As a child I enjoyed reading all of the Laura Ingalls Wilder books. How lucky to get to read books written by a person who grew up in the Pioneer days. Not only did I love reading about Laura's life with her family in the 1870s{approx}and her encounters with Nellie Olsen. I found myself learning a bit about history. Laura books taught me about what life was like during that time period. Living in a log cabin, how poor they were. and just what pioneer life was like.

i read this book seven or eight times when i was young. i love the way life is described, how every detail is preserved. the way she writes is rich and satisfying. I love her entire series. I fell in love with the Ingalls family after i read this book and i would recommend it to any young girl, from the country or from the city. It teaches about family love and hard times, and how happiness is not based on wealth or possessions.

I always loved reading the Little House series as a child. I loved reading about how life was like during the 1800's. I never liked the TV series though. The book series is far superior, in my opinion.

Classic! If your only knowledge of the Ingalls is the TV show, pick up the books! They are so wonderful--a beautifully described picture of what life was like nearly 150 years ago. "Big Woods" is the most simplistic (my favourite is actually "Farmer Boy"), but it's a good introduction, and an easy book to read *to* your children. My mother still reads these books!

The whole series by Laura Ingalls Wilder is wonderful for young readers. I read them all as a girl, and still remember the stories. They help teach children about life in a different time, and are really engaging.

Wonderful stories that just transport you back to another time. These are for kids and adults.

You could nearly do reports on pioneer life using just this series as a basis.

This is the first of a series of Little House In the Big Woods set, and it basically is the almost true story of Laura Ingalls Wilder's family, narrated by herself. It provides a little historical knowledge of the time when families were migrating west. It has a more personal touch than school books by providing stories of daily life. While being informative, it is also pretty amusing in a simple way. The only problem I would have with it is the few, somewhat racist view of Native Americans.

My dad read aloud Little House in the Big Woods and several other Laura Ingalls Wilder books every night at bedtime when I was in early grade school, and the stories made a huge impression on me. I remember how fascinated I was to learn about daily life on the frontier, including how food was obtained and prepared, how the house was maintained, what school was like, what they wore, what they did for fun, etc. It was mind-expanding to see life through the eyes of someone living in a different time- I never got over how thrilled Laura and Mary were to receive an orange and a peppermint stick for Christmas one year, for example. Yet many of the problems Laura and Mary faced were similar to what modern kids deal with today, such as difficulties with peers and problems at school, making the stories more accessible. When I was older, my family took a trip to the Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum in Mansfield, Missouri, and we got to see many of the things mentioned in her books. The highlight was seeing Pa's fiddle, which had been a big part of the Ingalls' lives. I'm glad this bit of history is being preserved for future generations to enjoy.
