Another Dickens classic (his second novel), spawning some of literature's most unforgettable and colourful characters. Who hasn't heard of Oliver Twist, The Artful Dodger, Bill Sikes (his dog, bulleseye), Nancy, Mr. Bumble, and of course, the wretched, but nevertheless intriguing, Fagin. Dickens was accused at the time of promoting anti-semitism,with what was seen as being a stereotypical depiction of Fagin. Dickens refuted these accusations by citing the real life jewish petty criminal, Ikey Solomon, as the inspiration behind Fagin's character. Solomon, who set up his own pawn shop, was notorious for receiving stolen goods.

Not Dickens' finest hour but good enough to recommend. I preferred Great Expectations over Oliver. A bit wordy in parts.

Excellent book. A great story, well written. Charles Dickens is exceptional in developing and conveying the personalities of the characters.

Wow, how sorry I felt for Oliver when the host family in London didn't want him anymore! When I read it, I felt like if I was living in the 17th century, or was it the 18th [?], myself! It really touch you! :o) Not long time after I read Tom Sawyer & expected the same out of that book. I was so dissappointed! I still doesn't know if it was because of the amazing Oliver Twist or if Tom Sawyer really was a bad book...
