Night of the Living Dead

I loved it as a young teenager, but subsequently grew tired of it after too many repeat viewings on late-night TV, "midnight movie" showings at the mall, and, once the videotape became available, at some of the "beer-and-shot" parties my friends used to throw. If you've seen it too many times, you become aware of the abysmal acting, and the long, dull stretches where people hammer boards to windows, search for nails, and then hammer more boards to still more windows, and then scream at each other before searching for more nails, and hammering and searching and hammering and hammering...Still, after a period of not having watched it in about 10 years, I watched the DVD edition and it was like being visited by a nearly-forgotten-but-newly-appreciated old friend. In its own prosaic, low-budget fashion, it's masterfully done, with just the right mixture of dialogue, action and atmosphere. The acting ranges from just-barely-adequate to pretty absymal still, but the characters are essentially archetypes, and we can all relate to at least one of them on some level (probably Ben for most people, maybe Tom and Judy for those who are younger; I doubt too many people like to see themselves as Mr. Cooper or the hillbilly sheriff). For its time, it was a shocking, disturbing and even brave picture, and the passage of time hasn't diminished much of its power, despite a plethora of imitations. Side note: Duane Jones, who played Ben, died of heart disease in 1988. He was also in a cult vampire flick entitled "Ganja and Hess". Judith O'Dea, who played Barbra, has her own communications company. Karl Hardman, who played Harry Cooper, recently died from pancreatic cancer. Marilyn Eastman, who played Helen Cooper, was actually married to Hardman, and was with him up until the time of his death. Keith Wayne, who played Tom, apparently committed suicide in 1995. Judith Ridley, who played Judy, went on to work in commercials. Kyra Schon, who played the little girl zombie, was actually Hardman's daughter, and is now a teacher. The house where it was all filmed has evidently been destroyed, but one can still visit Evans City Cemetery outside of Pittsburgh, where the opening scenes of the movie were filmed.
