We had to read this in 9th grade, and I didn’t like it. Pip was stupid. Miss Havisham was just bizarre. I got through it once, but don’t ever expect me to read this one again.

I tend to like first-person narrators, and Pip is one of the most convincing I've read. The book seems really sentimental about childhood, especially when you realize that the book affirms Pip's childhood insights over his adult consciousness. But real traumas like class difference, child abuse, and family violence lie just beneath the surface.

Dickens wrote some of the greatest novels in English literature. Great Expectations, his thirteenth novel, is a masterpiece. What more can I say.

The best I have read from Dickens so far. Great characters, very good plot. I would have rated it a 5 but Dickens has a habit sometimes of putting characters in too coincidental a place for my taste. If you can live with that it is a great story!

I was in the 9th grade when I read this book and life will never be the same. Just kidding. Pip did have a hard life and he sure grew up into an amazing fellow. What a great charecter to read about and then when you read about Estella, you just feel bad for the boy because she keeps breaking his heart.

More tripe from the most overrated English author of all time.

I right now am about 90% through this voluminous work. I have to say that it is fairly simple to follow, but a good chunk of the novel is very dry and essentially unnecessary. It seems to be about 420 pages so far in that very few things have happened. All I can say is that there better be one hell of a climax, otherwise I will definitely be disappointed when the book ends. Dickens does a good job of symbolism through characterization with Pip, Jaggers, Wemmick, Miss Havisham, and Estella. Overall a good book now.

Mysterious characters and master plot. Charles Dickens knows how to tell a story. True life, heart breaking, circumstances within poverty, love, regret, revenge. A great read for people who enjoy twisting plots, things constantly alter, surprising the reader.

This book had a few words that were hard to understand, however, it was very good. I think my son should read it when he gets a little older. It teaches you to appreciate what you have when you get it, as it may not last that long.

This book is one that the reader can easily relate to. It deals with a young guys dreams and how he eventually accomplishes them. Great book for kids to read because it allows them to expand their minds.

Despite the gratuitous verbage of the novel, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was touched by the transition of Pip, the truth about his benefactor and Miss Hanisham's plight. Perhaps I wouldn't have enjoyed it if I didn't have a good teacher to help me along with it.

The movie didn't even begin to do this book justice. Dickens is a master. The numerous twisted plots just added to the read. It kept me surprised and on edge until the last page. Only complaint- two endings to pick from, neither of which I liked.

I really liked the story. The writing actually becomes a little boring, but if you stick with it, it's enjoyable.

I love classic literature. I read "Great Expectations" in my freshman AP English class and completely fell in love with it. It's one of the few classics I can recall that doesn't end happily. The relation the reader develops with Pip engrenders an affection that leads them to sympathize for Pip and hurt at the knowledge of how his trials end him up.

Great story. This book takes place in 19th Century England. It contains many subplots. All the characters have their own issues that tie in together.

The novel tells a story of the life of a young man as he searches for his true identity. The plot is a fascinating web of lives, all of which impact others. The many themes of the book and symbolism allow the reader to appreciate the mastery that Dickens had for his craft and enjoy the story page after page.

Charles Dickens is very skilled in piecing together his stories. I've never read a book like it. Great plot.

Nice story with unexpected twists and turns. I thought that it was a good tragic plot. I recommend it to high school students.

A quick and easy read that makes you feel smart when you finish. Dickens has an infectious sense of humor and one finds oneself rooting for various characters. I liked the choice of endings; a bit like the 'Lady and the Tiger' story.

I hated this book! It is too long and way too boring to read. It is defintely supposed to teach you something, but as you fall asleep on page ten, it is hard to learn anything.

I love this book! It is very mysterious and seductive. Something exciting kept on happening. I recommend this book to everyone.

To one who grew up in poverty, I have loved Charles Dickens' romantic portrayal of the life of the poor. This particular story tells the tale of one poor, honest boy who out of one kind act is given the resources to become a gentleman of stature.

Great Expectations has a wonderful story line and is a perfect classic in the fact that some of the themes underline most of what the culture embraces. The theme of a woman scorned will pass down what life has shown her unto her children and back into the world.
viajeraperdida 10/20/2000
Great Expectations is a stumbling giant of a novel. Dickens was paid by the word and it shows. After a promising beginning, the plot is soon mired in redundancy and over-wordiness. Of the two endings, the original cynical and sad one was overruled by the publishers in favor of a sappy, sentimental happy ending to please the masses.

It was a drag. A large portion of the dialogues are unbearable. Pip is annoying.

I remember reading this book for 8th grade English and I loved it. I am not sure why - but it is still one of the best books that I have read to this day. I cannot understand why people are giving it such low scores on the site.
