i remember reading some sort of abridged version of this when i was small. In university, i took a children's lit course and we studied this book. I didn't like it anymore. The way those children treat their neighbour,, not inviting him to eat with them or anything, that pissed me off and showed me that they didn't change all that much. The general story, however, is excellent, and i like the idea of how nature transforms people. maybe taking a critical approach to this novel took away from the charm of the story for me, i don't know. but anthropomorphic bluebirds just don't cut the mustard with me

I was so delighted with this book as a litle girl. I fell in love with the prose-like way Frances Hodgson Burnett told her sad, sweet story. The descriptions of both the characters and the landscapes are beautiful. This book could prove difficult for some young readers because the language is old-fashioned and a bit hierarchal. Definitely a classic.

The Secret Garden is the story of Mary Lennox who arrives in London to live with her uncle in Yorkshire. She's an incredibly spoilt, cynical little girl whose parents died of cholera in India. Her uncle is a hermit and doesn't bother with her too much so Mary is left to explore what the outside world has to offer. She befriends Dickon who is great with animals and at making things grow, together they explore a secret garden that hasn't been taken care of in years. Around that time Mary begins to wonder what's really going on in the old mansion, who's crying at night? I really enjoyed reading this book because it was so different from what I would usually read. The language was, at times, a bit difficult but it was entertaining nonetheless. It might not be the easiest book for children to understand but this is a book that everyone should read.

One of the most beautiful, lifelike and sad books ever. She really captures the essence of emotions and she describes the landscape so life like. When you read it it's almost as if you were there.

Wasn't that appealing to me. And I don't see how a kid could possibly like this book. The story isn't so bad. Not a page turner for me. I think, better for adults than children.

This book tells a simple, yet beautiful story which will always be a classic. Every kid I know who has read it started it reluctantly and ended up loving the book. It provides good morals for children. It has themes of perseverance, value of a good attitude and selflessness, and the value of friends. The only negative thing is the very blatantly racist references toward Indians. It should be remembered, though, that the author was a product of the time.

This classic tale is one that tells of a child's unusual adventures. It is set back in time and is well written. I have enjoyed reading this book many times, both alone and with my children. The Secret Garden is an important lesson for children to learn, that someone can have a great adventure in just living a grateful life.
