A loudmouth with designs on elective office whose "bloody sock" was as carefully orchestrated as Paul Pierce's "injury" in the NBA Finals. But when you look at recent World Series winners, outstanding performances by Schilling link the Diamondbacks and the Red Sox, both unlikely champions. Though I doubt he'll ever do much again, he has earned his place in history.

Update: Wow...my original rating below was on my second day on Rateitall. I rated Schilling higher at that time, because he was coming off of two seasons in which he won 45 games and Arizona was in the playoffs. He was excellent in his first year in Boston, but his obnoxious personality that was present in Philadelphia returned even stronger with the Red Sox. Lately he has not been a reliable pitcher, which isn't unheard of for a 40 something.
12/9/2002 - Has emerged as a great pitcher late in his career. Being with the Diamondbacks really helped him put it all together.

Always has been.

the bloody sock performance was amazing. He's starting to get old though...don't think he'll be that good next year.

Great pitcher, risked his baseball career to win a world championship for Boston. He may have a big mouth but there's no doubt in my mind that he's a 5.

I wish I could rate him higher. Put down the crack pipes, negative people. This guy is one of the best pitchers to ever take the mound. He's a GIANT among men. Let's see....Phillies. They sucked and choked until Curt. Then, World Series. D'Backs? They blew until Curt. Then, World Series. Red Sox? Sucked, choked, gagged, cursed and generally screweed at every turn until Curt. Then, World Series. Anyone here not see the trend? He makes average teams CHAMPIONS. This guy is worth 10 times what the Sox are paying him. And my buddy met him and said he was a hell of a nice guy. And now he's paying out of pocket for a whole family to live in Boston from New Orleasns for the next year? Plus his ALS work? Please. We need more guys like Schilling in the world, let alone baseball. When he retires, let's elect him to something. End of story? Curt Schilling is a cut above. That bloody sock? Priceless. He's a first vote H.O.F. Thank you for ending the 86 year drought, Curt. You and big Papi are the best!

What do people see in him? He's had about two and a half good years in the league and everyone talks about him like he'll be in Cooperstown someday. I'm not impressed.

A below average pitcher who thinks he is now hot sh*t because he won a World Series. He suffers from the same inflated ego syndrome that afflicted all Red Sox players after mid-October, 2004. Shilling already had IES before this and the WS victory just OVERinflated his ego even more!

Schilling is the epitomy of a great stud pitcher. The best in the game today. He is missed by this Phillie fan. Could have been a Phiollie again but incompetent GM Ed Wade screwed it up!

I think he's gotten better with age and stil has Cy Young potential
James76255 04/05/2005
A work horse who cemented his place in baseball history in 2004. May not necessarily be remembered on the same level as Walter Johnson or Bob Gibson, but deserves every ounce of respect he gets from todays fans.

He's a true-warrior but I have nothing but envy on this guy. This sonofabitch took 2 championships away from my Yankees. Because of HIM! Damn him! If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't be in my current state of baseball misery. I wished he would've stayed in Philly.

Best pitcher in baseball

Nails, proven: The old man is still throwing gas. Curt has more than talent, he has a passion and he's about winning. PERIOD.
Beelzebub 01/13/2005
Amazing season. Hey, newsbabelover, how about that $1.98 arm holding up that World Series ring, you moron.
Newsbabelover 10/22/2004
A $1.98 arm, and a million dollar mouth. He's The Mouth That Roared. Even ex-teammate, Randy Johnson, despises him!
alpepper 10/20/2004
Mucho Cajones. His performance in Game 6 of the ALCS may have been one of the grittiest in the history of sports. This Hall-of-Fame caliber pitcher has a pedigree for this. He got the Phillies to the World series, won the World Series for the Diamonbacks, and maybe, just maybe, exorcized the curse. for the Red Sox.
OneHungryMonst er 08/23/2004
Amazing pitcher.
glowingmutan 08/18/2004
ho hum. the yankee invaders. any way he is awsome. plain adn simple
yisman 03/27/2004
Between good and great. Have to see how he bounces back off last season, and how he does in the AL?
Hardwire 07/17/2003
He won't go to the hall, he'll never win a Cy Young award as long as Randy Johnson is around, and at the rate Randy is going, he could pitch until he's 50.
Datmartin 06/21/2003
Curt Is A Great Pitcher And Guy.

I actually think more highly of Schilling than I do Johnson, but having them both on my team gives me the opportunity to not have to choose. And to Magellan, All I will say is, he came here and got his ring, something he couldn't do in Philadelphia.
magellan 08/03/2000
Now that he is out of Philly, I can let this punk have it. While he is clearly a talented, at times overpowering, pitcher - I have to say that he did nothing for the Philadelphia athletics. All he ever did was bitch, bitch, bitch - that he wants to play for a contender, that they should trade so and so, that they should not trade so and so... blah, blah, blah... and how about when he used to put a towel over his head when Mitch Williams was trying to close games? What a distraction this guy was... plus he always seemed to get hurt when the phils needed him most. Good riddance to this punk.
