I actually read this twice . . . once because of interest in Japan; once for a reading group. I thought it had interesting information about a particular period and a particular way of life in Japan.

I LOVE this book. It amazes me that a man wrote it. When I read the first few pages, I thought it would be boring, but then it started to get really good. One of my favorite books, definitely should be made a movie, Lucy Liu would be perfect as Hatsumomo.

This book is a must read simply for the cultural education. It is most enlightening what the world of a geisha is all about. I did not like the ending at all. The story itself is OK but nothing spectacular. I saved a quote from this book that I loved: "Hope is like a hair ornament. Little girls wear too many, and old women look silly wearing even one."

Amazing that it was written by a man. The ending was a bit abrupt but otherwise excellent.

This was a fantastic book. It is one of those novels which takes you to another place. I had difficulty putting it down and was sad when I completed the book. I have recommended it to all of my friends and I recommend it to you.

You can learn a lot about Japanese culture. The geisha tradition is very interesting. The character brings you along a life filled with sorrow, misery and happiness.

I really liked this book. I found it tastefully done with a great sense of humor. I was a little disappointed when I read the last chapter and realized it was all fiction, especially with the introduction saying it was a biography. Oh well.

This novel by Arthur Golden fooled me at first. I thought it was an non fiction novel, only to discover when I finished it that it was fiction. Nevertheless, it was a fantastic story of how a disadvantaged Japanese girl grew up to become a very famous and prosperous Geisha. It gives wonderful insight on life in Japan during the pre WWII era.

Memoirs is one of my top 5 books I have ever read. My friend and I got so into this book. We would talk about it everday at work and we would get excited about reading more that night. It was strange how into I got. It took me a good 50 pages to get into it, but after that, I was hooked. It is also educational because you learn about a lot about Geisha's and the culture that surrounds them.

This was definetly my best read last year. I couldn't put it down.

This book was an interesting yarn-but so dull in the beginning-also the character os Hatsumomo is so unbelieveably nasty, it's over the top..

Good story, liked the historical perspective. Should make a gorgeous movie,

Great detail, very accurate (in my albeit limited experience), a good story, but in the end, I did not take away any great gift of insight.

Memoirs of a Geisha is not only rich in images but extremely enlightening about the life of a Geisha.
