Another blockbuster. Probably the last of the big Hollywood Musicals and it broke many attendance records when it was first released. You should have seen it on the big screen.

It's not just that I hate it. I love to hate it.

The best musical movie, I think. Loved it as a kid, and I still watch it now and then. Good script, enjoyable characters. Liked the fact that the captain was fair when it came to women. Some hillarious scenes.

I know it is sentimental...but I still love it :)
lion in winter 02/14/2007
Overly syrupy and sentimental- still a great musical and film. Andrews and Plummer do fine jobs- and the film remains an iconic statement.
Jeremy00081 09/13/2006
Well, this isn't my type of movie, but I have to admit, it does raise your spirits a little. 2 and a half stars.
LastMessenger3 07/07/2006
That was my ultimately favorite musical of all times. I wanted to be one of many kids in that movie. Everything in this movie is pure and innocent, something that's missing in the present. Very light and quite entertaining movie.
DumbBlondeCowg irl 03/18/2006
I love The Sound of Music. Julie Andrews was my first favorite actress when I was a little girl.
CherrySoda99 02/09/2006
My personal favorite musical that I've seen. I'm not a big fan of musicals in general, but I could actually watch this one all the way through. The acting is amazing, and the songs are great.
excelsior30 11/10/2005
Great music movie! It includes everthing, adventure, romance and some tragedy. This is a complete movie with fine songs that are unforgettable, I do somtimes sing "So Long, Farewell" when it is a formal parting. Truly one great true story with a lot of realism- I couldn't tell if the background hills are really a backdrop of Austria or just made up. One of the best movies these actors participated in. (Esp. for Julie Andrews, this should be the best.)
echoscot 10/08/2005
Classic film making. Nothing offensive or violent. Catchy music, just feel good all the way. If your into gritty reality, this is NOT the flick for you. If you just want to be entertained and have fun, this is the cream of the crop. I first saw it when I was about 9 years old and tole my Mom I was going to marry Julie Andrews when i grew up. She didn't wait for me, though. Julie, if you're reading this, I still love you, babe!!! You are one of my favorite things!!!!
ernesta 05/13/2005
Beautiful film. Memorable songs and gorgeous scenery.
Gentle Jude 02/15/2005
Although the movie is very long (about 4 hours) and it is a bit boring, the story line is actually quite good. When I first watched it, I hated it and fell asleep. But after understanding the WW2 background, it makes more sense. The music is very positive and well thought out. It is good clean entertainment with nothing dirty or offensive.

I used to think this was the most incredible movie ever made. But when it's shown on TV, it's not that great to me. The difference is that I first saw it in a theatre when it was new, back in the days when theatres had LARGE screens. And this was an unusually beautiful theatre, plus the sound was superb. Even though Angela Cartwright never heard of me, I was desperately in love with her at the time, so I never wanted the movie to end (I think she's gotten old & pudgy like me since then).
sljones 11/30/2004
A classic
trpnstn1 07/11/2004
Great music, even today, and to think it's based on a true story!
Zioness Esq. 05/25/2004
Fantastic scenery and vocals for the time. A beautiful movie. Back in the day when clean (you know boring) and happy endings (no heads flying off with viens dangling out...) were in. Kinda miss those days sometime.

I grew up with this movie and for a child a sweet happy ending movie is just fine. As I grew up, I still appreciate what this movie taught me when the Lord closes a door, somewhere He opens a window. As a true story made sweeter, it gives the viewer hope against our enemies.
diabolique_666 03/14/2004
i grew up with the sound of music and i think that it's one of the best musical movies ever made...it's a classic...
SalliesMan15 01/14/2004
The Greatest (no not exaggerated) GREATEST musical EVER! (tied with Mary Poppins) anyone who says Julie Andrews is not appealing is just jealous of her FANTASTIC talent. She is the best female vocalist ever to LIVE! and this movie proves it. Best Musical Best Family Film Guarenteed to delight the entire family from the little ones to the elderly. GO OUT AND GET THIS MOVIE YOU WONT BE SORRY

The Sound of Mucus is more like it. Who is the world finds Julie Andrews at all appealling or entertaining? Gadzooks, she's one of the worst: I feel like I'm going to fall into a diabetic coma everytime she comes into the frame. Christopher Plumber, a truly gifted actor who's been gravely overlooked for decades, puts in a fine performance for a guy who's hardly the song and dance type, yet he doesn't actually sing or dance much in this flick. The children are obnoxious. The story is one of those typical Hollywood based on a true story feel-good bowel movements. There are a few decent songs in the score, but most of it is your usual musical filler. This was such a popular flick when it first came out, but looking at it today, it's hard to determine why. Of course, it's bland and easily digestible family fare, but please, it's so hokey and goody-goody that you just want to barf.
tvtator 11/10/2003
This movie is so overrated and annoying to sit through. If the hills are alive with music, then I'm moving.
Heaven Leigh 23 09/23/2003
I actually had to get drunk to enjot this movie. Everyone should try that!it is definately funny that way. It was boring and bland.
Jason1972 05/28/2003
This movie is a bona fide classic. At the same time, though, it's a guilty pleasure. As a 31-year old male, it's nothing I go around spatting about that this is one of the essentials, but it is. Plus, those songs are catchy and stick in your head. "A doe, a deer, a female deer, ray a drop of golden..." see there I go again.
angusmacpherso n 03/15/2003
AAAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHH, OKAY I FINALLY ADMIT IT: It's sappy, but good!!!!!!

I always think of Pauline Kael, the movie critic, when I see this. If I remember correctly, she was working for a Chicago newspaper, and when she wrote the review for this movie, she called it "The Sound of Mucus". I guess the boss didn't have a sense of humor because she was fired for it. Anyway, I do have a sense of humor and I thought it was hilarious. The movie itself is okay, but I have never been real tolerable with musicals. Breaking into song at any given time is not natural, and some of the songs in this movie are less than stellar.
finlore 02/28/2002
Some people call it corny or saccharine -- I disagree.Remember that the movie was made almost 40 years ago, a time when it wasn't a crime for a movie to have a happy ending. The story of a nun sent to be a governess for the captain's children only to end up marrying him and escaping from the Nazis sounds like a plot too improbable for the critics -- but the plot is true! I know that, although I like it very much myself, the music is not to everyone's taste, but what music is? All in all, although it's not my favourite movie, it's certainly in my personal top ten.
Errol 02/25/2002
I'm not generally in to musicals, but this is my favorite one. I realize that not everyone appreciates the style of music presented in these types of movies. If you do, it's some of the best of its kind. But even if you don't, the movie is worth seeing for the story. The last part gets really intense. And I tend to become personally attached to those kids each time I see it. It's one of those that is best if you can see it on the big screen.
Lord of the Waves 11/13/2001
This has got to be one of the worst watses of 2 hours i have ever spent. Not only was this movie boring its songs live on forever. They are the scourge of mankind. The absolute worst. Just seemed way too phony.
travolta_lover 06/15/2001
This movie was awsume! The music was very good and the movie was very touching!
Molfan 05/02/2001
One of the best musicals. A wonderful family movie.I love the fact that this movie is based on a real family. Julie Andrews is terrific as Maria ,We love most of the songs. We have the movie and the cd. A movie about a nun who is sent to be a governess to seven children. She teaches them to sing and takes them on outings. Of course the captain and Maria later on fall in love and marry.and the family has to find a way to get out of Austria to get away from the NAzis. Good movie we all enjoy.

I love this film for so many reasons. The songs are classics and the actors fantastic. Films like this prove something to modern filmakers - you don't need sex and violence to make a good film - all you need is DoRaMi
callmetootie 04/14/2001
Julie Andrews is a great actress and great singer, but she can't save this movie for being a bit dull and stupid. The settings look kind of goofy and dull, and the scenes are set up too well.
Laughing Mushroom 01/25/2001
Maybe it's because I grew up with it, but this musical is so whole some and naive (if you can call a movie that). It kind of puts me in an idyllic state. It's kind of like a fairy tale.
Malvin 01/23/2001
Julie Andrews is amazing! Her voice and charm carry this movie. I have 2 words, Curtain Clothes. The soundtrack is fun for the whole family to sing to.
April C 01/17/2001
Another of my mom's favorites. I really like Julie Andrews, too. The story has also historical background-WWII-and it is interesting to see how it all fits. It even inspired me to find out a little more information about the real Von Trapp family ladder.
Vicky Lamb 01/16/2001
I really liked the active involment with the children. The songs were easy and fun to sing to. Even when I was younger I sang along with Julia.
Vuong 01/11/2001
The hills are alive, with the sound of music. If someone is being totally overwhelmed with the "real world," watch SOM, that would definitely bring back your sense of wonder. Check it out, made in the 50's and still extremely popular today. Now that is a classic.
Luvtulips27 01/11/2001
It's a very educational/entertaining movie for children and parents to watch. This video has captured many children's attention and many of them are very fond of it. It's a video every child should watch and learn from.
Water Lily 01/08/2001
I loved all the songs in this movie. The Captain's children were all sorts of ages, and it was easy to read and understand their thoughts when compared to your own thoughts and experiences at that age. The scenery was beautiful and the story was great.
Vanny 12/20/2000
I watched the "Sound of Music" innumerable times when I was younger. The songs are classic and scenes from the movie puts the viewers in a trance. This music movie is definitely a family movie.
Splate 12/20/2000
"The Sound of Music" is a movie that tells the story of the Von Trapp family. It is so interesting because it is set in the time of WWII and the Nazi regime in Europe. Through beautiful music and the events that occur to Maria and the Von Trapp family, we see the sadness of their situation in Austria. So many people being forced to fight a war they did not agree with.
PoorOldEdgarDe rby 10/09/2000
The hostel I stayed at in Salzburg, (that's the heart of Sound of Music country to you and me) used to show the movie everyday twice a day and that's where I saw it. As far as music movies goes I guess this was pretty good, cute if not a little hokey. Although I do often get that "These are a few of my favorite things" song in my head.
Ruby 06/22/2000
As a 29 year-old (straight) male who owns his share of punk rock CDs, I'm thoroughly embarrassed by my love for this movie. Every once in a while I'll get its songs stuck in my head. Especially that yodelling one that they use during the puppet show. But there's really not a weak spot to the whole movie (except that one song that Maria sings when she's on her way from the convent to the Von Trapps).

This is the greatest music film ever made!! My favorite since I was a kid.
MRKL250OM 10/26/1999
This was one of the respectable musical that I have seen. It incorporated joy, sorrow, freedom, and Love.

The Sound of Music was exceptionally good especially because people of all ages can watch it and appreciate its content.
