Simply put: yelling at students does not work. I've done it. I've taught in some tough schools. Classroom management is about rewards and consequences. Speak loudly and clearly while students are being rewarded, and speak quietly and mournfully when a student forces you (as the teacher) to hand over a consequence. Students are people too. A police officer doesn't need to yell when he's giving me a ticket. The ticket (and corresponding change to my insurance) speaks loudly enough.

I never, ever, understood people who 'didn't get along' with tough teachers. I smoked, dranked, and messed around in school but I never got in the way of the teacher. . .that's why I got away with everything. It's a simple formula- mess with teacher = won't get away with sh#t. Besides, a tough teacher is a great learning lesson for dealing with a future pain-in-the-ass boss. Messing around with a strict teacher was a no-win situation for me so I simply ignored it. I think kids and parents create their own problems with ass-head teachers. Hey kids, wanna get away with it? Don't stand on the train tracks when the horn is blowing. . .

I remember having a few teachers who loved to make you feel like crap. One of them was a PE teacher who loved yelling and intimidation. He would always let you know when he was angry. The other one would love talking down to her students, making them feel stupid and worthless. Thank god I graduated when I did.

They prepare you for Gestapo bosses. UPDATE: A yelling kindergarten teacher, tboneya? There should be a law against that. Kindergarten is supposed to be fun. You were right to change his class.

I guess these can be bad, but none really stand out in my memory as far as high school goes. Just think of them as character builders.

My teachers, for the most part, were pretty cool. I was lucky. I did have a few stick-up-the-butt type teachers, and I had no problem being a smartass and showing them how incompetant they were. These types don't like it when the student does a better job than they do.

Some are like this so we don't figure out that they are incompetent.

I wouldn't be so much of a stickler for the rules. A good professor cares about imparting their knowledge to the students, not wasting time on administrative stuff. Some like to control the classroom with an iron fist, but I think a laid back atmosphere leads to more thinking outside the box, which is what employers are really looking for.
