Most believe that Kerry was more impressive than Bush in the fist presidential debate. (Add picture)

It was looking like a blow-out until this debate.

Update: I agree with Lance. A strong performance by the President in the first debate could have buried the Kerry campaign before it ever get started. The telling moment IMHO was when Bush was handed the perfect opportunity to articulate and defend the Bush Doctrine: Mr. President, why did you authorize preemptive war against Iraq? Instead of explaining that democracy and freedom is the way that we will achieve stability in the Middle East, thus eliminating the conditions that lead to terrorism, the President responded Because the enemy attacked. That's it. Any number of Bush staffers or supporters could have answered this question far more eloquently and compellingly than the President did. Instead, Bush oversimplified things (maybe accidentally, maybe not) and gave Kerry the perfect opportunity to point out that Iraq didn't attack us. A big blunder by Bush, and a major reason that the election is now too tight to call, but with early signs pointing towards Kerry. **Original Comment ** This was big. Kerry's biggest hurdle, IMHO, is getting people comfortable with the idea that he could be President. That he has the charisma, bearing, etc. to represent our country. I thought the first debate made some progress in this regards.

George Bush would have run away with this election had he not bombed the first debate. He looked rusty, unprepared and frustrated. The Kerry campaign was sliding toward oblivion and was poised to get drubbed until Bush tossed them this interception for a touch down. Kerry was then able to gain traction and re-energize his campaign. The election is a virtual dead heat now with a possible slight edge to Bush. But above all else this debate was the turning point for Kerry.

Yeah, yeah, Kerry manages to look good, sound smart, dress the part and gripe about the right topics in front of the right audiences. Well, la-di-dah! In my book he is still a rich stiff, who has been working toward this goal since before he purchased his 8mm camera to record his heroic war stories back in 1960 who cares anymore. According to the media (that know-all bunch of psychics) Bush may not come off as caring as much what other countries think of us, but Kerry strikes me as someone who is a little too concerned with it. And just who do you think the terrorists are going to respect the most - the guy who wants to proactively protect us from another 911 or the one who wants to join hands and sing We Are the World? Kerry and his ambulance chasing lawyer pal have about as much appeal, charisma and back bone as a limp noodle. The terrorists don't want our friendship - they want us dead. I'm sticking with the guys who aren't afraid to kick their collective asses for it.
