So many twists and turns, I had to read this book twice to get the whole story. Brillant plot reverting to the awful 'Criminal Camp' innocent Stanley goes to from the sad story of western criminal Kissin' Kate Barlow, eventually the plots tie in together and Santey finds out what they are really doing at Camp Green Lake and ends the family bad luck curse.

This is one of my all-time favorite books. I've read it a million times, and I never got bored of it. The plot was good, and unpredictable.

What's wrong with this ratings list? Why is this book at #71 of 96, when it SHOULD be close to 60 places higher? I did not expect this from the author of the entertaining-but-silly Wayside School series, and I was astounded. The boys at Green Lake, despite being juvenile delinquents, are very easy to relate to. Sachar portrays them as human, and not as junior thug hoodlums, and that's a fairly unique perspective (not only in books, but in the rest of the world). An incredible read for elementary students, and I still pick it up to read it again on occasion.

I think this was the first in a string of really good books that seemed to get kids into reading again (along with "Harry Potter" but this and some other novel I've forgotten about came before that whole hype). "Holes" a quirky story, I found it entertaining.
