I remember taking my kids to this film when it was first released. There were very young children in the audience who were scared to death of this movie. I would recommend that kids should be at least 10 years old to view. Also the beginning of the "government is bad" era probably an artifact from the Vietnam War and still a huge part of todays standard Hollywood line. Other than that a very well made movie.

Cute, but a little too cute.
Interesting at first look, but doesn't stand up well on second glance.
It is also very typical of Spielbergs pattern of playing to cultural fads. I think that's the biggest reason his movies generally don't age well. They're like time capsules of what was popular at the time.

No other director has managed to capture the innocence of children as Spielberg has. From Close Encounters, to ET, Spielberg shows why he is one of the greatest directors of all times. The movie itself is not that great, but the acting, production and direction are flawless.

sappy mellowdrama, but some fantastic music. this is what happens when a director gives free reign to the composer to score the film "from the heart". shame that there aren't more filmmakers like this, and shame there aren't other composers like John Williams

This movie is okay, but I find it to be a tad bit overrated. A boy discovers an alien who's trying to get back home after he got stranded.

One of the most popular movies in history and I didn't give it 5 stars. I'm sorry, but when I watch "E.T." these days, I just don't thoroughly enjoy it. I didn't even think it was the best thing ever when I saw it as a kid. It IS really good, though. Captures the imagination.

E.T was a good movie. I love Drew Barrymoore in it, and it was fun seeing a young Tommy Howell as well.

It is sappy and too good to be true; however, you can take your little kids to it and not have the life scared out of them or have them wake up screaming for the next year.

A famous film that is now over 23 years old- a bit syrupy at times- and looking dated- bit still entertaining for all age groups.

Another masterpiece in Spielberg's massive collection of great titles.E.T. is an 80's icon.

Although I can see the morality issues and the fact that the family was horrible, the mother was out of control, it was a touching movie. The only problem that I have with it is the fact that it gets people thinking that there is life on other planets and to focus on UFO's. The Bible never teaches us that there is alien life on other planets, or at least intelligent life. UFO's are demonic and were created by the devil to fool everyone into believing there is no God, and to frighten people and cause divisions.

I liked it a lot when i was very young but now i find it too much for children. But its not so bad though compared to some others

Highly overrated! Boring, unimpressive, and not very engaging.

E T was one of the best movies ever. The music was great, a great plot line, and the E T effects were excellent. The scenes toward the end while make you want to cry while those toward the beginning are scary. I like the 2002 20th anniversary special edition version better than the original version.
jbiscuit1 08/06/2003
One of the best family films of all time. I laughed. I cried, and if you didn't, you really aren't human. This film goes far beyond the realm of science fiction, and touches the heart of any individual. Even today, I am impressed to see such a lasting film. No other film has ever come close to what this film attempted and succeeded at.

very good. I would recomend it to anybody. Check it out.

E.T. is an enjoyable movie, definitely a different spin on the little green men idea. Like most of Spielberg's movies, however, it is way over-rated. It is too calculating and tugs on the heartstrings too much, but it's still a pretty good film.

ET is one of the greatest, no doubt about it, but the marketing of the new DVD versions is, well, dubious. Consider: The regular DVD package contains the 2002 version and a second disk of extras, and that's apparently it. The pricier "Ultimate Gift Set" (is this blatant marketing or what?!?!) has the 2002 version, the original 1982 release, a third DVD of extras, the third (and complete) edition soundtrack CD, AND a cel and a Bhd.-t-Scenes book. I feel a bit sorry for those who'd prefer to have the original version who would end up having to buy this semi-pricey gift set just to have the version they want. Even so, either version has a ton of great extras to keep any ET fan happy.

I loved this film, it was the best ever

Steven Spielberg's best work - a classic
geminidreams 05/15/2002
THE all time classic, above everything else. It hasn't lost any of it's magic since it was first released back in 1982. It's so good, the performances. Steven spielberg and with the effects team and John williams' magic score created a classic!

We saw this with our toddler when it came out in '82. I couldn't help thinking E.T. looked like Grandma Walton. Also, he seemed to be a parody of Jesus Christ: he could miraculously heal people, he came from above, he died & resurrected, he ascended back to where he came from...I wasn't impressed by it. I also didn't like the dirty mouth one of the boys had, or the fact that the mother was so ignorant that she couldn't even see what was happening in her own house most of the time. Worst of all, by the time the movie ended, nearly everyone in the audience was weeping hysterically! No exaggeration...they were walking out the exits bawling right out loud, over that grotesque little creature.

What a wonderful family movie. I saw this for the first time almost 20 years ago in one of those huge theaters they used to have. A moving, funny, story about a boy and his friedship with an extra terrestrial. who is named E.T. the three children in the family try to keep E.T.a secret. After a short while E.T. wants to go home.so the kids try to find a way for him to communicate with his planet. Of course when they find that way the public finds out about E.T. and tries to take him so they can experiment on him.the kids and friends have to find a way to rescue E.T. and get him to the ship. this is just a real feel good movie about the friendship between E.T. and Elliot. All the kid actors are good. Drew Barrymore was adorable. this movie had me laughing.and crying.A well done movie.
PopFanForever 09/26/2001
Wondeful movie. It's just a classic the best ever made. The acting, music and direction are fantastic. A classic forever!
Chaotician23 09/26/2001
Okay, not that bad.
callmetootie 04/14/2001
E.T is still a pretty cool movie 20 years later. Drew Barrymore was so, so cute back then, and she was a really good actress too. The kid who plays Elliot was kind of annoying in the movie, but I usually can forget his annoying point of acting. Dee Wallace is still the same wholesome mom character.
Drag7303om 01/15/2001
This movie is the best movie that I have ever seen. It had a good storyline, and it also touched everybodies heart. It was overall a good movie.
Boonta23 11/24/2000
E.T. was just bad. I could never get myself to watch the whole movie. It was too boring. Better luck next time Speilberg.
PixEE 11/21/2000
While I know E.T has been taken into the hearts and home of the country, I personally find the little guy quite frightening. And while the movie does hold symbolic societal issues such as testings, treatment of clinical subjects, etc. I still hate watching it.
gumpy 11/06/2000
I loved the movie. It was a warm hearted, caring movie about a stranger from another planet wanting to go home. Drew Barrymore was great in the movie.
jisiaih 11/02/2000
One of the greatest movies ever made. Brought forth a feeling that we are not alone. Sort of like Orson Wells radio broadcast of the aliens attacking.
Munson 06/08/2000
I watched this movie again a year or so ago and it was still great. By now, everyone has probably seen it, but if you haven't seen it in a while, do yourself a favor and rent it. You won't be disappointed.
magellan 06/01/2000
A sweet movie which makes me think of childhood. Oddly, I just found out yesterday that the little girl in ET was Drew Barrymore - did anyone else not know that?
dalt533om 11/14/1999
Any movie that gets you all choked-up about a sappy alien is worth 5 stars! I'll admit it, I cried when I thought E.T. was dead.
