Awesome film that is not a typical musical. The songs and dancing fit seamlessly into the film which is quite chilling at times. Definately a film for adults it has quite a bit of rauchy numbers but they all are appropriate for the time and place.

I resisted seeing this film for years because (1) I'm not a fan of "music movies" and (2) Anytime I see Liza Minelli in anything I can't get the image of Andrea Martin of SCTV fame pretending to be her singing in typical over-the-top fashion as a large bug suddenly flies into her mouth and stops her short out of my mind. Well, based on some of the positive reviews I've read in general over the years and on this website in particular recently, I finally broke down and got the movie, and it turns out to be an excellent semi-factual dramatization that takes place in Weimar-era Berlin (which, according to what I've read, was even more decadent than what they portray in the film). Michael York plays the role based on English author Christopher Isherwood, who lived in Berlin during the Weimar period and wrote extensively on it, and he's solid in the role. I wasn't sure how a 1972 Hollywood film was going to handle the issue of Isherwood's homosexuality, but "Cabaret" doesn't shy away from it, to its great credit. Liza Minelli, to give her her due, has probably never been better than she is here as cabaret performer and free-spirit Sally Bowles, and obviously was capable of giving a quality acting performance when she had the right director to reign in her worst flamboyant instincts, and Bob Fosse was obviously that director. Of course, it wouldn't have been the same picture if Joel Grey as the "Master Of Ceremonies" wasn't in it. He's wonderfully talented, and it's a shame and a mystery why he hasn't been more in evidence over the past decades. Cinematography is exquisite, and the whole production captures the ominous feel, the frenetic ambiance, of that era of heady "last-gasp" exhuberance before the monstrous darkness of Nazism finally engulfed the German nation. The final scene, as the camera shot switches from nightclub performance to intimidating Nazi audience, is chilling. A final note: I'm not a fan of musicals, but the combination of drama and music is seamlessly and beautifully done here.

One of the best musical to date. Great music, excellent singing and acting, and the story was told in such a subtle way that you almost don't get it during the movie but in the end, you see the whole picture. Waking up from the mesmorizing music and scenes of Cabaret is one real treat to all your senses.

Very good movie, where the music makes sense in the context of the plot, and isn't just cowboys putting down their lariats and breaking into song. Minelli, Grey and York are all very good, and the film is very tight. A number of excellent songs, many done with decadent exuberence, but my favorite is the chilling little anthem "Tomorrow belongs to me" which is the best scene in the movie.

Brilliant film.

First truly gay positive film to hit the mainstream - as in the first film that didn't depict gays as evil or tragic.

I rented this movie a year or so ago and had completely forgotten how compelling the story was and how incredibly well made the movie was. The acting, the production numbers, the cinematography, the historical context were all amazing. It hasn't lost an ounce of the impact it made 30-plus years ago when it was thought to be a shocking movie.

I really liked the night scene and the french twist of the film. Great dancing scenes as well. Liza Minelli is a good actress in this.

To enjoy Caberet, to have to be in the mood for a strange, funky movie. Lisa Minelli does a fairly decent job as a singer/dancer at the popular Caberet, a nightclub that the Nazis attend to one night, and she puts on a strange show. It's very colorful, but gothic at moments.

Cabaret is a classic and stands as one of the first overtly political musicals of all time. Liza Minelli is perfectly irritating as a sexy? English girl who has escaped to work as a call girl/performer in Berlin. Minelli's star persona and acting style combine to yield a personality that's too fun to resist but still somehow repugnant. Joel Gray is at his best in the queer role of eMcee with Bob Fosse handling choreography in his patented use of subtlety to evoke exciting sex. And for those of you visiting or living in New York, there's an ass kicking revival of the play on Broadway directed by Sam Mendes from American Beauty playing now.

I love this film! The cinematography explains so much detail and captures the life of the protagonists. The music, instead of how it's worked into the storyline normally in musicals, is done soely in the Cabaret (leaving out some good songs), so there is a more natural feeling. This is the only movie with Liza Minelle that she doesn't come across as just a horrible actress.
