A small, lovely campus with a library that extends several (like, seven) floors into the ground. (It’s really quiet down there, and you can get lots of high-powered studying done. You can also get murdered, but that’s beside the point.) I stayed at JHU for an academic summer camp eight years ago and loved almost everything about it. The dorms were new, well-lit, and relatively spacious. The dining hall was large and well-supplied, and the weather was perpetually warm. The professors were intelligent but could have been more student-friendly.

The best undergraduate creative writing program in the country, bar none. We have some of the most fantastic faculty and creative minds of our time. Forget pre-med and biomedical engineering, come here if you want to make it in the writing world.

One of the top 5 schools in the country; maybe the best, overall. Hopkins is extremely well funded, thanks to a galaxy of successful Alums, and has an all-star faculty who care about their students as well as their research. The campus is beautiful, and is near some of the best neighborhoods in Baltimore (some edgy neighborhoods to the south and east though). The students are friendly, motivated and extremely intelligent (with fewer preppy twits than in Georgetown, and more grown-up than some of the idiot savants you find in places like MIT and UC). Watch out for the feral squirrels, giant rats, and other Baltimore wildlife, and you'll do fine.

It's known for the med but has greats in other areas.

For medicine, 5 Stars; sure. But what about it's school of Ancient Literature, Dairy Science, Missiology, or.... You get the picture.

Perhaps the most presitigous institute for training world-class scientists, physicians, and scholars, Johns Hopkins is truly amazing. Research is undisputably the best, and few insitutions have as high quality academics.

Hopkins has a little bit of everything for everybody. The campus was pretty, and it's only getting better. Alumni giving sucks and that's why we rank lower than normal in rankings, not because of academics. I'm graduating in May, and respect I'll have in wearing a class ring that says hopkins will go a long way. But as an African American, I am very proud to say I graduated from here, but going to a campus where caucasians and asians ruled was not all that fun. Yet, admissions are doing more to reach blacks and other qualified minorities that overlook the option of my awesome soon-to-be alma mater!!!!

In terms of OVERALL academics, only Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and Stanford can beat it... with Cornell/Columbia coming close. Chicago lacks engineering, Berkeley lacks an undergraduate college as strong as their grad schools, and CalTech & MIT lack humanities. Johns Hopkins has it all. I highly recommend this school to anyone.

Johns Hopkins has one of the most beautiful urban campuses- the best Georgian architecture around. And the English Department is outstanding. My boss, Daniel Menaker, the new Editor-in-Chief at Random House has an English degree from Hopkins and he's a brilliant man- the top guy in publishing today.

The only thing that this school has is it's great research, especially in medicine. However, it's campus is one of the ugliest I've ever seen...very sterile.

I graduated from Johns Hopkins (B.A. English, '99) and am in my third year at Columbia Law School. The undergraduate research opportunities at Johns Hopkins are unparalleled and JHU's placement success rate into graduate schools is probably the best in the country. In 2001, 100% of Hopkins grads applying to law school were admitted to at least one of their choices. In 2001, 93% of JHU first time medical school applicants were admitted (and 89% of re-applicants were admitted). I don't know of any college with more impressive graduate school placement statistics. Johns Hopkins grads are highly represented in America's leading law firms, corporations, government offices and hospitals. Hopkins kicks ass!

A mediocre school for mediocre students.

I see no reason what so ever to disagree with anything Claude has said about this very highly regarded university. Personally I have not had the good fortune of attending or even visiting the campus. But, you don’t have to be a Johns Hopkins alumnus, professor, staff or student (or even have half a brain for that matter) to know this is a world-class university with a reputation that precedes itself. So, what's your big beef "Noriega"? You say you turned down Harvard to for Cornell with no regrets - yet you only seem capable of using some less than brilliant one liners to put down some other very excellent universities. That doesn’t seem to be saying much for Cornell. It might appear to some readers that you aren't getting much from your own college experience. Here’s a little tip – everything is NOT a sporting event. It’s okay to see the good in something other than your own school. Or maybe I misunderstood and you’re just angry that the janitorial pay is lower than average there?

Claude just wishes he got into an Ivy.

Johns Hopkins is truly a world-class university. 15% of the current freshman class is comprised of international students, and the percentage of foreign graduate students is even higher. Hopkins' schools in Italy, Germany, China, Singapore and the School for Advanced International Studies in DC, seem to foster its international reputation. Though Hopkins is a major research university with impressive resourses, its undergraduate population is fairly small (about 725 freshman enrolled in Arts & Sciences/280 in Engineering) which means students receive a lot of individual attention, especially in the humanities. JHU is unique in many ways. Hopkins is nationally ranked as one of the top 2 universities for creative writing (Writing Seminars department). Hopkins is tops in biomedical engineering and the School of Hygiene and Public Health is the best. Johns Hopkins is one of the leading universities for Genetics, 19th & 20th Century American Literature, Neuroscience, U.S. Colonial History, German & Romance Languages, Earth Science, European Art History, Near Eastern Studies and Political Theory. Hopkins students have the opportunity to study music (and receive credit) at JHU's prestigious Peabody Consevatory of Music, located in downtown Baltimore, a short shuttle ride from the university campus. Johns Hopkins students and faculty are extremely gifted and ambitious. 83% of JHU graduates receive an advanced degree within 10 years of graduation. This is the highest percentage in the nation. Famous Johns Hopkins alumni include former US President and Nobel Peace Prize winner Woodrow Wilson, former Secretary of State Madeline Albright and the self-made billionare, New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg.
