well I first had the study this book in 6th grade with a mediocre teacher. I thought it was vaguly intresting about how the community worked but thatas about it. But having studied it in 8th grade with a fantastic teacher, Whoa. WHo could expect so much from a small, paperback novel? The beauty of this book is the psychology, you have Jonas. Who goes through his 'Jonah and the Whale' trail. Growing up in a world where everything was laid out for him, no choices, no freedoms, but no hunger, or anger, or gried. To him it seems like a perfect world, but as Jonas learns about how the world used to be, before it went into 'Sameness' he is left with the choice of leaving the world in its own ignorence, or changing the lives of everybody. THe most direct theme I would say thats in this book is 'theres no happniess without pain'.

I loved this book. it was full of suspense and you had no clue of knowing what was coming next.

One of the best modern juvenile novels. I highly recommend it. It is futuristic fantasy, but it has a point to make, and a theme, and a plot. It makes you think yet entertains. What else can one ask of a book?

A pretty good book that shows us that living in a "perfect world" is in fact just as dangerous if not more dangerous than living in a world such as ours.

This was the first book I ever read more than twice. I simply adore it. It's a powerful book, and those who call it "boring" most likely don't quite grasp all the concepts within it. The ending in particular is a good one, leaving it up to the reader to interpret what exactly it means (me, I'm an optimist). Definitely a good read for those who can understand it, probably 12 and above.

The Giver is possibly one of the worst books i have ever been forced to read. It was not only corny but has all these people who love it. It can be interpreted in so many different ways. The giver himslef was an old pedophile who gives reality to a boy. In the end the kid rebels and dies. whats up with that?

It is a well-written story that really shows the problems as well as advantages of a utopia. Not as good as 1984 in depictions of supposed utopias, but a good read nonetheless.

Yea, this one got me thinking. I remember vividly the day I finished the story, pondering over and over what the ending meant. A smart idea that was carried out into an excellent and haunting book.

A very good but complex book. Lois Lowry has written a book that provokes you to think about the World and different things that we take for granted. This book is quite good, but at certain points it does get a bit dull.

This book is bizarre, but I give it a 4 rating because I imagine it helps young readers begin thinking about the meaning of life, the meaning of their own lives, how they fit into the world, and whether or not they agree with the way our society has chosen to organize things. It's like a Brave New World for children.

I found this to be a children's version of 1984. Very frightening.

Prompted me to think. Very intuitive book.
