 | Rhapsody22 (12) 01/18/2006 | I recently re-read this and absolutely fell in love with it again. You root for the heroine so much, wishing she'd finally reach some happiness. Vividly told with descriptions that immerse you in the strict Victorian era, its a wonderfully moving, gothic romance of the time but not for the cynical at heart. Its desperately romantic in a way sure to turn some off.

 | OneHungryMonster (2) 08/29/2004 | It's a strong romantic novel showing the power of feminism. But it's not my type.

 | jmj310 (4) 05/11/2004 | Have you ever read any of those trashy, super market romance novels? Well, this is the original trashy, romance novel minus the graphic details. Once you start reading this book, it is impossible to put down.

 | scarletfeather (54) 12/18/2003 | A competent Gothic romance. Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights was far superior.

 | irishgit (150) 12/16/2003 | Leaves me totally cold. I think the Bronte's are the most over-rated writers of classic literature.

 | lil devil 11 (0) 05/31/2001 | I don't think there is any woman who cannot identify with Jane Eyre at some point in the story. Woman of all ages will find themselves identifying their own personal tragedies or triumphs with the situations Jane is put through. I found the novel absolutely delightful. I could not help but feel terrible about the conditions at Lowood, but then I had to laugh at the thought of a man keeping a demented wife in his attic. I will admit that I only read it as an assignment for class, but it was an assignment that I really enjoyed. In fact, I have read it numerous times since then. I never tire of hearing the romantic tale of Jane and Rochester or the tragic story of St. John.

 | Arcadion (0) 02/11/2001 | I am not a romantic. Just thought I'd get that out there. That said, will someone find me my own Rochester? Charlotte Bronte has a beautiful writing style that sweeps you up, her prose is straighforward yet rich. She creates a character in Jane, and also in Rochester, that you fall in love with.

 | cestlavy (0) 01/12/2001 | The greatest book I have ever read. Always improves upon reading. Main character Jane Eyre has a strong character in hard situations that has you rooting for her.

 | Travis G (0) 01/09/2001 | The chaste life of the devoutly religious Jane Eyre, who becomes molded into a sort of nun by wicked childhood institutions, shows how horrible and repressing life can be once rules and militaristic order replaces inclinations towards fun and playfulness. Like most kids, Jane wants to live a normal, playful life but religious school institutionalizes her to believe that a life devoted to God demands unending pain and mirthless acivities. This story is a good example of the heavy burden the rules of religion can place on a child's mind, before it has ever had a chance to try and figure life out on its own.

 | Squirt (0) 01/08/2001 | While admitting that I am a hopeless romantic and I must admit that this book does posses something of the romantic quality, though it lacks in genuine content. Feminists beware, if you thought "Gone With The Wind" would piss you off, wait until you meet whiny, needy Jane Eyre. Bronte is tedious, boring and utterly without talent.

 | Zarbon (0) 12/29/2000 | Loved it. Kept me interested in what was going to happen next. I'm 17 and a male and I think it was one of the greatest stories ever. I strongly reccomend it to anyone.

 | Daria (0) 12/20/2000 | Jane Eyre was a unique classic in that it's the first novel I read that really showed a realistic woman protagonistic. The easily relatable main character made, at times, outlandish events seem probable and made the novel work.

 | angel859500 (0) 12/14/2000 | One of the best books I have ever read! I have read it about a million times! I also highly reccomend Wuthering Heights by her sister Emily. Jane Eyre is superb!

 | Mimoh81 (0) 12/13/2000 | This is great if you like gothic, romantic novels. Also if you're a feninist and you like the woman to come out on top in the end. There are too many coincidences and wild story lines, but it's a good fantasy.

 | overalls (0) 11/24/2000 | The author put the character in different situations and we see how she reacts. Jane Eyre had a terrible childhood, yet she accomplished things as she got older. Out of a family who didn't love her, she was loved by a man. I just thought it was a great sotry, coming from a poor neighborhood myself.

 | Lows (0) 11/15/2000 | Classic love story. A combination of Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast. Most females can relate to Jane's plain features. There are vivid descriptions of horrible conditions at orphanages. Minimal French is needed to understand some pages (conversations with Adele). Not the typical happy ending but it is predictable nonetheless.

 | rowan (0) 11/06/2000 | Of all of the Bronte works I read, Jany Eyre impresses me the most. Wuthering Heights is annoying but Jane has a style all her own. This book speaks of nobility and honor in women, and I have a great deal of respect for that optimism. Having been to Dartmoor, I understand the depression, but it took a great deel more courage to write positively.

 | slanne (0) 10/31/2000 | Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Bronte is my all time favorite book. Plain orphan, abandoned by a cruel aunt becomes a governess, meets the love of her life and receives an inheritance from a long lost uncle. After being locked in a room, finding out her true love was already married and losing her only real friend. I first read it when I was ten and the martyred melodrama is always fun.
