ItemImageIn Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, beautiful and opinionated Elizabeth Bennet snubs the prideful aristocrat Mr. Darcy — until he helps her family avoid a potentially devastating scandal. Pride and Prejudice is Jane Austen's most popular and well-known romance novel, demonstrating her masterful use of ironic plot twists and flawless prose set against the strict social environment of Regency England. Austen is another one who I am not as crazy about as I am supposed to be. I appreciate her historical significance more than her writing itself. I would really just rather watch the BBC, Merchant Ivory or Emma Thompson interpretation of her books on film.

I gasped. I love this story. I get giddy just thinking about it. The characters, the humor, the twists! It's divine. (For what it's worth, I adore the A&E adaptation.)

Tied for favorite novel with Sense and Sensibility....I love Jane Austen, the time period and all the "rules" they had to live by, I love women like Elizabeth Bennett and Shakespeare's Beatrice and Kate who don't fit the mold of the times and followed their hearts to true love.

She is so awesome at depicting the boredom of the upper class English as well as the love story

One of my favorite books. I usually don't read classics because they are hard for me into, but this one I got into very quickly. One of the few books that I can read over and over.

This is for those who think classics can't be fun! One of the two novels I would describe as perfect - the other being Job by Joseph Roth.

Jane Austen was so supremely witty and had such insight. She is really at her best in her creation of this novel, though I admire Emma a lot, too.

A marvellous novel, Austen's best, and one of the greatest works of literature. Funny, crisp and rapier-like, it rewards the reader.

Jane Austen is incredible. She defies the stereotypes of women and men of the times, where woman can actually reason and think for themselves, and Darcy and Elizabeth can really go at it. This book is by far the best I've read in a long time.

Bingley, Darcy, Bennet, and lots of bore. This novel is written in the most illegible, incomprhensible brand of the English language ever manuscipted. Jane Austen may have written a great "soap opera" to some but I HATE saop operas, although I am not a fan of literature, this Austen novel is the worst of the lot. High School and College English professors who require their students to read this book are putting them through a version of the Chinese water torture. This novel does nothing but go around in circles, going on excursions all around England. And this 17th century English class structure is all white protestant, so there might be pride but certainly no prejudice involved. If you want to experience bad, see the movie starring Colin Firth as Darcy, this version is even worse

My favorite book ever. Don't go looking for her brooding "life is a dark abyss" here. It is an entirely uplifting Cinderella tale. Jane Austen's use of language is delightful, and Elizabeth Bennett is the perfect pre-feminist heroine.

Great characters that you care to hate and characters with strong personalities with the best happy ending. It's funny, sweet, and totally engrossing. It makes you actually feel things: annoyance, humor, etc.

An unexpectedly great novel. Most people associate Austen with dry, long British novels of the 1700s, but the witty considerations, deep insights, and interesting plot twists make this novel a winner. One of the best!

I loved this book so much I read it twice. The six hour movie is good too, and follows the plot well. You will love it if you like tons of character development with almost real characters who you can really fall in love with.

It's a romantic story, full of humor. It makes girls full of dreaming. But unfortunately, real life is different from that. It's my favorite.

This novel is not only important in a historical context, but for a grasp of middle class vs. aristocracy in a feminine context. This novel is excellently written and emotionally intriguing. It is only at the end of the novel that the title becomes clear, as the novels characters learn about their pride and prejudices and how this has affected their interpersonal relationships.

"Pride and Prejudice" offered major insight into society despite the difference in the time period. To some "Pride and Prejudice," as far as superficial aspects, was stereotypical of the classic mold of English archetypes; despite criticism the insight and thought provoking novel deserves a five.

This is an entertaining novel about one family and the mother's eagerness for her daughters to get married. The main character, Elizabeth Bennet, finds herself entangled to learn more about them, she learns about herself. In this book, things are not always as they seem and this gives the reader time to laugh and feel the emotions of every character.

Jane Austen captures the society around her characters while developing them. It also teaches about judging someone before you have ever met them. I loved this book. It ties in history, to us, and social life.

Very witty humor. The complex language helps vocabulary skills. Entertaining story. The characters are people you can easily relate to. The best of Austen's novels that I've read.

Every time I start to read this book I have a hard time putting it down. It is engaging and I can't wait for the resolution. The plot and character development are rich and insightful. Austen definitely had an understanding of the human heart; flaws and strengths. Witty.

Of all the stories and novels written by Jane Austen, THIS is by far the best. I got the humor the first time around, which I cannot say for Mansfield Park, Emma, etc. This is the absolute first book I reach for when I want to spend an afternoon reading, curled up with a cup of tea. And if you enjoy the book as much as I do, don't miss watching/renting/buying A&E's miniseries...about the closest adaptation I've ever seen...the casting was perfect.

Jane Austen's satire of English society in the Empire period is one of her best novels, employing her subtle humor. Her heroine, Elizabeth, refuses to be a dutiful and quiet daughter, and many spirited exchanges between characters ensue before she overcomes her own pride and prejudices.

A very funny story. I found Pride and Prejudice easy to read. The first few pages made me laugh. I would definitely recommend this book to other college students, but high school students (and younger) may not understand all the jokes.

Jane Austen's too-frothy novel is one reason why women are still oppressed today. The goal of the novel, "finding a husband," highlights the silly social constraints of her time. Points given for her own intelligence, points taken away for annoying the reader with boring parlor chats.

My God I hated this book when we had to do it at school. But since then I have gone back to it so many times. Witty, observative, scathing, but also funny and tender. Why couldnt our literature teacher help us see all this?
