while helping him get better { and oddly not letting anyone know he was there} she finds out that her favorite character Misery, was killed off in his most recent book. here is where she goes ballistic and shows a very dark terrifying part of herself. She is NOT a well lady while Annie is out of the house,Paul finds a scrapbook Annie kept that had news articles of people who have mysteriously died, including infants at the hosptial she worked at. what she does to him bed bound with his feet and ankles still sends me cringing. good movie. not all blood and gore which is fine with me. but for sure keeps one in suspense.
Spike65 06/28/2008
A bit low on the horror aspect but good suspense film. Kathy Bates is great as the obsessive fan. One of James Caan's better efforts as well.
ejerzeygirl 05/29/2008
good movie but as far as best horror movie mmm I don't think so

I am your number one fan. There is nothing to worry about. You are going to be just fine. I am your number one fan.
uncnc08 12/21/2007
This was good, kathy bates made this role,no one else could have done it and made it work.I remember going out and getting the book before I saw the movie,so I kind of knew what was happening, but in the book she just cut off one of his legs,I think which was bad enough, the hobbling scene in the movie is just too painful for me to watch.
primaxdonna 02/08/2007
kathy bates, as always, was wonderful in this. she made the movie.
Jeremy00081 09/13/2006
This is one of the scariest movies I've ever seen. Bates is 100% believable as a psycho with a chip on her shoulder. That's what makes this so good. It's one of my favorite Stephen King films, second only to "Cujo".
doombug 07/31/2006
Spectacular movie/actress (Bates). Hmmm, reminds me of another twisted "Bates" psyche... As others have already noted, though, this doesn't belong in the horror genre.
jaywilton 04/26/2006
Kathy Bates..definately got my attention..
OutsideBlitz 04/21/2006
Kathy Bates was A+ in this movie. The suspense really built for me when she and the author were having dinner together, and he poured the medicine in her drink. I was thinking, " Alright. He's finally gonna get out." Then, she spills it accidently.
youknownothing 01/04/2006
Like most of the King books that are translated to film, this dissapoints. A law should be past to ban his books being made into films.
drumtool 01/03/2006
really good movie i thought but i would have called it a thriller not a hooror.
echoscot 10/16/2005
Never read the book, but enjoyed this film. I am not a big Stephen King fan, but this was a good psychological thriller.
sublemon5446 10/14/2005
This movie lacks much suspense and doesnt correlate with the book much. The book is much better!!
Djahuti 08/26/2005
Real Horror, especially since this is the type of situation that really COULD happen.Kathy Bates is brilliant as an insane and obsessed fan from hell in this well made film.It is also noteworthy for the role-reversal of the usual psyhco/victim genders.
musicprof 08/23/2005
Hated the book. Hate the movie. King should have quit YEARS before this mindless drivel. Bates did OK with what she had to work with. Gore does not equal horror. Horror is an emotion. Gore is blood and guts spewing on the screen. That doesn't scare me.
dragonx187 08/03/2005
Kathy Bates played her part well. This movie was ok. Not one of King's best stories in my opinion. Good for a one time viewing only.
1JohnDoeFan 07/16/2005
Most horror movies are way too... unbelievable (literally). This movie was great because it could actually happen in real life unlike most thriller flicks. Kathy Bates couldn't have done a better job at being a pyscho bitch.
kattwoman 06/17/2005
kathy bates was brutal in this one. she played the role so well.
Kooky 4 Kirk Hinrich 06/09/2005
That was creepy,very creepy!!!
texasyankee 05/18/2005
I kept my eyes closed 30% of the time. It was scary and gross at times.
thedude25 04/15/2005
Very good and creepy movie. This is one of those things that could definately happen in real life. Bates does a great job playing a crazy woman and Caan does well at looking truely scared.
ShyNamaste 12/31/2004
Great movie, another brilliant master piece by Stephen King.
jmoney52 09/24/2004
GOOD PSYCHOLGICAL THRILLER. KATHY BATES IS MASTERFUL AS JAMES CAAN'S #1 FAN. GREAT ACTING, GREAT DIRECTING, GOOD STORY, DEFINITELY A GOOD WAY TO SPEND A COUPLE OF HOURS.
ButtonGwinnett 05/25/2004
Kathy Bates was great in this movie. A very good story.
WithThePenguin 05/11/2004
The part where she broke his legs kinda creeped me out but hey, whatever it takes to get your injured author to write a story for ya.
MeTalhed 04/17/2004
I saw this movie in the seventh grade and it is still one of my favorites. As with The Shining I liked the book better, but the movie was still great.
Redoedo 03/28/2004
Misery is a solid film all around. Kathy Bates' performance is riveting. It's truly a testament to her unique acting ability when you consider that her character went from being normal to evil and then back again several times throughout the movie. Caan is solid as usual. The movie is well-written and well-acted, with a decent flow and an explosive climax. Highly recommended.
nvr2mchofjenn0 7 08/29/2003
What a bitch! If it were me when all was done and overwith I would've tortured the hell out of her.
hill 08/16/2003
IT WAS SORT OF STUPID BUT FUNNY,YOU WONDER WHAT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN TO THE MAN NEXT.
gummocatkilla 05/24/2003
Misery was a horror movie? I thought is was cheesy drama.
BEBEBLOO 04/15/2003
This is one of the best movies! Kathy Bates was great! It was a crazy movie!
philc 03/27/2003
This is one of the few SK movies I really liked. Great story and excellent acting. Kathy Bates was magnificent and deserved that Oscar.
norman bates 03/27/2003
this was stupid not scary or interseting just boring
lukskywlkr. 10/17/2002
I wouldn't call this a horror movie really, but it's very good nonetheless. Kathy Bates is great as the sicko ex-nurse who keeps James Caan hostage. One of the better movies from a Stephen King book.
Potch1214 04/18/2002
Okay, when this movie came out, I had never seen a Stephen King movie, read one of his books, or even been into scary things. This movie changed all of that. 1) It scared the bejeezus out of me. 2) Kathy Bates will always be one of my favorite actresses just off of this role, she WAS Annie Wilkes. 3) Welcome back to the world James Caan! 4) I bought Misery (the book) the day after seeing this movie, and had read all of S.K.'s books within six months. 5) I became suddenly addicted to horror movies. I think this movie still remains one of the best I have ever seen, let alone one of the scariest. I still have bad images of Paul Sheldon's foot being whalloped by that sledgehammer. A must see for any horror movie fan!
Lukefrogeater 04/01/2002
This is one cool film. The acting is superb. The directing is simplistic but still very good and also brings along a gothic mood. Not like the novel but if it was it would have been cheesey and not as good. The suspense is amazing, after watching this film countless number of times and knowing what will happen next i'm still on the edge of my seat.
jbiscuit1 06/20/2001
One of Stephen King's best translations to screen ever. I don't generally care for his movies, especially the miniseries. However, this is a true gem. Kathy Bates is terrifyingly real in her portrayal of a psychopath, and Kahn excellently portrays the emotions of a man caught in a helpless and evidently hopeless situation. This movie doesn't contain large amounts of blood or gore, but has a very realistic and believable quality. It definitely makes my A list.
afterglow70 06/16/2001
Another one of the best horror flicks! I enjoyed this movie very much. Kathy Bates did an incredible job as the freak woman. I loved the little names that she called everyone too!
Thorne 04/28/2001
This is by far one of the best if not the best Stephen King horror adaption next to the Shinning. This movie triumphs in all catagories. What makes this movies is the frightningly realistic portrayle of Annie which Kathy Bates brings to life with a masters stroke. The rest of the cast does a wonderful job considering that Ms.Bates steals the show. The paceing of this movie is very well done. If the paceing had been done wrong, which could have happened easily, this film would have sucked. But this doesn't happen. This movie goes along on a very nice pace and keeps the viewer very interested. The suspence is great. The first time I saw it I almost passed out. I was only in third grade so it isn't as surprising. Still, this movie sends chills up my spine every time I watch it. I just imagine myself in the situation that poor guys situation...jesus thats creepy. This film is definatly recommended.
callmetootie 04/13/2001
Misery is one movie that you can't miss to see. Rob Reiner knew what to do here, and who to pick to get the job done. Kathy Bates plays a woman obsessed with this author, and when he gets into an accident, she takes him in. But, she is a very sick woman, in her mind, and she sometimes goes overboard and she starts abusing him with an axe.
Cebra 11/26/2000
Bravo, Kathy Bates
tazmiran 11/24/2000
Misery was a freaky movie. It was a psycho movie that should've not been made. I don't wanna' watch it ever again.
asong 11/13/2000
This movie was very good. I liked the book by Stephen King. I thought Kathy Bates was a good actor for the part.
dimplez 11/08/2000
The movie had a good story. The suspense level is high which makes it cool. The acting was good. Not a teen flick.
jonana 11/01/2000
This movie is a classic, at least compared to horror flicks now.
