I found these discounted for $40 for the pair. There was nothing to loose in buying them. I connected them to a passive subwoofer that has left and right speaker out channels to implement a crossover. These speakers are splendid for the mostly low volume listening we do in our sitting room while drinking wine or occasional martini. I have them on wedges on the hardwood floor on either side of a large plant so they face us directly while sitting. They are good at producing low or relatively high volume sound. The sound is relatively linear so the highs do not overwhelm the mids or vice-versa. You can hear most subtleties of any genera of music. Above all they are clear and never muddy in any range in which they produce sound. They are not at all tinny or boomy. They are even and clear. Their bass is lacking but not reprehensible. I would only use them with a subwoofer. You have to have a three-way speakers to produce solid bass without a subwoofer. I have Panasonic and Sony mini-systems without subwoofers but with three-way speakers and they both sound really good with really powerful bass.

I was looking for a set of cheap bookshelf speakers to attach to my computer and decided to focus on buying a nice amp and sound card while getting by with cheap speakers until later. These fit the bill nicely with good bass response and an attractive price. I paired them with a Dayton amp that sits on top of my desktop along with a nice ASUS Xonar D2 sound card. I highly recommend that setup as you will be treated to a much better listening experience then with dedicated computer speakers. When I have some more money to spend I plan on buying a $300 or so pair of speakers for the desktop while moving these to my living room where I'll use them as rear speakers. I'm not as concerned with expensive speakers in the living room entertainment center because I do my music listening in front of the computer while doing grad school work.

Great set of speakers for the price. They are built well and give off great sound.

Just purchased and set up a 5.1 living room theater / music system with these little speakers as the left & right front and L / R surrounds. For $50 per pair, they sound surprisingly good. I know good sound. I'm an experienced musician. I used to be an audio nut. Owned expensive speakers made by boutique small shops. My wife did not accept the idea that our new living room sound system was going to be populated with 4 PSB Stratus gold Towers, plus the Big PSB center channel speaker below the 47 inch LCD monitor, so I bought the Sony little speakers here, along with the CN 5000 center channel and the 12 inch Sony Subwoofer. I'm breaking them in right now with various rock and folk recordings. I can live with the sonics. The speakers are clear voiced, have no annoying dips or peaks in the audio spectrum. Again, these speakers are an amazing bargain for $50 per pair.
